    Herp Tracking Software reccomendations?
Im still in the preparation phase of my breeding plans. Just trying to get absolutely everything set up well in advance before I do any breeding whatsoever, and ive been trying to sift throught the internet and find a good herp tracking software.

I saw some youtube videos on Vyper RTS and was really interested, but I cant seem to find it anywhere but on youtube. Does it no longer exist?

I read a little bit about Degei, and honestly I didnt hear anything good.

All I found past those two was iHerp, which is fine I guess, but I was looking for something more centralized around tracking. Not so much an online
community, and I wanted to be able to save all my data on the computer itself.

Im considering just using excel spreadsheets, but that would be kind of a pain in the butt if you have a lot of snakes. Id prefer something easier to navigate. Any recommendations would be incredibly appreciated. = P

I use IHerp solely for tracking and it works great for me.....covers everything I can think of, and no need for any of that community stuff, I never use it.

Yes Vyper is still around. Hit up Justin at Jkobylka reptiles to find out where to get it.

I've been utilizing Degei Pro for several years now & absolutely love it. It's straightforward, easy to use and the support is top-notch. The barcode/scanner functions are very handy for efficiently keeping track of a larger collection.

    $.02 :)

If vyper RTS is still around im incredibly inclined to go that route. I love their cage cards, and I found some of the information used in degei not as relevant. I have done little exploring of iHerp other than entering my snakes nname XDD. Ill definitely hit up Kobylka, see if they cant pint me in the right direction. Thanks guys = P

We started using Degei a couple months ago and love it. We use the free version and wouldn't be without it. Really convenient and user friendly.

I was so excited when I saw this, that I decided to hit him up... Unfortunately, this was his reply (I did get Justin's permission before I posted this).

    Jason,

Unfortunately that is inaccurate. The developer of VYPER sold the software and the new owner has not yet made it available again. I was not privy to the details of the sale, so I don't know who purchased it or when it may be available again.

Sorry I could not help more.

    Hey Justin,

I saw on ball-pythons.net forum that Vyper was still around, and that you would know where to point me in the right direction on where to get it.

Any help you can provide would be great.

    Respectfully,

    Jason

I use Metzcal free reptile tracking software. It can be downloaded for free at their website. I always back up the data into a flash card. That way if the computer or the program becomes inoperable all you have to do is reload the program and add your data and all your info is there a very safe foolproof system. There are some features that I don't like for example you can not make the inner window bigger but overall is adequate.

Sorry guys for the bad info. I knew Justin knew the owner is the reason I sent you to him. Was not aware it was sold.

I'm necro-ing this because I'm frustrated; sorry guys :taz:

I really want to "go digital" with my records next year, because I'm sick of the 101 notebooks game. I had every intention of using Vyper -- I downloaded the free trial version, fiddled with it and really really liked it, but didn't buy it right then and there for some stupid reason.

Now Vyper has gone poof. I downloaded Degei and just plain don't like it. I might give it another shot again this evening, but I'm doing so begrudgingly.

I know Metzcal exists, but the download link doesn't work for me.

I still have the free trial of Vyper on my computer, and oddly enough, it still works, even though I downloaded it several months ago. This confuses me, since I thought it was only a 30 day trial. Can any computer savvy folks out there tell me if that means that I should expect it to go "poof" after 30 days of solid use, or is it going to magically going to keep working forever, for some unknown reason? I don't want to enter all my data and then have it shut off randomly one day.

I would be interested in this as well. I signed up on iHerp today and I like it. Just needs a data upload and download feature.

I use and love Degei. There IS a learning curve with it, but once you are used to it, it's a breeze to use, and it keeps great records. It makes recording clutches and setting up records for hatchlings a cinch, and you can print out feeding records for customers. I don't use some of the features it offers, but I probably will when I expand my collection. Degei seems overwhelming at first, but it's got great functionality once set up.

Another alternative is iHerp, which is entirely web-based. iHerp has a lineage database, which is what I use it for, and also allows for record keeping, breeding, etc. It's time consuming to enter your animals the first time, just as Degei is, but once they are in...if someone buys one, you can transfer the animal to them within iHerp, and they'll have the records, pics, etc.

I use a Mac and OSX so it looks like Degei is out. I think iHerp will work well for my small collection.
