Started my breeding project yesterday normal female x spider male
So I noticed the same temperment change in my normal female as I did this time last year in my normal female. Finicky eater, hissing again when I open up her tub which is NOT her norm. So I'm like wth? Them I'm like Oooooh! ok! So I put the spider male in with her last night and this is what I got withing 15 min. Enjoy the picts. :) http://ball-pythons.net/gallery/file...10925-0228.jpg

Your observations on temperament change with the female rang a bell here with me. One of my pastel breeder girls started acting the same way a couple weeks ago and I didn't know why. I bet you're on to something so I'm going to pair her tonite and see what happens. Thanks!

Megarea is a very docile snake, never does she hiss, or thrash her body to one side like she did. She really does enjoy being taken out when I have to clean out her tub she's always wrapping herself around my arm and now I had to tap her with a hook then my hand? Oh hells nah!!! So in went the male, I figured she needed a lil sumth'n sumth'n!!!! As soon as I put him in there she started tapping her tail on the tub, I should have taken a video, just thought of it, grrrr. He coiled around her and was all over her and wam!!! Locked in 15 minutes!!!! I hope to see some pretties!!! So yeah definately, oh and one other thing she herself was keeping to the cooler side of the tub not wanting the warmer side :)

Good luck with your project, hope to see picts of your pairings :D

She's telling you it's breeding time and time to feed her more ;)

Something that strikes me weird is when people thinking a female going off feed is a sign she's wanting to breed
My females want to take a bite out of me and are ravenous about this time of year, time to feed up so they throw good eggs!
I cringe when they go off feed or get picky at this time of the year :rage:

Good luck with your season, hope you get a bunch of webbed snakies :)

Oh I was pounding her with feed, trust me. I kept putting on her tracking 1 med. rat when she was actually eating 2 every feeding. She's put on quite a bit of weight and now she's gone off feeding all together. And she's tak'n herself off the hot side of the tub. Ravenous yes she was and she lets me know this by extending herself out of her tub, thats her way of say'n throw me my rodent woman!!! and throw it I do, lol. but this other behavior is the same she did last season, which is the NOW throw in my male!!! lol. Which is now what I have done, and goes to show cause in 15 min. I had a full blown lock. Gosh I hope I do get a bunch of snakies too, it will be my first bunch ever, I'm so excited . Yes I do as you do freak out when they go off feed. Me this time last year when she went off feed totally freaked cause I didn't know why. Cause I was a newbee so I calmed down and just kept reading and reading and reading and posting questions and reading forums and wala. Thank you bp!!! :)

I do allot of reading on this website it has allot I mean allot of really good information. I also have a really good manual that I purchased at my buddy Bens' reptile store the name is The Ball Python Manual by The Herpetolocultural Library. It too has allot of valuable information. There are allot of people on here with tons of experience, I'm posting these pictures of my normal female and male spider because it was crazy how in 15 minutes I had a lock! Plus it was awesome to me to see so I thought I would share with the rest of you guys, since I have learned a great deal on here and seen some amazing pictures as well. ;)

When you get your normal do post pictures. I love looking at everybodys reptiles.

Unless you purchased her from a friend and know how she was kept and saw her daily and know her health etc. She should be quarantined!!! Its a must to insure the safety of your other snake. I always quarantine mine nothing less than 90 days, some people only do 60 days.

You will still be in the time frame for breeding, and you won't be taking any health risks for either of your snakes. Just a thought since I don't have the info

Well at first for a bit they were together because I had some adjustments to do on my rack. But yes I do quarantine. It was very very temporary and am now keeping an eye on both of them make sure nothing happens. From what I have noticed she is very healthy and weighing in at 1881 empty

I normally always do quarantine, was a minor exception and focusing on both the snakes, she will be quarantined for 60-90 days. And I am keeping close eye on both of them Just in case.

Quarantine is a must, checking their poop is a must! watching and listening for signs of upper respiratory and any discoloration of the mouth for any mouth rot or any type of parasites or mites etc. So much to look for in that time frame but well worth the quarantine, better to be safe than sorry.

Thank you, I also have a VERY nice pastel female that I ooooh so wish was up to weight this season but she's not quite up to weight yet :(. I will be breeding her to this male spider of mine to oh he's gonna be such a busy lil one. But I do have some ideas, just found a friend of mine that has a well I'm not gonna spoil it cause it might not happen, but might have a nice male to add to my collection and if it happens. BOY will everything change :D.

When you power feed how often do you feed? Just curious, I feed every 7 days, thats my power feed and they poop every 2 to 3 days. The cleaning is endless with these balls gotta love that trait. Check out the pictures of my pastel she is a knock out!

Good luck with your plans!! :gj: :)

Well I just found out ive been feeding her the wrong size meal but she's been eating between one and three times per week. They were pinkies so im not horribly suprised, but im upping her to rat pups so im not sure how frequently she'll take a meal yet. Though im going to attempt to remain feeding her every friday and offering her a meal on tuesdays. And a spider pastel would be sweet! I hope that works out for you.

I have to say though my dream as a breeder is to breed my own blue eyed Luec. or a super yellowbelly. I havent really decided which route I want to take.

*EDIT*-I just took a look at that pastel! She's friggin gorgeous! That theres gonna be a hot combo.

Wow that is an unusual feeding and yes I would say the feeding is a tad bit wrong. Rule of thumb is the girth of the snake is what they can eat. Nothing larger than their girth and that is what they eat. 3 times per week thats very time consuming changing to a rat pup definately a better way. My power feeding went from feeding them once every 2 weeks to once a week. Then my female normal that is paired up now was lunging at me wanting more and placing herself on the cooler side. So I would offer her another medium rat at the same time, if she ate it she ate it and she did. Good luck with the change in size of food for your snake, it will make your life allot easier for sure, I've never heard about feeding every 3 days, but then again I don't know everything and never claim to either.

I have to admit I dont want to gloat but I do think my pastel is rather smok'n. I bought her from my buddy Ben Seigel she seems to not have a whole lot of brown and has retained allot of high yellow which is awesome. So I can't wait to see what she produces. Maybe later on this season she will be ready but I don't think so, she is worth the wait tho. :D
