Anyone else afraid of dropping their snake/lizard/etc because it bit you?

This is one of my biggest fears! So far I haven't done it, but I just about dropped one of the babies while I was moving it to a different tub. He probably bit me a good 20 times in the span of a month! I'm so paranoid about dropping the snakes I put foam flooring down in front of the baby rack. I just hope I have enough sense to always hold on to them.

oh man thats intense!
I guess out of reflex I probably would drop them but I havnt had it happen. Even with my bullsnake babies... they were all hiss and no bite. :P

I don't care about being bit but I've had a snake stike and fly out of my hand before. It was pretty funny. I think it was more shocked than I was. I laughed pretty hard. The room is carpeted so it pretty much dropped a couple of feet.

Lol, it's cement flooring so if they fell, I'm guessing they would die. I'm also worried that if one got out and fell on the floor that would be the end of that. So far I've been able to overcome my reflex to let go. It's not even like it hurts when a bp bites you, but it definitely startles you!

Oh my gosh I never thought of that! They definitely like to launch themselves when they are babies! Now I'm slightly more worried, lol. If my floors were carpet I would be a little more relaxed about it. I'm sure they are hardier than I'm giving them credit for, but I definitely think the foam flooring was a good choice. It's the big black interlocking foam pieces.

exactly, its the surprise that gets you. Its not really about the bite itself. A hatchling bite feels like toothpicks scraping your skin, it doesnt hurt at all. But yes I get what you mean.

Ouch.. Crikey! You go yourself a mean little one! Sorry. Lol.
But to b honest, out of the about the 30 or 40 times I've been bitten by countless different snakes, (even a 3 day old albino Burmese!) None hurt of really scare me. Now... I did get a scare last week, and it left a scar. Our 5-6 foot Burmese bit me and latched on wrapping my hand, that is the only time that I have ever been bitten that even scared me, and to be honest" I was more scared of hurting him then dropping him. :P Il

You could always buy a throw rug that takes up the majority of your snake room :)

i remember about 12 years ago i was just starting to collect snakes and i bought a pair of kenyan sand boas from the chicago reptile house. i never realized how fast they were when they were hunting. i moved my hand along the sand and one nailed me. startled me so bad i ripped my hand back and just happened to still have the kenyan attached to my finger which now went flying through the air landing safely on the couch.....lol

Iv always been terrified of being bit by anything, i always freak out. I remember my first snake which was a baby corn snake, i had her for 2 months and one day he decided to bite me, scared the crap outa me! After that happend i got rid of her and quit snakes.

But i missed snakes so much i decided to get back in the hobby and got a black king, iv learned to read her emotions and if shes pissed i leave her alone, but shes a sweetheart, if it wasnt for her i wouldnt have got back into snakes....but iv also come to the realisaition that im going to get bit again some day but i cant let that scare me again, snakes are my passion.

(P.S. I still dont mess with corns and havnt handled one since then lol)

thats good, imo, the best way is to always expect a bite no matter what, that way when it happens, you'll have already been ready

also, mine fell probably 5 1/2-6feet to the floor (carpeted) out of his tank when he escaped one night, he didnt get hurt at all though, but it was kinda funny, i was half asleep and i heard a big thump lol, i found him behind the dresser his tank was on

A little over a year ago, I had a baby Brazilian rainbow boa, and I was reaching in to grab her water bowl to fill it and she tagged me. Of course it didn't hurt, but my first reaction was to pull my hand back. Well, needless to say, she went flying over my shoulder. I felt SO freakin bad!!! I had never done anything like that before and at first I thought " Omg she's dead!" and I will be honest she did die about a week later :tears:. I'm not 100% sure if that was the cause or if it was because she was such a crappy eater, but I have learned my lesson to hold still. Or atleast try my damned hardest to!

Lol no doubt! He was a nasty thing for about three months. I gave him to someone as a pet and he's the nicest thing now, never once tried to bite them, lol.

Very true, I've gotten a little better after having a couple nasty babies this summer! I think they are hardier than I give them credit for. That's definitely a decent fall, I'm glad to hear they can survive a fall like that.

Oh my gosh that would suck. It could easily happen if your reaction is to pull back really fast. Hopefully I can always keep my wits about me!

I have with a juvi I got earlier this year. I was going to name him Triggers after a BP I lost last year that tried to get a piece of me every chance he got. He was fine outside of his bin but getting him out you were just about guaranteed 2 strikes from him. The new juvi was turning out to be the same way and they are the same het with similar color and markings so :rolleyes: go figure.

My nieces and nephews were over one weekend and wanted to see the new babies. I warned them before I took him out since they were holding the other ones,.. "this ones a look but don't touch unless you want to get bit" so I held him. He was some what calm didn't puff up and arch like he usually did but, I know better. It's not if he'll strike or bite,.. but when.

When I took him out he balled up and was cool for a bit. I turned my head to say something to somebody and as I looked back he struck out of the ball. Which is something I've never seen before and down he went. He plopped onto the carpet and I picked him.

We both learned something that day,... I don't take my eyes off of him even when he's in a ball and he doesn't strike as much as he use too. Only a couple of times in his bin but not at all when he's out.

Not so much with the snakes. I'm really good about their body language. I do work with a colony of tokay geckos and the babies and parents are feisty. I had a baby last year latch on to my finger and I jerked back and it went flying. They are all incredibly resilient though. I don't think that even If you dropped one on the cement floor it would get hurt. Don't try it but I'm just saying I've had accidents at my house and they always turn out ok.

I've had baby corns get away from me a time or two. Anyone who has had a baby corn knows how fast they can be. The floor to our snake room is carpeted (nice thick, fluffy carpet) and none have been injured. I don't know if baby corns have enough mass to to hurt themselves from a 4 foot fall. My bipolar IJ carpet flipped out once taking her out of her tub and dropped from about 4 foot. Made a nice thud when she landed, but it didn't even phase her.

My girls don't need my help to fall, every time I turn my back on them I hear a "THUMP" and have to go rescue them from the floor and make sure they're okay. :rolleyes: My boa likes to think she can reach the end of my bed from my computer chair, and it usually ends with her taking a dive.

They've never fallen more than 3 feet, and always onto carpet. The bigger they are the worse it sounds though.
