Hides

ok so im replacing my half log hides with bowls with holes cut in them, but i just thought, what is he gonna have to rub against for shedding other than aspen, waterbowl, and vine.

just curious.. whats your reason for switching hides?

to this. and my reasoning is just because i heard that its better to have a circular hide then a half log,

They need nothing to use to shed, I use tubs with a water bowl and paper towels, no hides at all, and my snakes shed in perfect one piece sheds almost every time.

Because half log hides are a sham, they don't do what they are intended to do which is hide the snake.
A good hide will have only one entrance for the snake to have to guard.

"circular" hides provide all around cover which helps the snake feel more secure which leads to less stress which is why they are > half logs

BPs prefer the smallest possible hide they can squeeze into assuming it provides all around cover

Yes you did! You have provided your snake with the appropriate hides that it needs to feel more secure.

ok i quoted because i knew who to direct it to, what about shedding, can he press against then it come off or start it, or what because its a smooth surface.

My snakes typical shed inside there hides and rub against themselves so I would not worry, if you husbandry is good they wont have a problrem

If you keep your humidity high enough when the snake is in shed it should not have any problems getting the shed off.

:) Kudos for doing the research, it takes all of us some time to learn the basics, asking questions is how we all learn the specifics.

The key as is having high enough humidity for the snake to shed without the use of anything but the floor or sidewall of the tub.

There is nothing wrong with throwing the half log hide in during the shed period for the snake to rub on, and then pull it from the tub after they shed, it's really the only thing those half logs are good for :)

well as you see in the second picture i posted earlier, i dont have a tub, i have a 20 gal. long, and i know it makes no difference tub or tank, but, im getting a snow corn snake, anyone know anything about that? i know its the wrong category, but its gotten this far!

I bought a bunch of black buckets from the dollar store and cut them to fit my adult rack tubs. I use aspen bedding and of the 30 snakes in that rack, 2 or 3 have a little residual skin left. Nothing a simple soak won't fix. All the others do great shedding without any problems. I'll also mist the inside of the hides on those with imperfect sheds and that has worked well also. As a side note, the couple of slower feeders I have turned on the next feeding and are now eating consistently.
