My New Rack that I built - similar to ARS
So I decided to put a link to my video showing off my new rack. It just needs paint and heat tape. I am pretty happy with the results!

That is very nice. How will you put your heat tape on that?

Also if you don't mind me asking, what would the materials for a rack like that run?

Re: My New Rack that I built - similar to ARS
Thanks for all the replies! I have been wanting to build one of these for a while. I really like the way ARS has put theirs together and people have really given them some high marks on the net. I love working with metal, and have never had much luck with making melamine racks, so I decided to give it a go. As far as how much it cost for materials, You will save money making one yourself if you have access to a welder and a reasonably priced supplier. You could save considerably! I plan on selling this one and will make more if the response is good. as far as heat goes I will do the same as ARS and freedom breeder with a piece of sheet metal in the back that is held in place with Velcro. As far as how long it took, I would say 5 or 6 hours. I will make a jig for the next ones and plan I doing the whole single level unit that stacks on each other. The best part is I have had such a blast making it and the kind words here is the icing on the cake! Thanks everyone!

I am very impressed! I'd like to see some pics after you get the heat installed if you can. Both my brother and father know how to weld, I'm thinking this might be a good winter project.

This may be a dumb question, but what are the chances of steel racks rusting? I'm guessing the paint minimizes that, but that was the first thing that came to mind when I saw that it was made of steel.

Re: My New Rack that I built - similar to ARS
I will be posting how I actually make them over the next couple of weeks with photos and video of the whole process. I am just try to get a set model that I am going to build. There has been a lot I have learned from this first rack. I had originally planned to make this one a 24 tub unit, but was concerned with the height as well as if I decided to sell it, it would be easier for someone to fork out half the money. I am planning on selling them in my local area of Phoenix, az., to help fund making more. I am curious as to what people think I should charge for them. I am in the process of painting this one with an enamel rustoleum paint. I hate painting and already looking at making a large oven for powder coating. But, that will only happen if I can sell a few. Thanks again for the nice comments. It does make me want to go do more an show you guys how to do it as well.

i already posted in the other thread you mad but after reading this one i had some comments. you said that you plan to sell them and if they're of quality and can be sold cheaper then racks of similar design then you should look into ways to make them shippable (if thats actually a word). you said you would make them stackable so thats a good way to make them shorter, which means cheaper to ship. you could also look into a way to take the legs completely off, like using a bolt to hold the legs to each shelf, or a slide and lock system like they use on warehouse shelves. cost might be a little higher this way but i think 3-4" is a lot better then 12-14" per shelf, those numbers are just guesses to the actual numbers though. good luck with any plans you have for this though and from what i can see you did a really good job on it.

Looks great! Is it all made of steel even to flat sheets? Are you planning on putting ventilation holes?

If you could ship i'd buy some off you. I'm in PA so AZ is not driving distance for me. Just let me know.

Also you don't need vent holes the space around the tubs should be more then enough air space. I would vent holes an option for those who want them. I for one do not need vent holes.

I posted in the other thread. I watched the video and heard you say it's steel. I think this is a project I can do here.

So looks like probably 1" stainless T304 16 gauge tubing?

Did you roll strengthening beads in the sheetmetal or its a weld line for the channel?

What did you use for channel - did you split the same square tubing?

What did you use for tubs?

    Sorry for all the questions!

So the tubs are rubbermaid bus boxes. You can just do a google search. They are heavy duty! The metal is just cold rolled steel. The tops is just 20 gauge sheet metal and the rails are just apart of the top that i have bent in with a sheet metal bender. So each tub has its own solid top. The rails are plenty strong for anything you want to put in them. As far as ventalation, it is just the gap in between the top and box. It has plenty of ventalation. I could always drill holes if needed. The square tubing is 1 inch 16 gauge steel. Hope that answers some questions. I will be working on a very good tutorial of the whole thing.

Thanks man. I started to sketch this out today. I thought you used stainless but i priced the materials out i nearly had heart failure. Figured it was hot roll steel after that. Looks like $175 of square tubing, plus channel, sheet metal for tops and casters which I havent' priced. Cool thing is my local supply shop with cut to length on the cheap then you can get straight to clamping and welding...

I wondered why you didn't use a single piece for the top but now i see you bent each piece to incorporate the rail too. Ingenious! Unfortunately i don't have a metal brake.

Have you started to sell any of these racks? Did you ever come up with a final price for the unit you built? Very well thought out, great job! Seems that these units would compete with Freedom Breader, much lower cost. Wonder what their profit margin is? Thanks
