New project. Not sure which way I want to go....
I want to get into some cloubrids will I can't keep BPs. I have narrowed it down to a few different species and need some help deciding what would be best for me. I like them all the same, so please no 'It's really up to your preference' posts, as I don't have a preferance on any, as I said I like them all. I want to start with a pair, or more depending on how leanient my mother is going to be about the whole idea. It's only for another year and a half so it's not like it's forever and they won't be breeding till after that anyways. So if you could vote on which would rather work with and why that would be geat.

I am mainy curious to know first hand accounts on temperment, level of difficulty to breed, and some basic care. I haven't full researched any the ones in the poll, I am trying to narrow it down so I don't have to do a crap ton of research on a bunch of different snakes.

    Thanks for reading/responding.

    Kevin.

It's a hard choice. I like them all, too. I haven't personally kept any of these species, so my opinions are based solely on sporadic interactions with the animals at shows, or in friends' collections, or through anecdotal stories.

Corns are just great all around snakes. So many different morphs, and not too expensive to get into, relative to many of the other species morphs.

Judging only on stories I've read, Texas rat snakes are probably the most difficult of those species, as far as personalities go. They tend to be very flighty and nippy. But some people prefer that in their snakes, too...keeps 'em interesting. LOL

Hog noses are just the cutest little boogers in the snake world.

Sand boas are also cute and very cool little snakes. I've seen some pretty neat morphs for these guys, too.

I put my vote in Cali Kingsnakes. If I could choose to keep only one species off that particular list, that's probably what I'd end up going with. I love their adult size...I love their general overall temperament...and I love all the really cool pattern work you can do with them through selective breeding. You've got white and black, yellow and chocolate, plus the albinos. You've got banded or striped. Solid stripes or broken stripes. Spots, even. I never get tired of poking through every deli cup at a show that has a cali king in it. :D

I like the banana cal kings too, but I voted KSB because I'm really liking them lately. Plus, did you see the thread on the babies? So cute. And they don't get too big.

Just curious, I'm sure I missed it in one of your other posts, but why can you keep colubrids and not balls?

Well worse comes to worse I may get a pair of ksb and cali kings. I appreciate the responces. :)

I read the article on ksb in this months reptiles magazine to get an idea on husbandry. For amyone who knows, you dont need hides? Just some deep aspen?

My mom made me get rid of the two I had because they were to girthy. She doesn't like fat snakes. Even as babies balls have some heftiness to them, which is why I'm changing direction to colubrids/ksb for now.....babies are not as "fat" as balls when smaller. Plus as they grow she can adjust to their size.

I'd go with either the corns or the Cal Kings, both are easy to work with, and breeding isn't difficult either.

If You care about colors mutation and easy care corns are way to go...

I voted corns only because they are small, cheap and have a butt load of morphs :D

I voted corns, though it was a tie between them and kings.

I have two corns (one I just picked up, the other I've had for 9 months) and they are fabulous eaters. My older corn has literally skipped a feeding one time, and that's when he was in shed. I love all the morphs available too. Plus, I don't have a preference for them in terms of keeping them: they do great in both a tank and a tub.

Kings: I have a Cali right now, and he has been a great feeder for me too up until about a month and a half ago when he went off feed for the season. But they are still usually great feeders and do well in both a tank or a tub. The musking isn't even that bad either, plus I love king's little "mad" faces, they always look grumpy. :P

For both though: I hope your mom doesn't mind FAST snakes over the beefy "lazy" ones because whew, corns and kings can fly when they want and sometimes their speed can be a little intimidating for those who are a little hesitant around snakes (which I'm only ASSuming your mom is if she didn't like the balls because of their girth).

i said texas rats. they get a good size, and are really active so they make great display animals. they do have a bit of attitude to them so you need tobe prepred for that.

So it looks like an almost three way tie between KSB, Corns, and Hogs which havent even been talked about yet. Lol. I'll let the poll go till Turkey day then I will see where we are at and make my decision then. Until then keep the votes coming. :)

So after looking around on fauna and other sites I have it narrowed down to three species.

    #1) Western Hogs
#2) Cali Kings or any kings
    #3) Kenyan Sand Boas

Not on your list, but look into Black Milksnakes if you haven't already... the perfect colubrid IMHO.

I vote hognose. If your mom doesn't want you having large snakes, they are a great choice. Here is my anery male.

I voted for hogs, but corns would be a good choice too. Everyone I know who has bred corns says it's pretty lucrative.

    Hoggies.

I've kept colubrids, and they're the only one now that I'm in any way interested in. I love my normal big girl, would love to have a morph her size.

I voted corn for their personality. They're super laid back snakes and while there are lots of morphs I've yet to see one that strikes my fancy as much as a nice normal. Kings are fun snakes but generally take a bit more work to calm down. Garter snakes are fun mainly because of their diet and feeding options. Hognoses are probably the cutest snakes in the world but can be feisty little suckers at times. Texas rats can be hell on wheels or calm as kittens - varies greatly from snake to snake. I haven't worked with kenyans but they seem like neat snakes. Seeking your mom's stamp of approval I'd probably go with corn(placidity) or hognose(cuteness). Either snake is pretty good at winning people over. A tough decision to make, I hope you're happy with whatever new species you decide to work with.

You should get something farther outside the norm (if you have colubrid experience already) like african house snakes, or red-tailed green rat snakes.
