♥ Baytril Dosage??? Really???♥
OK-
So 3 of my snakes are exhibiting some RI symptoms.
1.) She has a little mucous in her mouth around the jaw line. NO BUBBLES or anything like that.
2.)Wheeze and pop 2 times yesterday while at the vet. NO MUCOUS.
3.)Wheezing/mucous in mouth and around jaw line.
Vet Visit: Ok, took all 3 snakes to the vet yesterday. She said that #1 and #3 seem to have a slight case of RI and that I should give them ORAL suspension of Baytril daily for 2-3 weeks. Then, #2 apparently does not show a sign of RI but to give him some too just to 'keep it away'.
PROBLEM: She said that EACH snake takes the SAME amount which is 2.0mL??? This does NOT seem right as each snake weights a different weight.
#1-897gr
#2-845gr
#3-1027gr
I thought that the dosage was based on grams/lb of the snake??? This seems like too much! I don't want to OD them which I have heard is very possible to do with Baytril. I'm scared to give them the medicine. I tried calling the Vet back this morning (Saturday morning clinic) but she was not available and apparently since she is the only Reptile vet there she only comes in every other Friday. I asked the lady to 'page' her but she said that they do NOT do that. If the Vet calls in that they would give her a message. So, that means I won't be able to speak to her until December 2nd. I can't wait that long to treat them.
I called other vets in town which no one saw Reptiles except for the clinic 1 1/2hr away. I asked them if they could tell me the right amount to give my babies of the Baytril and that my vet was unavailable until the 2nd. EACH vet office told me the same thing, "You will have to make an appointment..bla bla bla" I ALREADY spent $175 for all of them to be seen plus the $53 for the medicine. I can not afford another appointment at a whole new office for all 3 of them just so I can get told the correct dosage for my babies.
Can anyone help me? Please???? :please:

They really aren't that far apart in weight, and its probably something like 1 ml/500g (dont know exact dose recommendation, just a guess off of what you were told) or something so, for example, I don't know why you would do 2.1 for one and 2.3 for another when that is kind of hard to measure. Remember, this is the safe level for dose, not the toxic level. So they will be fine.

She's a reptile vet, trust her judgement. She knows what she's doing.

The Baytril that is prescribed is 2.27% and last time I saw her she prescribed the same Baytril for my big girl that is 1027 grams. and She was only getting 0.1ML. So, thats why I think something isn't right here.....

I don't know..give smaller doses if that makes you feel better :)
Better to do that then spend more money at another vet or not treat them.

Re: ♥ Baytril Dosage??? Really???♥
You're in the dame boat we are in.. my fiancée and I have a super pastel who's sick and fighting a R.I. and has been for two months. Vet these days are absolutely outrageous... and it's BS. I have not years of one vet actually faring for a snake, to make it worse our vet refuses to see our Burmese Because he's "large and dangerous" but shell see green iguanas.... :/ I'm not a vet, and I can't tell you exactly what to do, your best bet is to just do What they say, or slightly reduce the dosage.. but someone else who has more experience will help you more then I can. My main point was to tell you, you're not alone in this.. just be happy the vets are even willing to take you, I tried asking a Herpetoligst (s.p. error) about it and he said "go see a vet, and Because you saw a vet I can't give you Even a but of advice, they would take my license for practicing without one" it's b.s.... and to make it worse our vet almost killed our snake.. another story. Sorry I sorta ranted, more or less wanted to just tell you, you're not alone and try to give you a bit advice, but I lack that. :( good luck with your babies battles!

Hmmm, well to compare: my 2000 gram girl is getting 1.0 mL/cc each day via injections for her mild RI. :confuzd:

Well, my Vet actually AGREED to see my SPIDER BALL because I had to explain to her that it is the SAME as a Ball Python just different genetics. The office kept telling me, "Mam' mam'...we don't see Spiders!!"
I know that Baytril can kill a snake if over dosed...not to mention dehydrating, and basically if I give them too much it could kill them, if I give them too little it make take a longer time to get them better in which case what if im 'wasting' the medicine and then while they are only getting a 'small' dose the bacteria (RI) could start fighting off the 'little' medicine and then all that vet cost and medicine cost won't help...
Then...I'll have to take them back to the vet. Isn't there an online Baytril dosage chart for snakes? I saw one for dogs and cats...but can't find a thing on snakes. =( This would be helpful for a lot of people I would think.

Yeah, see something is not making sense....the vet said 2.0mL for each one daily. If a 2000 gr snake is taking 1.0Ml then 2.0Ml will most likey kill a 897 gram ball python....
:tears:
-
In that case, I would question the dose. I'm sure they will get about the same per snake, but you didn't mention that the amount was higher than normal. I'd call another vet in another town and ask their opinion.

I don't think you'll kill anybody, but if you're worried go with your gut and lower the dosage (I would speak first with your vet though before changing dosage levels).
And worst case scenario: bite it money wise and take them all to another vet. If you think that something isn't right with your current vet I say go to someone who you're more comfortable with.

Found this quote on another forum to compare to
Quote:
i use oral baytril 2.5%
0.2ml per kg of body wieght is a weak dose
0.4ml per kilo of body wieght is the strongest dose
in the 2.5% strength theres 25mg of baytril in every 1ml of the solution
the weakest dose is adminestered daily

Tried that, that was actually the 1st thing I did...First thing they said was:
"Are you a patient of ours."
my response was, "No" (if I say yes they will try to pull the chart)
Then they say, "Well, im sorry but we can't tell you anything unless you make an appointment so we can see what is really going on."
I already know what is going on, $175 told me that with the other vet. Just need to know the right dosage. =(
Which no one will help me at the vets offices unless I make another appointment which is pointless. I have the medicine just afraid to give it to them. :tears::tears:
-
Here you go
http://www.leaplizard.com/articles/dosage.html
Maybe she said .2 or mistyped it.
EDIT: dunno if that helps or not actually.
-
Oral vs injectable isn't comparing the same thing though. If you're doing 2cc oral that doesn't seem too bad to me. If you were trying to inject 2cc's into a 800g snake though then I'd be concerned.

I know what you mean, I feel like the 300 I spent on our vet bills has been wasted Because it hasn't done anything, and the same thing happened when my fiancée said "pastel" ball pythong the receptionist said "what is a pastel?" And to make it worse there are multiple receptionist that can answer and they NEVER take down a thing. I wish there were dosages online, and I agree we should be able to buy them, but they're "dangerous" I could rant forever on about this, but the topic at hand is getting your snake better.. dare I say it, follow the vets advice, there a lot better then ours is. (Visit #4 Tuesday...) but, if you notice ANY of the snakes getting worse get ahold of that vet and ring them! Good luck! I hope yours is Better then ours!

Most vet manuals I've seen suggest using 10mg/kg every other day
Baytril 2.27% solution contains 22.7 mg of enrofloxacin per mL (or cc).
So 10mg per kg / 22.7 mg per mL = .44 mL of Baytril 2.27% solution per 1000g of snake
Consult a vet first but that should be a typical dose.
This is the strong dose. So the light dose daily would be .22, or .2 as your vet probably meant to prescribe. Sounds like its a case of typo to me.

I would def. do that if I had the money. I was working full time (im a mechanic) and my husband was working full time (construction) and my 5yr old has Autism. Well, last year December my hot pink 2 door eclipse was parked on the emergency lane at 1:30am with a flat tire and hazards on. This was off of I-35. Anyway, a 18 wheeler slammed into the back of my car going 85mph. Apparently didn't see my lights. My 5yr old had to have his skull reconstructed which they did a really good job. I had 4 broken neck bones, 4 spinal fractures, and 3 spinal bursts. I have 2 bars that run along my spine with 10 screws and a bracket. THANK GOD I am walking! My husband had to have a full knee replacement in September. He is still in physical therapy.
We live off disability and it ain't much. So, right now I can't afford to take them anywhere else. Spent everything I had to take them yesterday. I don't get paid until the 1st and then I might as well wait until the 2nd to speak to the vet that I took them to yesterday.
I just wanted to start them on it now since it is RI it is best to start them ASAP. Just that I am being a concerned owner and NOT wanting them to overdose which IS EASY to do with a ball.
So, that is pretty much where I am at.

Yeah, I don't remember much, but I remember that they told my family I would be paralyzed and probably never be able to move my neck or walk or anything.
I'm walking, driving, and doing all that. Problems I have are stiffness every morning, getting comfortable to sleep, bending, laying on a flat surface (there goes mechanics, I built that car myself BTW. Did all the engine work and outside work).
I have been off and on pain meds since the accident BUT now that it's gotten colder I am fully back on. I hate it because I can't function during the day since im so tired...
Oh well, what ya gonna do. :confuzd:

The dosage is dead on.
My vet if i need anything i just call up and i get the Rx. Dosages re given and ill write them down.
The way to figure out dosages is this.
Snakes weight in LBS x .45= weight in KG then Divide by4 and you get your dosate in CC.
so your one snake of 845g ill use as an example.
845 in lbs is 1.86lbs
1.86lbs x .45=.837kg divided by 4 = .209cc. Which is transferred to 2ML per dosage

WOW, that is def. what I was looking for. Thanks. Didn't seem right but I guess it is right. Is there a reason that my 2093 gram female only was taking 1.0ml? Doing that math that doesn't come out right....then again my math sucks. lol

Each vet will do their own dosaging, but the math i laid out is the general dosage for most Antibiotics for snakes.
the larger female should be taking dosages in the 3-5ml. 1 ML is 1 CC. Reason most vets prescribe daily 1ml dosages as thats a full syringe and easier than having multiple. 1ML is fine even for the big girls when given daily

Wow, your knowledge would actually help a lot of people. So, I must ask...do you know anything about F10 and 'fogging'?? I heard that it works great for RI, not only for cleaning/disinfecting.
You should do a sticky, I think it would really help a lot of people. :gj:

Yep, and F10 should not be used for Fogging for Ris at all. Wont help clear anything but subside the RI enough to get proper treatment.
All F10 is doing is killing the bacteria and allowing the snake to breath better similar to that of Vicks vapor rub on your chest.
Just use it as a cleaner but not a medical treatment..
And I not going to make a post about dosages as too much can fall back on me for giving out information that someone could mis read and kill their snake. I wont be held liable for any of that so what i posted above is simple and not detailed..
-
Do you by chance have a picture of the Syringe to show the numbers and dosage in the pack.
the one example i did of .209 isnt converted to 2ml just .2cc is .2ml.. Im wondering if you read wrong as 2ml is alot of baytril for one snake to get daily.

Yes, I understand and I understand that you are NOT a vet and in NO way giving me medical treatment or telling me how to treat my snake. Just one experienced herp. explaining things to a novice.

Last time I used Baytril, it was on an animal I took back from a customer on a right of first refusal. It came into QT with an advanced RI. The vet put it on Baytril while we were waiting for the culture results.
The dosage was 10mg/kg. Using that dosage your snakes should have been prescribed:
For the 897 gram snake: 0.4 ml
For the 845 gram snake: 0.4 ml
For the 1027 gram snake: 0.45 ml
RIs that culture sensitive to Bayril are often dosed at 5 mg/kg. I'm ASSuming that your vet did not do a culture and went with the lowest dose. That's something else I'd query him/her about.
Anyway, at that lower rate, your dosages would be 0.2 ml, 0.2 ml and 0.22 ml (0.2 ml).
Call them out on the typo. You paid good money to get accurate information and guidance. It's pathetic that a bunch of people with no veterinary degree were able to give you more accurate info.

Ah ok...I got you. .209cc is .2ml so then .109cc would be .1Ml. Right? Asked about the F10 since I heard BHB uses it for all their snakes for fogging/RI.
Also, here is the picture of the syringe NO numbers on it. The Baytril is 2.27% and a 20ML bottle.

Thanks.

I used to help at BHB and used the F10 there and it dont help at all for RIs.
And if that syringe has any baytril in it then thats .2ml not 2ml which is spot on for right dosage. As that syringe FULL is 1ML and you will see why i said 2ML is A LOT

I have to fill it up manually daily. They aren't pre-filled. I see. Well, that is awesome that your worked for BHB. I heard they are great guys but never bought from them. Awesome. Thank you so much. You have totally answered all my questions. Do you have facebook by chance?

Thank you so much. I didn't know what to do. I didn't want to take a chance of OD'ing them as it is easy ive read. TG I didn't go with what the vet said they would be ODed for sure!
Thanks so much. I see your name a lot on the forum. I love the profile picture! You are a very very smart man. I enjoy reading your posts. You are a combination of sarcasim/in your face kind of man. I LOVE IT.

Re: ♥ Baytril Dosage??? Really???♥
I recieved sick snakes from somebody at one time. The dosage I gave them was .1 ML per 500g of animal. I also did oral for 10 days(I don't like the thought of possible burns to the scales at the injection site). I would pull up .1 ML and add .2 ML of water just to help ease the concentration on the animals stomach. The treatment rendered the issue with no further problems. Hope your animals pull through for you. Sounds like you caught it in time.

Re: ♥ Baytril Dosage??? Really???♥
First of all, you need to know the strength of the enrofloxacin (baytril) the vet gave you. there's different strengths , I am not familiar with 2.27 % I would have to know the mg/ml.
That would most likely be 10 mg per ml or 20 mg per ml then you could calculate what the dosage for your snake is, for each individual. the usual dosage for URI is 5mg per kg (1000gr) or 5mg/kg for injection, but it has to be higher if given PO (by mouth). Usually the dosage doubles when given orally because the body absorbs less of the medication when taken orally than when taken injectable. So, if you are giving the meds by mouth the dosage would be 10 mg/kg.
I'm a vet tech (not reptile vet tech) but I own snakes (not ball pythons) so I decided to sign up for this forum to answer your question. My 20 lbs Colombian boa is about 9 kg, if he needs 10 mg per kg, he needs 90 mg, if the baytril is 10 mg per ml, then he needs 9 ml of baytril. And just before I forget, baytril is administered once daily, so every 24 hours. that's what PO SID means. By mouth once daily. Hope this helps.
