Snickers just ate a mouse "butt first" rather than "head first"....is that bad????
She has never done this before and right before she ate this time she took the mouse out of the tupperware container by the side and thrashed it back and forth in her water dish and finally she at it but she ate it butt first!

I'm now freaked out about frozen/thawed mouse limbs being swallowed the wrong way causing internal injuries!

She seems okay but I have never seen her thrash her already dead prey in her water dish nor have I seen her swallow prey ass first.

    I'm a bit freaked out.

Just watch her, she'll probably be fine. At worst, she could regurgitate, but if she got it down, she might be able to keep it down. Don't stress her out! Nagini likes to eat hers sideways. It's..impressive, and horrifying. :O

She hasn't done it in a while, but if she does again I will so get a picture! She would squish them into a V... Make the rat touch it's toes basically. Her jaw would get so hilariously stretched out after this, I never understood why she'd do this to herself! :8:

often a sign of the food being too small.

other than that, it's 100% harmless.

I have one snake whom is a butt first guy. I think I have seen him eat head first once. It isn't a problem sometimes they will try backwards and not be able to get past the hind legs and either drop it and figure out what is wrong or drop it and leave it be (the one I have typical action I actually have to feed him smaller than I like because.)

Her prey is not too small(it's roughly the same as the thickest part of her body) so that is not an issue.

    Thank you though.

I was only worried because of the mouse limbs being caught up inside of Snickers by being swallowed backwards.

I hope Snickers will swallow her prey head first again next week because even though she seems fine I feel uncomfortable with her swallowing her prey butt first.(It's almost like a "breech birth" were a baby is born backwards)

It may still be too small. You'd be surprised, what you think is the right size may not be for the snake. Should follow the general rule of 10-15% of the snake's body weight to make sure. Besides, feeding a mouse, I have a hard time believing that you couldn't move up a notch. Mice are small.

You may be feeding the right size, but eating backwards normally does indicate the snake wants larger prey. This is because the butt of the rodent is a lot larger than the head when they start on it.

The digestive system is not like the reproductive system of a human in any means, and a snake has an extremely elastic neck. Don't worry so much. The limbs are not sharp or anything.

She isn't eating pinkies, fuzzies or hoppers. She is eating adult mice. I don't think it's time to move her to rats yet.

Like I said, mice are small. Even adult mice. I would weigh it to be sure. Like I said, it may not be too small, but I would check. It's common, so I don't see the problem in checking.

I don't have a "scale" to weigh her but have read on here that that using a fabric tape measure that you should feed prey roughly the same girth as the snake's widest girth.(that is what I have been doing)

Diablo just did everything mentioned on page 1. Head First then tried sideways then took the rat fuzzy from the rear..... had me a little freaked out. Just covered his feeding bin and let him go

It's fine. Young snakes especially sometimes fumble around with their food trying to find the right way to eat it. My BP has gotten a lot better at feeding time, he eats and swallows in 5-6 minutes flat now.

My boa has taken rats sideways a couple times, too. She's a silly one. :P

Seems bps all have some odd eatting habits..lol.. My Cinny has eatten butt first a few times, but my new spider takes the cake, he surrounded the rat pup then all in one swift move coiled the pup without a strike and killed it, then ate it... Was pretty cool to see but kinda creepy to think hes smooth enough to kill without a strike...lol.. Seems as long as the bp has no inital issues with the way its eatting and doesnt regergitate it will be fine..

My female fire ate a mouse sideways last night, I'm sure yours will be fine ;)

They do this all the time, it all goes to the same place regardless of which way it went :) No worries.

Nothing to worry about at all. My one female normal did this at the start and does it every now and then. Doesn't make a difference and she has no injuries. She's a thick and happy bp. lol

I had a breeder try to talk me out a spider for that very reason... I told her it's not something that worries me.

When you or If you ever breed your spider let me know I will gladly take a spider baby :D
