female hatchling deaths

I have 2.2 PHP's that hatched out on 7/5, went to my sons on sat. come home tonight, and walked into the snake room, caught a whif of death, asked my mate, what died!? as I'm frantically opening bins.

He said everyone was fine and that he didn't smell anything :rolleyes:, all adults checked out fine, so I figured maybe it was the lil hatchling that had the hard umbilicus, nope it was fine, all rats were fine.

After opening and checking 50+ tubs, I come to tub 52 and find a dead hatchling, I have no idea what happened, and when I looked in on her female sibling she looks just aweful, and refused her meal tonight. Both males though look great, all husbandry is spot on. I just don't get it :confuzd:

He said they were fine this afternoon when he checked water dishes, I dunno.

I don't know. Maybe something internal like a heart defect that wouldn't have been noticed. I'm sorry for ur loss. Hope u can figure it out.

Are you going to get a necropsy on them? I think that would be the only way to get to the bottom of it. Sorry btw. That really sucks. :(

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I would strongly suggest a necropsy on both of those females. If only you lived in So Cal I could bring them into work and have results for you in no time. How many meals have they had prior to falling so ill? Hope you can figure it out and make sure everyone else is safe still.

What else is in that rack? Have you purchased any new animals? How old were these hatchlings?

You need to follow the strictest quarantine practices from anything in that rack from the rest of your collection until you figure out what is going on. I would do a total disinfectant scrub down of all tubs in that rack... and keep a very close eye on all the other snakes especially ones that were housed around them.

Not suggesting this is the case... A local reptile shop owner recently purchased a snake from a customer and brought it home to his collection. He didn't quarantine it. He started having minor problems with snakes not wanting to eat... Then he noticed what appeared to be slight respiratory infections in a couple snakes... So he bumped up the heat. Then out of nowhere snakes started dying. Starting from the snakes who's tubs surrounded the new snake then spreading out. The vet diagnosed the problem and he was able to medicate and save most of the snakes... But he lost a lot of snakes. I forgot what the prognosis was.

Not trying to freak you out or anything... Just worried about you. Quarantine big time and assume something contagious could be happening until proven otherwise.

Sorry to hear about your loss Lisa. I agree with getting a necropsy done so you can get to the root cause.

Lisa had either Of these animals eaten since they hat he'd for you? It sucks for sure but the more you have the more you see, had three babies who were established eats just die. Not all at once but still It happens.

it happens. sucks but it happens. i would listen to cavanaugh and quarentine. i would also make sure you sanatize your hands every time before handling other animals. alot of things are not airborne transmitted but are transmitted through contact such as crypto. i would take the bin out bleach it, dry it, then wash it. also wouldnt hurt to bleach the rack as well if ya can. necropsy will give ya more answers then we can since we can just speculate based on the lack of eyes on experience with your situation. i wouldnt beat yourself up about it if your husbandry is on point. i had a similar situation happen where i had a litter of gaboon rhino viper crosses born and lost 18 out of 22 in the litter. and it was atributed to a bacterial thing that the mother had. now its different because they are live bearing and balls are egg bearing but i can sympathize with ya. it sucks to have an animal die but it happens

Just had my first established eater death... I sold a male spider to an established customer about three weeks ago. Out of nowhere it died yesterday... It had just eaten 2 days ago. For what I can tell the guy didn't do anything wrong.

I have no idea what the hell happened with that.... I told him I would replace the snake but first we need to wait a few weeks to make sure nothing else Is going on with his other snakes (half of which he got from me!)

Did you hatch these out or did you buy them? If you hatched them then it is more than likely just a problem they were born with and I wouldn't worry too much about disease unless you have recently added something to your collection.

Sorry you loss these girls Lisa it happens I had a het albino feeding great just die last year out of the blue. Something must have been really wrong inside.

I know this bad luck will be made up too you real soon.;)

They were housed in my 24 hatchling rack, have not purchased any new animals in over 6 months, they hatched out 7/6

The other snakes are doing fine, these girls were housed on seperate levels, at opposite ends of the rack. I removed their tubs & disinfected the rack.

sounds like it was just a genetic problem. I hope a necropsy will eventually shine some light on what went wrong, but if you haven't added anyone new, I wouldn't worry excessively for the rest of your collection. your skills as a keeper are redoubtable, and it's unfortunate that two females died (considering only any potential dollar loss), but I am sorry that you lost two hatchlings that you invested so much time and care in producing. hope the rest of the
clutch proves to be free from any malady.
