Shame someone abandoned them but at least in that situation- you win! :P

Thats weird that someone would abandon those snakes, your pics are small and colorless but its pretty obvious they are all expensive snakes. If you have a collection of your own I would make sure and keep those snakes in completely separate room and have a strict QT period.

Where and how on earth did you find a group of snakes like that abandoned? I understand dogs get out when abandoned or you may see them in a house after everyone has left... where do you find out about a group of ball python morphs that has been abandoned?!

No one would abandon those snakes. They could be sold within 24hr way too easy.

    It's actually a true story.
I received a number from a client on Monday about a woman looking to adopt out over 40 ball pythons that were abandoned by the owner. I believe it was a situation where the owner had lost her house and didnt know what to do with these snakes...
I really did hit the jackpot...
The starred ones are staying to become a part of my collection and the others are going with my friend...
    I ended up bringing home
    *09 1.0 clown het albino
    *09 1.0 Genetic stripe
    09 1.0 mojave
    *09 0.1 Pastel
    *10 0.1 mojave
*10 0.1 Orange ghost het carmel
*10 0.1 Pastel yellowbelly het genetic stripe
*10 0.1 Pastel het genetic stripe
    10 0.2 Normals (one is granite-ish)
    10 1.0 Pastel het pied

There were also albinos and pieds and a lesser male but they found other homes...
They are currently being quarantined and under observation...many have symptoms of RI and will most likely be put on baytril after the vet examines them. The clown is the most underweight but with regular feeding and general care (that they didnt get), *fingers crossed* they will all be right as rain...

She gave expensive morphs up because she "lost her house"? You would think she would have at least sold them for rent...

I dont understand people...Im here in colorado and this is the third time I've heard of people abandoning animals since I've started working at my current job. I couldnt imagine giving up a whole collection..these snakes off the top of my head were worth $50, 000.

and this is from someone who presumably couldn't afford their house? obviously something is inaccurate or were missing a big detail somewhere...

it could be a number of things: maybe it was a messy breakup/divorce. maybe somebody went to jail....maybe they weren't hers to begin with and wants nothing to do with them after the move...either way, we aren't here to judge..congratulations and good luck on a fast recovery! Beautiful snakes!

This is just crazy! I work in animal control here in Minnesota and have only gotten two snakes in the last five years. One was crawling into a gas station. (still have her) the other was left in a trailer home. (normal male)

I don't disbelieve it. It amazes me what weird decisions people will make, but it doesn't surprise me at all that someone would choose to spend $50K on snakes when they can't make their house payments. Maybe the original owner thought she was gonna breed them and make her payments with their babies ...

To the OP, sounds like you're doing everything right (re: QT, vet checks) and will reap the rewards of someone else's mistake while doing a good deed for the animals! :gj:

You're very lucky to get those animals, I hope they thrive for you! I also can't help but feel sorry for their previous owner, I don't know anybody who would willingly abandon such animals.

    Wow absolutely amazing pick up!!!!!

The person that gave them away must have no clue they could have easily asked 10k for the collection to at least give them some funds to start their life over.

Goes to show you this hobby is very addicting and you don't want to spend your life savings or get in debt over purchasing snakes. I know I started with 2 a few years ago and the collection has steadily grown on a monthly basis. :)

I honestly don't doubt this at all like some people are. I'm surprised by how surprised some people are regarding other people's stupidity. I work in public safety so I guess I never underestimate the stupidity of some people lol

Anyways, congrats on the pickup, however, the people saying this is like a lottery? I disagree. Although she took these guys on for "free", they are not actually free. Because of the condition they are in, she mentioned RIs, she has to pay for vet bills for these guys, and is also taking on a huge commitment taking on sick snakes and with little known about their background. Although you see "morphs for free" it's really much more than that. I commend you for taking on this physical and financial responsibility to care for these snakes, morphs or not. Congrats. :gj:

They were free and sure she will be spending a nice chunk of change to get them back to health (assuming they all pull through). W.e the case is I'm sure her expenses won't be half of what they are worth.. Again congrats!

It's not just about money though that I was talking about, and I'm sure anyone who's had a snake with an RI before (nevermind multiple snakes with RIs) will understand. It's a huge physical and mental burden. I've never personally had any RIs (knock on wood) and hopefully I never do, but I am good friends with people who have, and I've seen it break them down mentally trying to make sure they pull through. I'd probably take in one morph for free that's sick, but multiple snakes is another story. I probably would have passed them up because of the commitment it takes.

Nothing is free in this world.
Free snakes = higher food and vet bill. Less space and more clean up.

    But congrats on the snakes!
Hope they all pull through well.

Caring for one abandon female with a RI was hard enough, I couldn't imagine doing it for 6 or 8!

And no I am not surprised someone gave them up like that. People do all kinds of weird things. It could be as simple as they thought they had enough time to get babies, or maybe even sell some of them, and then suddenly they were out of time.

Of course, there is even a tiny chance the person who left them the first time even stole them, and that is why they were left behind.

Regardless, I applaud the OP for their willingness to take on that many sick animals, expensive morphs or not.

I am a dog groomer. :D thank you for all the positive responses...ill be posting updates periodically to show their progression. The last couple days have been so stressful, but now they've settled in for the most part and yesterday had their first dose of baytril (they all have RI) so hopefully, they will all recover...I'm ready for the bumpy road ahead though...my heart goes out to these little guys its heartbreaking that they had to endure what they did before I took them in..:(

I hope they all pull through for you. My vet gives something different that is a little more aggressive with treating RIs than baytril. I'm at work so I don't have the name handy, but it might be something you want to consider. I used it when my enchi had a minor RI and it worked really well. I'll post the name when I get home.

It's Ceftazimine that my vet prescribes. It has worked pretty well for me.

Update: The vet told me if there is no improvement within a week she is going to try another antibiotic. The clown is by far the worst of all of them. He is being treated with. 3 CC of oral baytril daily but isn't improving yet, the outlook on him is pretty bleak...but I'm rooting for him.
The snakes were in sterilite containers marked with their morph. Expample: orangeghosthcarF'10

I'm sorry to hear how bad they are doing. You should suggest to your vet to take cultures to save some time and prescribe the appropriate antibiotic from there...you should also look into some diluted F-10 in a fogger, I've heard it really makes a difference if used with the proper antibiotic. I'm rooting for all of them! :tears:

Did your vet bother with a culture on the clown, or is she just going down the list of antibiotic options? Different meds treat for different bacteria (stating the obvious). During the week that you're waiting to see if Baytril works, you could already have the results back and know with certainty what to treat him with.

No she did not do cultures on any of them she just prescribed baytril 30mg orally and betidine *sp? For the bacterial infections caused by the decaying rat carcasses and for the mouthrot on the g stripe.
I also set up the f-10 fogger this morning. Their hotspots are sitting at 92-93 with an ambient in the high 70s. The vet also recommended trying to feed...I would think this would add to their stress so I'm gonna wait a few more days before attempting to offer rats.
I am also soaking 2x a day for about 10 min to help rehydrate them...
Am I missing anything, is there anything else I should be doing?
BTW: the woman texted me and asked of she could get the tubs back...lol
