Problems w/mom - joining marines read- need help!
My mom won't let me get any more snakes until I tell her what I'm going to do with all my snakes once I join the marines. I'll be in boot camp and I won't be able to feed my snakes and stuff like that and I'll be living in the barracks unless i get married at 18 i can get my own house but thats not going to happen, and I dont think you can keep pets in the barracks. You can get kicked out for even bringing a girl there. Any resolutions?
I have:
2011 650g 1.0 pinstripe ball
2011 400g 0.1 normal ball
2010 1375g 0.1 normal ball
2010 1485g 0.1 normal ball
2011 750g 1.0 albino retic
2011 500g 1.0 Colombian red tail boa
Lookin to get alot more.

why would you want more snakes if your joining the Marines? your most likely going to have to get rid of the ones you have anyway, so why look at getting more?

As a Retired Marine let me tell you this. You won't be able to care for snakes properly while in the service. I tired it was a miserable failure I lost one due to a rapid deployment within 24hrs I was packed and gone 7 months. I had a friend who was able to care for them but he didnt do the best job and it was my fault for trying. I rehomed me others and now that I am retired I am starting my collection again. So as Spooky said time to man up Be a Marine best thing that happened to me as a person for growth as a man and I do not regret the man the Marines helped me become. So time to sell your collection and join up

Re: Problems w/mom - joining marines read- need help!
I'm a sophomore in highschool, so I have a couple years still. I take care of my reptiles and maintain about 150+ rat collection to feed them in my basement. Very knowledgable about it and I know I have to get rid of them once I join the corps, but i didn't know if i could maybe rent a little space out and pay a couple expirenced people to care for them. Any other thoughts?
Thanks

You're best bet in my opionion is to give them or sell them to a friend. I'd be really hard to expect someone to take care of them for that long, just to hand them back over. You can try to write out a contract with a friend if you plan on getting them back, whenever that may be. All my friends that have joined the service have stayed in for longer then 4 years, so it may be hard to keep them getting sent different places all the time.

Pay rent on a place, pay the people to care for them... how much do the Marines pay new recruits?
Your mom is justly worried because she doesn't want to be saddled with your pets. Since you live in her house, it's her rules. I wouldn't add any more animals and would begin either farming the best of the best out on long term breeding loans and sell the rest.
If you do long term breeding loans, make certain it's in writing and for enough time. You might want to put in a clause for a sale if you stay with the Marines.
A 'couple years' is not a lot of time to get a bunch of live animals all situated. My personal advice would be go ahead and sell them off and concentrate on the Marines.
-
If you decide to join you should sell them. Keep the money for another time with more stability in your life. I joined the Air Force and had to sell my collection. You are not able to keep animals in the barracks, for good reason too. When I arrived at a stable point in my life I was once again able to start up my collection. Your Mom is a wise lady to have you start planning this early.
You can't have your snakes and eat them too...wait, that's not how that saying goes.
-
When I went in I had to sell off my entire collection of everything. I tried to set it up for someone to house them and can maintain breeding plans but keep 80% profit made from clutches...but I decided that it is honestly best to sell them all and start over once your out. I am glad I made that decision, although it sucks really bad starting from scratch again. I was only in 4 years but managed to do 3 deployments and most my time back was spent in sniper school or other training available. Just sell them off, unless you have 100% trust in a friend or someone to keep and maintain your collection for you.
What MOS are you looking to get?...if you know yet.
-
Well as someone who just re-uped. You will have to sell your collection. I'm 21 married and pay rent have a.small mouse colony. Some BP. Its hard mainly cuz work ain't a 8-5 job. I go to work at 6 get out at 7/8(6am and 7/8pm) then deployments.. it's not easy so trust me... sell them. I can't start a full blown collection only 2 or 3 Max and pushing it.
Not to mention ur mos plays a huge role.

Things happen and people change their minds all the time. If you're for sure joining the military then sell them. The less you have to worry about during Basic and AIT the better. Not to mention how fast everything can and will change as you adjust to a military lifestyle after AIT.
-
where do you live?
i'd look for a friend you trust to watch over them. i think it would be pretty hard just to let them go. if there is anything to i can do to help feel free to PM me. i'd look after them for you if you wanted to cover the cost of feeding them. but i know i'd be sketchy with a stranger watching over mine.
good luck!

It sounds like you've already signed for delayed entry, if that's the case you may as well accept the fact that you aren't going to be keeping snakes for at least the 4 years after you ship. A single PFC straight out of boot camp is flat out not going to be living out in town, and unless you're wing and your squadron CO never does his own field day inspections you really don't have a hope of keeping them in the barracks.
If i were in the same situation I'd sell the collection and bank the money to reinvest in a new one once I was able to again.
-
As former military, I agree with the suggestion to sell the snakes and put the money in a bank to collect interest. If you can find a high interest savings program, you can put the money in, and in 6 years or more (whenever you get out) you'll have a sizable chunk of change to start a whole new collection.

Re: Problems w/mom - joining marines read- need help!
I am also a retired Marine, and I spent probably 65% or better of my career either stationed overseas or deployed to combat zones. And even when I was stationed with a non-deploying squadron, our average day was 10-11 hours long. I also had to rehome my first collection due to an unexpected deployment.
Something else to consider is, by the time you finish high school and do a tour in the Corps, two of your smallest snakes are going to be your two biggest snakes. You mom may not like the thought of having to care for, and handle, a RTB and Retic. So, I agree with everyone else, sell the snakes and go earn the title...:salute:

As a person currently serving I can tell you the best thing would be to sell and hold on to the money for the future or find someone who you trust to watch them and make sure you pay for the care they provide. It sounds hard but you are looking at 2-3 years before you get your own place, unless you get married.
Even if you get married you have to make sure you had a wife willing to take care of snakes lol. I had to wait three years in to finally get settled to the military life and being married. I started my collection slowly trying to figure out what number was pushing it.
I'm currently deployed right now and it is very hard for my wife to watch over my collection, after dealing with our 3 girls lol. She will need a much needed break when I get back but I will say I did have to let go of a few odds and ends to make it easier on her.
Good luck on what you choose but just remember if you do ask someone to watch over them for you, you will be putting a strain on the relationship between both of you so make sure it's a good one to start with and if they aren't family I would suggest getting stuff in writing.

Re: Problems w/mom - joining marines read- need help!
I would suggest not joining the Marines.
:salute:

a lot of my fraternity brothers were in the reserves. when they had drill i would watch their pets. i'd sometimes have 30+ reptiles, mostly snakes. when they came back they picked up thier "kids" and when they had to go again i was there to foster for them.
selling them is the easy option. probably the most practical. if that is not an option you want to consider till its the absolute last option then you gotta find a foster care taker. look for that marine who went through the same thing. if they are in a position to help you im sure they will.

2 years is not that long to go but stick to your plans, you wont regret it. You are young, sell the snakes and follow your plans. When you are done with your service and your life settles down then you can get back into what you love doing. Atleast at your age you have some sense of the direction you want to go and that's a very good thing. Don't waste time procratinating in your life because time will fly by and the next thing you know it's gone...

Don't join the Marines. Keep the snakes...and the girls.
You're 18, don't waste your life. There ARE other options.
-
dont get merried just to be able to keep snakes a lot of young marines make the mistake getting merried to young and it doesnt work out. and depending on your unit you might deploy a lot too.my end of service is in a year and im starting my collection now slowly i have one ball python and am gonna get one more snake before i get out. wont be getting more until i do get out. just a heads up the marine life is not really flexible at all for your lifestyle its actually the complete opposite. you could be stationed at one base and you could get sent somewhere else a year into your enlistment.
