ball pythons seem super boring now
I have one ball python. About a month or so ago now I got a BCI boa and I just think she is way more interesting and cooler then my ball python. Anyone else sort of loose interest in bp's after getting into boa's? They just seem to be smarter and have more personality to me.

I love my boas and I love my BPs. I won't lie though, my first boa holds a very special place in my heart and losing her would be hard. That being said I have BPs that it would kill me to get rid of too. I just love them all I guess. :)
It's my geckos that bore me a little. I can't even touch most of them because they are tiny and flighty. :(

I have both species as well, and honestly I love all of them. They are so different, and are so special in different ways. It's like comparing apples to oranges. My boa is so cool because he's way more perceptive, seemingly takes it all in when he's out, his feeding response is fierce and so cool to watch, and much more interactive. My ball pythons, although they are all different, are so curious, I love how clumsy they are thinking they can climb things they really can't, trying to get into the smallest creases, they are all much easier to hold and "hang out" with. I love them all differently, I don't think I could get bored of any of my reptiles :D

Different species have different appeals, to me BP are the eye candy however as a handling level and personality level they get beat by the other species I keep without a doubt.
Nothing beat my carpets and my bulls when it comes to personality and intelligence.
Like I said it's a different appeal :gj:

I will always love my bps. It was the first species of snake I ever owned and honestly, the only species I would personally want. My tortoise though, he has stolen my heart for sure!!!

Thats interesting you should say that, I've been thinking about getting a bull snake of some sort in the future. I also want a hognose, any experience with their personalities and behavior?

That's essentially what's going on with us. Not saying I'd get rid of my three little ones, just not as interested in getting more as I used to be. I used to be ALL about geckos, now that I've kept more species I find that I'm more into snakes and frogs in general!

bps are deff the eye candy but the boas and larger pythons have the best personalities IMO

To get on intelligence I got to Retics for that. Extremely intelligent snakes.

I don't think that's completely true. My hypo jungle boa is major eye candy to me, which is funny because her name is Candy. :P
Yeah BPs come in tons of colors and patterns, but there are some really pretty boas out there too.

dont get me wrong i love the boas. especially the hypos, moonglows and sunglows but ya cant beat the bp eye candy just like you cant beat a retic or boas personality.

Re: ball pythons seem super boring now
I love the variety of ball python morphs available now, and they are sweet, but they don't seem to have quite as much personality as some other species. I would say that my boas and retics do seem to be more personable, but I don't love the balls any less because of it.

I'm not "bored" by ball pythons, but they certainly aren't the snake I take out to handle when I'm feeling energetic. I tend to handle my largest carpet python more than just about any other reptile in our collection.

I love my balls and my Boas. I would take more of either one if hubby would agree.
-
I love my two BP's and our RTB equally. Each has their own distinct personality. Gene the BP is our "stoner" because he's so laid back and relaxed about everything. Fuzzy the BP can be a jerk, he likes to hiss at us for random reasons. Ruby the boa is a prima donna. She thinks she rules the house, and she's acted like she wanted to strike several times. They are all awesome but ball pythons are my preference.

Re: ball pythons seem super boring now
Ball pythons are pretty, but very boring, IMO. They are very shy, and hide all of the time. Boas, on the other hand, hardly ever hide, and are a blast to handle.

yeah never said I didn't still love my bp just meant as iv branched out a bit now I find other species more interesting.
-
Boas rock! Bps are cool to relax with. As far as intelligence, neither has yet learned to work the TV remote ;)

:O
Blasphemy! :colbert:

I had kind of a sad experience with my one and only ball python. She was sick when I got her and died a month later despite my perfect conditions. Very sad and very frustrated with the store I got her from. I later learned of many other reptile tales of woe of the same store and learned the owner really only cares about making a buck.
After being really sad about my first ball python I knew I still wanted a snake so I got a Kenyan Sand Boa (who just had a succesful first shed with me) and I love him to death. While he hides under his bedding most of the time, and granted my BP was on her last leg, it seems to me that BPs are just so moody and sensitive, some tend to be nippy (but I guess that goes for EVERY animal, not just a BP.) Anyway, not beginner snake at all! I know KSBs and red tail boas are very different, and the latter seems to be the most popular of the species. BPs are also picky eaters a lot.
If nothing else, my KSB makes me laugh because he really does look like just a big, giant worm and his size and simplicity makes him an extremely manageable and fun pet. :) Sorry if I sounded like I am BP bashing. I love all animals, but the BP is just not the species for me even though I was at a disadvantage with my first one from the beginning.

I agree that BPs are a bit boring. I do enjoy handling my boa and retic more. As for sand boas, I did have a couple of those years ago and I love them. I think they look like the sand worms in beetlejuice ;)
Of course nothing beats field herping and handling wild black rats, fox snakes and such. Nothing boring there!
