Males!

I have a 5ft. BP that I got for free because the original owners "didn't want eggs" . They said "it" was a female, but someone recently told me males could get this big as well. I know the best way to sex them is probing but I don't have a probing kit. Anyways, input would be GREATLY appreciated.

Try popping but do a bit of research and watch a few videos of it on you tube before you Give it a go. Check to see of there are any local herp groups or breeders around you also.

I'll try popping her( I watched Ralph's video on YouTube ) but its strong and If it's a male he would be able to keep his "penes" in.

It shouldn't be too difficult to get him to pop, just be careful.
If really 5 feet, I think it would be unlikely for it to be a male. It's "possible" but that sure would be unusual.

I just attempted to pop her but couldn't see any penes. I'm hoping "she's" a she so I can breed her to my cinnamon! :D

Be careful, if you put too much pressure on the tail you could potentially hurt the penes. I am hoping it's a girl though, that's good news! If you have any local reptile stores around I'm sure they can probe for you for a small fee or maybe even for free.

The reptile store closest to me probes for $5.

I only tried about twice, and didn't see any ppenes Really, the only pet stores around here are PETCO and petsmart, maybe a Pet-O-Rama, but I don't know if they know how to probe. There are a couple breeders around here, though, so I might have to contact one. But I'm almost positive its a female, but that's not good enough.;)

Well, I asked Scott at RedbarnRetiles if he could pop him for me and kindly said he would. So he popped "it" and as soon as he tried we could see plugs, then out came a hemipene. So its confirmed that "it" is actually a "he".... which is unfortunate for me though not too much as I only paid $10 for which was in gas. So I'm yje "lucky one" with a 5ft male ball python. :( woopee

Bah, whatta bummer. Although a 5ft male is HUGE, congrats on the big guy! Any pics? I'd love to see him.

Eh, he probably wont stay here long as I'm just starting out breeding and really don't have room for a male norm. But yeah I'll try and get some pics up ofhim in just a bit.

Aww, my boyfriend would be jealous. When we were new and reading about BPs average length, no one really told us males were shorter generally. We picked up a yearling boy and he hasn't grown an inch over 3 feet! :rolleyes: Not the 6 foot monster Nathan expected :O :D

I would breed him with an exceptionally large female just for the size benifactor.

That's awesome. My little pastel is around 24-26 inches, and a little over 4 months old. I'm hoping he'll get to at least 4 feet; I really want a whopper. :D 5 feet would be awesome. By the way, how thick is your male? Mine's about 1&1/2-2 inches at his thickest.

I'm 5' 11" and can't put my hand all way around the thickest part of his body. So he's pretty thick.

The "O" my hand makes is about 2 inches in diameter with a full grip. How much can you estimate his diameter as, by that? Is it halfway around, 2/3's, what? From a first impression it sounds like a possible 3-4 inch diameter.

Regardless, I'm 5'11'' as well and height has nothing to do with hand/limb size. Typically there's an average, but people grow at different rates. I know people shorter than me with larger hands, and people taller than me with somewhat smaller hands. It's just like feet... not the best size reference. The grip your hand makes is better.

I got a string and wrapped it around the thickest part of his body and measured it be almost exactly 8.5 inches. I'd imagine if he WAS female it'd be somewhere around 10-12 inches

I thought you were not supposed pop adults balls?
