Another humidity issue, but I can't keep it DOWN!*condensation*
As the title says, yes, I have brought another thread into the world of humidity issues.
Last night after messing with her hat pad until the temps were for the most part appropriate(all of a sudden I'm having a bloody difficult time keeping the UTH temps right/heat getting through to the bin, ect,) temperatures, I also put in some eco earth again instead of paper towels because Kallista does prefer eco earth.(she hates paper towels it seems because she was always flipping out when I had on PT and then I put the eco earth back in and she went in her hide(haldf a kleenax box for now) and yeah.
So I assumed she was happy when I woke up. Upon further investigation. Condensation all over the sides of the tub. Well, for now there was nothing I could do about it since I had school. So once I got back, I soldered a bunch of holes into the top.
Still not much luck... still there's condensation, mainly on the warm side of the tub. She's in a 28qt.
I've been having trouble getting her to relax, and I have enough bloody holes in the tub, I might be better off soldering off a section and adding screen to it.
Honestly, I rather be dealing with it being not humid enough compared to too humid. At least with low humidity(though it's not good) you don't have to spend every minute hoping your snake doesn't get a URI.
So IDK what to do anymore.... I seem to be losing control of the near perfect husbandry I had since August. It's all falling apart now and I feel like a bad owner, though I'm doing all I can to keep her comfy and healthy.
-
Smaller water source or just less water????
-
Her water dish is already at less than half way full.... So she wouldn't be able to soak if I emptied it anymore... not that she needs to soak in this humidity...
-
Is her water dish close to the heating pad at all? If so, move it to the other end.
Dry out the eco earth and do not mist. Ie:Leaving it in the sun to dry.
Also, why not try coconut husk? Still holds humility well and it is also easy to clean.
-
Can you take a picture of your ventilation?
-
Does she soak? Atlas never did even when he had the whole dog bowl thing. Now he has just a little thing for drinking, and I stick him in the sink around shed time. Humidity is much more stable that way.
-
Sun doesn't exsist in Washington this time of year. :tears:
And I'll move her dish farther away(think it's in the middle....)
And I'll go get a pic.
It will look like a LOT of ventilation, but it's not doin much good....

You have a bearded dragon. You can use that heating lamp to dry out the eco earth. Just saying :]
-
I had some problems with condensation on the inside of tubs in my rack. It holds the moisture very well. I switched to water bowls that were taller but narrower, with less surface area. Worked like a charm--no more condensation and my snakes still shed well.

XD Why do I always forget I can use his heat lamp for stuff like that? I mena, I use it for rat heating, IDK why I never thought of using it to dry out eco earth...
Taller, narrower ones? *trying to picture, but brain ish fried*

Are you using Eco Earth bricks or bags? If its bricks wring as much moisture out as you can before adding it to your tubs. I have a high humidity issue with eco earth for the first day or two in my aquarium if I dont get the excess water out of the Stuff

Turn on a box fan or ceiling fan to move the air around. This will lower the humidity
-
PIcs of lid and one of the sides.
This side has the same number of holes(+/-) as the one parrallel to it and the other two short sides have 5 in each. (one in each corner and one in the middle)

I went to the local thrift store and picked up a bunch of bowls for around 50 to 75 cents each. I went for stuff that was heavy, around 3 inches deep, and no more than 4 inches in diameter. That minimizes the surface area of the water while giving the snake enough water for drinking. The smaller surface area slows evaporation and keeps the humidity down. This particular bowl needs topped off--I pulled it out of one of the tubs to show you what I'm using.

A small oscillating fan can also be used to increase ventillation. I use one in my snake room to ventilate my tubs. You just have to do a little experimenting with the placement and speed setting to find what works best. Also, if you have a ceiling fan in the room, they can also help with ventilation.

Unfortunately no ceiling fan. :( But I might have a small fan in my room, just gotta make sure I didn't' put it out of my room.... *not sure where it'd be IN my room*
But sounds like a fan should help a lot?
And luckily last time I checked there wasn't much condensation, but any amount is bad.
-
Hah, found it easily.
So I've got Kallista out right now around my neck and I've got my dragon's heat lamp low down on the tub(it's open) to help dry the eco earth and the small fan is blowing on it too, so hopefully that will help.
I'll leave it there for like an hour+ and see if that'll help.
I felt so bad for Kalli, because as soon as I opened the lid, she was OUT OF THERE.

Get a smaller bowl (not as wide) if you continue to have problems. BPs don't need to soak if the humidity is correct.
-
Don't forget that condensation is a product of humidity AND temps! If you room is cool you will get condensation until the room and tub have the same humidity. If my room hit 66-7º and the tubs are at 50-60% I have condensation. If the room temps lift some it goes away. Condensing water from air takes a cool to warm temps. Think about a glass in the freezer it goes in clear come out clear and frosts up in a warm room.

kitedemon - wow! i just got a science lesson! thx, lol.
i know heat + water = humidity
but thought
humidity + no escape = condensation...

I'm curious why the bedding isn't aspen?
I use the same tubs for my juveniles, with water bowls large enough for them to fit in comfortably. I get one-piece sheds and meals are never skipped. However, my snake room never drops below about 75•F. Maybe you should try the aspen.

Not necessarily but it can or not, it depends on conditions.
humidity + temperature difference = condensation
ventilation partially alters the temperature difference some but not completely and changes the humidity. It is easy to prove to yourself. Just take a bag that is clear out of the freezer and wait a few min and it will have some condensation on it how much depends on the amount of humidity in the kitchen. I have low humidity in my place about 38% today and I get some but lots.
100% humidity condenses on slight temp differences but at 10% it takes larger temps to start condensation. If everything is the same temp and moderate humidity there will be no condensation at all.

I hate using aspen with my BP because he passes so much liquid when he defecates. I'll get a TON of condensation and ammonia smell because the aspen doesn't absorb it and it sits underneath on the bottom of the tub. I of course try to be vigilant, but about once a month I switch to paper towels, which makes clean up MUCH easier and keeps me from missing things and getting unhealthy condensation/ammonia buildup.

You shouldn't be soaking a snake before a shed, and neither should the OP.
It removes oils from their body that help with the shedding process..
To the OP - I also will second the motion of getting a smaller water dish, and drying out that coco fiber will help a lot.
Like Kitedemon said ... room temps definitely affect things.
-
Not a fan of aspen or wood chip substrates myself. A little drier environment and a bit warmer room and it will go away.
I use coco earth type too and use some water to expand the compacted stuff but I mix loose with it. The loose is way more expensive but a huge bag is still only 15$ so...

Wow, so much to reply to. *.*
First thing I feel like I should clear up is- I don't soak Kallista. The closest I've ever been to soaking her was wiping her down with a wet paper towel because she was messy. XD
I just want her to have the option to if she wants to soak. But if the humidity's alright, and she doesn't have to, then I can decrease the size of the dish..
My room is about 69-73*F.
I don't use aspen for a couple reasons) 1, it's really rough, I dislike the feel and the smell of it, it's difficult to spot clean(my type that is) and it gave Kallista a weird smell too. O.o
And I just don't like it.
This morning there was not any condensation in the tub. Hopefully it helped by drying it out with my heat lamp and a fan for about two hours before I put her back. I kept the fan going and this morning, even though she dumped her water, there was nothing. :3
Hopefully I can keep things undercontrol.
Thanks for all the replies and help!
If there's anything I forgot to reply to, let me know.

I was hoping you didn't, but when people started talking about it I wanted to make sure they were in the know. :)
I agree on aspen....
Good to hear things are better :)

Yeah, I heard that soaking them, especially before a shed, can mess with the natural oils in their skin and cause them to have a bad shed
