    Mystery baby post-shed... whaddya think?
When I posted pics of this baby pre-shed, some people thought he might be a black pastel... fyi, he came from a clutch with 2 light mojaves & 2 light normals. This guy looks nothing like the mom or mojave dad, but suspiciously resembles my black pastel (who did spend a little time with mom last season). He just shed yesterday, so I thought I'd post some new photos. Think he's a black pastel, or just a neat-looking "dinker" normal?

For comparison, here he is with a (very tiny) normal sibling - she/he hasn't shed yet, but obviously there's quite a difference in coloring & pattern!

Nobody has an opinion? Maybe I should have posted this on the general forum...

Well, it looks like normal pattern but it is a nice dark color. I would say normal because of the pattern though.

IMO He looks to be a normal. They very so much in pattern and color so sometimes they can throw you off.

I know normals can vary greatly, as none of mine look exactly alike - but I've never seen one quite like him, not to mention he looks nothing like either of the definite parents. Weird!

Maybe the black pastel was a second dad, but his egg was a normal? That was my original thought, until people (on my other thread) started saying he looked like a b.p.

That's a great thought. I bet you might be right. Or the mojave's mom/dad's genetics.

I would bet black pastel. In some of the pictures you can see squiggles around some of the alien eyes.

a lot of normals have bouts of this pattern. It does not have the common black pastel pattern.

Well, I guess the mystery remains! :D Think he's worth holding back? He is a confirmed male (showed hemipenes when I popped), so I could breed him within the year - the Mojave dad bred successfully in his first season, so I could potentially make eggs with him by next summer.

    Hi,

    I can't decide.

Can we see a picture of his pattern full length along the side?

I ask because he does look to have the blushing just along the side just above the belly but I can't see many squiggles in the posted pics.

The colour looks slightly off for a black pastel though - but that happens to me all the time trying to get pictures.

I know, it's SO hard to get their colors right in a photo! I need to do an outdoor shoot with him, but of course it's raining this week - and dark right now. ;)

    Here's a slightly outstretched post-shed pic:

And here's a pre-shed photo - kinda fuzzy, so I'll try to get a better one later.

And for comparison's sake, here's a picture of my adult black pastel... as you can see, he's not that "typical" looking himself (almost cinnamon-like).

He looks like a normal to me :gj:

Maybe the male black pastel did hit but it's a normal influenced by his genetics?
The above female black pastel had a normal sibling that had aliens similar to a black pastel...

The neck looks similar to the necks of my granite. So if it does happen to prove I'd say it would be a granite type

Thanks to everyone for the input! Now the big question - do I hold him back or sell? And if I sell him, should I charge more than a typical normal male?
