Saluti! Just another Newbie!
Hey all! I came across this site the other day when doing some research on enclosures and couldn’t help joining. I’m not very good at introductory posts, so please bear with me. :)
I’m Tessa, just your average 23 year old graduate student attempting to maintain a small bit of sanity. I’ve loved reptiles in general for just about as long as I can remember which definitely set me apart from my family and friends who are quite scared of them, haha. Some of my fondest memories are of catching Garter Snakes and Gecko’s in the back yard and then chasing my mom around with them (I was just trying to show her how pretty they were).
Over the years I’ve owned numerous lizards, my favorite being my bearded Dragon, Zilla. However, snakes have always been my favorite animal but I have never had the opportunity to own one since both of my parents were terrified of them. Now that I live on my own and am done with undergrad (eeeewwww dorms), I feel I am in a good position to own a snake now. I fell in love with Balls and am going to be getting one in the next couple of weeks. Right now I am working on getting an enclosure ready a little at a time. All I need for the enclosure right now are some hides, a bowl, and some fun stuff for the little guy to play on. I’m a researcher by nature and don’t want to just jump into being a snake owner without knowing what to do.
Anyhow, that intro came out longer then I thought it would! Sorry for my spelling and grammar – English is not my first language.
 <--- Best emote, ever.

Hello Tessa and welcome to BP.Net! If you have any questions please feel free to ask. My oldest daughter's name is Tessa!

Welcome to BP.net. :welcome:

Welcome! And don't worry about your grammar and spelling.....your post was WAAAYYY better than a lot of people's whose first language is English. Make sure you post LOTS of pics when you get your new BP.
If I had to give one piece of advice to someone just starting out it would be to find a breeder to buy your BP from rather than buying at those big chain stores. It gives you a much better chance of getting a healthy animal who is guaranteed to be eating. I don't know off-hand, but I would venture to guess that there are some breeders in or near Central Texas.
Good luck!

Re: Saluti! Just another Newbie!
Thank you all for such a warm welcome!
I'm just super happy that I am understandable. There are times when I get words mixed up :(.
@ Wh00h0069 - I agree, and have been looking around for breeders. However, it has been a challenge. I am currently in Waco, Texas and there is absolutely nobody around here. I've checked online and most of the places are in Austin or Houston. I wouldn't mind the drive to go check them out, but the problem is that it is very hard for me to get off of work since I work 48 hour shifts.
What are your thoughts on ordering online? Or is that a bad idea?
I've also considered calling the Zoo I live next to, and seeing about finding local breeders through them. The guy who heads the reptile unit is very nice.

Welcome to the family Tessa. No need to apologize. You're in the right place so ask those questions.

There are plenty of people who buy online and have animals shipped to them. A large part of my collection was purchased online, just make sure you buy from someone with a good reputation. :)

Thank ya! I think my biggest concern with buying online is making sure that I am home to accept the package. I work two jobs and go to school full time - so catching me home during the day is almost impossible. I would need to find a way to work something out with the shipping company that would allow me to set an arranged meeting time so that I can go pick it up.

Italian is actually my first language, and thank you! I've worked really hard to speak and write in English. :) I'm from Livorno, Italy (in Tuscany). I came to the states for school and am somehow developing this weird half Texas accent.

I am originally from Texas and spent 4 years living in Sicily. I know all about that half accent. For example:
English: Good Morning
Italian: Bon Giorno
Texan: Bwaaahn Geeeooorno...

Re: Saluti! Just another Newbie!
@ LGray23 When I get my Ball, I'll have to make a video of him then - haha.
@ Vypyrz - Hahaha, so epic! I teach a Physics tutorial section at my university for the undergrad and last night I kept pronouncing Volume as "Valium". How did you like Sicily? I have one Sicilian aunt. :)

I loved it there. We used to ride our motorcycles all over Sicily and Southern Italy. Learning to drive a car there was definitely an experience. I eventually learned insults in English, Italian, Spanish and French, just because I kept running out of things to yell at other drivers in the city...

I'm Italian and even I admit we drive like lunatics! I refuse to drive in Italy and just walk or take the train everywhere. It's much safer! I remember when I was first learning English - the first thing I learned was an insult lol.
I am so use to driving in the states, that when I go back home for a visit - car rides give me gray hair. That's saying a lot considering I spend most of my time hauling it in an ambulance. Lol.

Re: Saluti! Just another Newbie!
Welcome! :D
The majority of the shipments I've received showed up between 800 and 900 in the morning. I wouldn't want to bank on that.. but, there is a decent chance that they'll show up early. I'm fairly sure there is something in the Fedex delivery that says 'early morning' or something of that sort. They aren't supposed to deliver after noon, I think.. at least on my shipments. :>
