Snakes ok without water for 2 nights?
I have never done this before so I figure I will ask. We might have to be away for a night or two and the person staying at my place has little to no snake knowledge. I want to pull the water from the tubs so they don't spill it na dhave to sit on damp bedding ( in my tubs I use paper). This whould be ok shouldn't it?
-
I think I'd prefer to leave the water in and risk a spilled bowl. I would rather have them on damp bedding for a day or two rather than not give access to water... Just my opinion, but I'm sure a day or two without water isn't going to kill them. I know they go longer than that in the wild...

+1, I'd rather them be on damp bedding than no water at all.

Re: Snakes ok without water for 2 nights?
They'll be fine either way for just 2 days.
-
you could always fill the water bowls half or quarter full too. Enough for them to access if they need/want a drink, but not so much that if it spills you have a swamp happening.
-
You need to invest in some bowls that cant be spilled. It will make your life much easier. I got lucky and found some really goods ones at the dollar store.

Your snakes will be fine for a couple of days with out water. They do not need water every day like other pets.. 2 days with out water is much better then a cold wet snake when I get home to me.
there also are some cool tricks, and tips you can look up to keep your snakes from being able to tip water bowls "for the future".

Re: Snakes ok without water for 2 nights?
A lot of vendors soak their snakes overnight in their tubs right before a show so that they'll stay hydrated over the weekend. Many snakes go 2 to 3 days without water when they're being displayed at shows.
They'll be just fine. :)

I'd prefer to give them access to water, but for two days your snake should be fine either way. If it's common for you to have issues with water spilling, you may want to get different bowls.
-
Would you like to be without water for 2 days? I think not so I do not think that your snake would like it either.

Take the bowls out, they'll be fine for 2 days.

I would have to agree with almost everyone else, I think it would be worse to have cold wet snakes for two days then no water, as they don't outright drink a lot anyways.

Re: Snakes ok without water for 2 nights?
Thanks I think I will leave the water out. It will only be till Sunday afternoon so they should be good. I am going to pick up two 30 tub rack systems from ARS in a few weeks and that will cure everything. Sadly it isn't the adults that spill their water. It's the Juvi's that love to topple the bowls over. I use deli cups with holes cut in the lids but they still find a way to spill them. I worry more about them sitting in damp tubs and risking RI or something else.

I wouldn't like to swallow a rat whole once a week as my sole source of food. Treating your snake as if it were human is about as silly as treating a human as if it were a snake.
As mentioned before, your snake will be fine for a few days. They can go extended periods of time without access to a water bowl and be fine.

This. I'd leave the water in.

Re: Snakes ok without water for 2 nights?
For most of us, our hatchlings sit in water for a week until their first shed. Ball Pythons are a very hardy type of snake. They wouldn't even blink for 2 days without water or 2 days in a wet tub. Their tub still has the heat on it, so even if the water spilled, It's not going to be cold....and they'd appreciate the humidity.....

Hahaha/\ well put!

Its probably more or less settled and closed, but I see the responses are pretty evenly split between leave it in and not to leave it in. I feel that if its anything under a week, with a healthy, well fed well hydrated snake, you should really take the bowl out if you risk spilling it, especially if its not crucial in keeping humidity up. Unless you'll dip to below 40% without it, I think itll be good. Snakes in damp conditions (which would usually signal cool as well) get easily stressed out, and if its cool as well, easily sick. And its having no access to fresh drinking water should not be a problem and would cause little stress, if healthy and humidity is up. Few snakes drink regularly, at least in my experience, and it is widely accepted that they get a large portion of their hydration from their food and less from drinking. So there really shouldnt be a big issue with the absence of a water bowl for a short period of time.

This is what I always do. I have to refill them more often, but it keeps spills and messes to a minimum. :gj:

PetsMart right now has large no spill plastic food/water bowls on sale for 3.99 a piece. I picked up two for Bonnie and Clyde. It was a pretty good deal for the size and quality, plus no spills is awesome!!

Re: Snakes ok without water for 2 nights?
Everyone made it just fine, I think they thought that when I pull water bowls it means everyone poo while he's away. Now all 60 cages are clean and freshly watered. Feeding starts again tomorrow. Thanks to everyone again.

Great points, I didn't even think about that.
As for my opinion, they aren't going to get scale rot from sitting in water for a day or to. It has happened to me while I was gone for a weekend. I would leave just a little bit of water in the dish rather than take the bowl out completely.

No but then again I am not a snake so its probably a bad argument you are trying to make. I wouldn't survive not eating for 6 months either but snakes do it all the time.

The only thing I would say is that the heating is designed to heat the snake not the water. Water is going to allow the heat to spread much better than air destroying your temperature gradient. Most likely this will not be a problem it could result in a temp that is too high and your snake can't escape or more likely lower the temp below optimal levels. I would not worry one way or the other but I would rather have a snake go without water than sit in water for two days.
I know this even has already gone by but the debate is useful to others.
