LOL...just remember they don't stay cute or little. They get big and they get mean. :P Maybe not as big as an alligator snapper, but it's still a darned big turtle with a fierce bite. :O :D

That is so adorable I cannot adequately express it with words....<3

First of all....thanks to everyone for the kind words. This little guy was actually captive bred by my uncle from two snappers that proved out to be het for albino. i didn't pay anything for him.....I am just lucky enough to have an awesome uncle who gave me an awesome free turtle. I have seen prices ranging from $3,000-$5,000 for albino hatchlings online.
He doesn't have any albinos for sale....but if anyone is interested in a 66% possible het albino, he does have some available. PM me for details.
As Judy said....they are far from a beginners turtle. They have very demanding housing requirements and can do a lot of damage if not handled with knowledge and the utmost respect. I'm trying my best to socialize this little guy, but I have not seen too many friendly snappers in my life....lol.

They get calmer than you might expect given their generally sour reputation. Most of that is based off of encounters with wild snappers. In captivity they can be quite calm but the spatial requirements should still deter most people from keeping them.

I've had my common for two years now, and he was about the size of yours when I got him. He's currently in a 180 wide aquarium, and I'm planning on saving up for a 400 when I get a house.
They are great pets, but are not beginner at all. Definitely the most work, and most expenses of all my pets. Though I swear, I plan on having a snapper the rest of my days.
Right now, my biggest problem is with filtration. My filters crapped out, and I'm having problems getting them back up and running, so Dredge doesn't have much water to swin around in until I can afford new ones, or repair the current ones.
Anywho, back on topic. Sweet snapper! I do't care what anyone says, but baby snappers are the cutest. Ever. Then they get big, and are less cute, but more awesome.
-
aww what a cutie! Thanks for sharing!
-
snappers sure are sweet! wish I had the room! :gj:
your albino is a cute little devil
-
I'll post some updated pics soon. He has pretty much doubled in size in the two short months I have had him.
-
Congrats! I was looking at one today for $4500 :O
I use to catch them A LOT when I was a kid and had several WC as pets for a while. They seem to live everywhere and that sharp bite is signature. I do want another, but I will never get over the smell of their poo :D
-
The smell isn't that bad. However, foul water can be pretty disgusting. You better make sure you don't run into filtration issues.
-
Bet you can't wait until he's as big as the one in my avatar.
Biggest snapper I've laid eyes or hands on! Also, super chill and handle-able, not at all typical for a wild animal who's been grabbed.
Keep us updated with pics please, I have to live vicariously through other snapper keepers for now.

Right now I have him in a 75 gallon tank that is only filled 1/3 of the way and I have a Rena XP3 filtering it. The Rena turns over 350 gallons per hour and the volume of the tank is only roughly 25-30 gallons....so my water is crystal clear and odor-free. :D
-
Man that is cute and cool and priced just right bro!!! I love all the snapper turtles but never wanted put all the money out needed to properly maintain one so I too live through other keepers with them :D Big congrats on that new addition
-
I'm a snake guy, but that lil' snapper is wicked!

Mine is in a 180 wide, and I have two Xp2's running, but I've had nothing but problems with mine. :(
If one of them decides to work, the other decides not to. It's so frustrating. I'm looking into eheim, building a sump, but first I'll probably have to completely tear apart my rena filters to see if I can get them up and running.

If you can't get the Rena's to work, eheims are nice as well as the Fluval FX5. The FX5 can filter A LOT of waste out before they slow down and they are a very user friendly filter. I ran them on my fish tanks for years along with a sump with no problems. The FX5 is a lot easier on the wallet as well....$210 on Amazon.com with free shipping.
-
Woot, I'll have to look more into the FX5. I've heard of it, but figured I'd look into eheim (being the 'mercedes' of filters and all that).
However, I was wrong before. I run two XP3's. I don't know why I posted xp2's.

The FX5 is a great filter. I have had and still have many eheims and they ARE great filters but if they are considered Mercedes' than FX5's can be considered BMW's on sale. There is no other filter on the market that offers the filtration, quality and price of the FX5.

awesome looking little guy. I saved a pretty nice sized snapper last spring from being hit by a car. Boy he was meaner then heck!
