My BP thinks it's a green tree python....

I'm thinking s/he might benefit from some proper tree hangs like for a GTP or ETB cage. It keeps trying to pull itself up onto this little piece of plastic in the middle of the cage and hang from it...which is split down the middle so it ends up falling.

EDIT: I just watched it curl entirely up around that center piece and sit there for about 30 seconds before the plastic gave way under it's weight and the snake came tumbling down into the water bowl, lol.

Guess I know what I'm buying this weekend.

I think you may need some ground cover aka hides. Imo ball pythons are burrowing creatures. If you think your ball python likes to climb though, it certainly doesnt hurt to put some climbing branches in there. From that pic it looks like theres not much on the ground. How many hides do you have?

Right now on the ground is a large stone waterbowl, a plastic tupperware container with water for almost full immersion and then a half log that it usually goes under

Questions that come to mind are enough heat at the bottom trying to get to a heat source, hides, or is there too much heat on the bottom.

It alternates positions a lot. Sometimes it'll sit and bask under the light for a few hours, sometimes it'll sit ontop of the hide log, sometimes it just crawls around everywhere. It really likes to try to go up though, a lot of times I look over and it's not in one of it's two other spots it's crawling up the side of the tank up near the top. I don't have any thermometers, but I'd say the temp at floor level inside is probably 80ish... the wood chips are lightly warm to the touch

There's a wooden dowel across the top of the tank to support it. The hoops are actually dog toys, which makes my actual dog sad. I'd recommend vinyl-coated wire instead. And I made very, VERY sure to twist the wire tight enough to insure there were no head-sized holes they could poke their noses through and get stuck.

(My guys have plenty of hides to choose from. But given the option, I find they'll spend a few evenings a week perched in the "trees".)

Lawlcat- welcome.

You do not need a soaking bowl - replace it with a hide.

Also, it would help your humidity to replace the lamp with a UTH on a thermostat. Ball pythons do not need light nor do they prefer it, plus it sucks out humidity - which may be the reason your snake is soaking if it is.

Also, looks like you have a screen lid, so I would cover that with some foil 3/4 of the way to help keep the humidity in.


I think the reason he is trying to go "up" is because they prefer a warm spot of about 90, and your ground temp isn't warm enough. Cool side should be about 80, and if you end up keeping the lamp on there for that reason, I would move the water bowl underneath it to promote evaporate humidity.

My '11 pastel male does the same thing, but he will actually sleep in the tree. He has plenty of hides, all the proper husbandry and humidity. He doesn't do it very often, but I have found him a few times just hanging out, curled up on the branch for hours at a time.

Why do you not own a thermometer?
Besides the tank itself, and the heat source, that is the number one thing you need to keep proper husbandry.
Without a thermometer your just guessing what the temperatures are, not wise...:colbert:

I would highly suggest you get some thermometers A.S.A.P. .....digital ones with an outdoor temperature probe can be found at Wal-mart, Lowes, etc. They don't cost very much and they allow you to KNOW what your temperatures are and you don't have to GUESS anymore . :)

I would also suggest a temp gun from Reptile basics.....these are instant digital point and shoot thermometers....a fantastic tool.
