Spring or tap water?
I was just wondering what everyone else gives their snakes. I use spring water because I worry about things like chlorine and other things that tend to be present in tap water.

There's not enough chlorine to harm it. What else are you worried about?
-
Tap water won't hurt them. If you're concerned about the chlorine, fill up a container and let it sit out for a few hours. The chlorine will escape.

Re: Spring or tap water?
I use bottled drinking water. I used to use tap water, but it left a flakey white ring of crud in their water dishes. I figured that junk couldn't be good for them. I sure won't drink it myself!

That's dumb. The white stuff is harmless. It's hard water deposits, mostly calcium carbonate which is what egg/sea shells are made of and salt. Which are also in your bottled water.

Re: Spring or tap water?
I live in the middle of nowhere. I go to a spring and get water for my snakes and rodents.
-
I don't have city water out where I live. We have a well. But I imagine if I did have city water I'd still give my BP tap water. In the wild they sure drink much worse than what is in tap water. :D
-
Re: Spring or tap water?
I buy distilled water for my snakes because we have a well and that water goes thru a water softening system - I was concerned with the high salt content so opted for bottled water.
-
Chlorine evaporates very quickly. It is probably gone by the time the snake actually takes a sip, unless it drinks within the hour of putting the water bowl back in the cage.
Tap water always for me.
-
Chlorine doesnt kill us. Have seen the quality of water in africa that they have survived on for thousands of years? I wouldnt think too much about it
-
I use tap but filtered water for my Animals...:gj:

That was another reason I use spring. Tap water seems to leave a film after a day or so. I change water every other day.

You don't need to get insulting, people don't all know about or agree about the same things.
-
Thanks for chiming in everyone. I guess when it comes down to it, tap water is just fine. However, I feel better giving them the spring water which at .50 a gallon, it's not breaking the bank.:)

Re: Spring or tap water?
I give my snakes spring water too. Where I live we have a well and the water is really super hard. I think the calcium was over 300 ppm. If you were to boil a pot of our tap water dry there is a very shocking about of calcium left. I worry that way to much calcium might cause some type of bladder stone or something similar. There is a store near us where I can get 3 gallons of spring water a a quarter, so that's what my whole family drinks (snakes included).

The white crud is perfectly safe, its just mineral deposits like calcium from hard water, which are not present in bottled water due to the excessive filtration and purification they do. The minerals are fully natural and present in all water, harmless in the concentrations any tap water would contain, so relax. Its just a slight eyesore at the most, but is easily removed with a wipedown using lemon or vinegar.
And yes nock why do you have to be so angst? You got something wrong with you?
-
Re: Spring or tap water?
WE use tap water after it has been filtered and set out over night:D
-
Re: Spring or tap water?
When you have around 50 snakes, tap water is a lot easier / economical.
-
People write a lot of ignorant statements on this board not related to snakes. I feel the need to correct them.
Also I'm waiting to go off on someone who claims that voltage goes through something too.

You mean like the white calcium deposits your snake pees out?

Re: Spring or tap water?
I use tap, I really find it hard to believe that people would give their snakes bottled water. They are snakes, been around since the dinosaurs drinking pond scum...I think they can handle tap water... lol
-
I use tap water, but I've been adding a product to remove chlorine. Do I not need to do this? I guess I'm kind of paranoid because I used to keep tropical fish, and when you're a fish person you obsess over water.
-
I don't use bottled water at all, ever. It's an epidemic in this dang continent.
So, my snakes get tap water.
-
Re: Spring or tap water?
I've always used tap water.
-
I use tap water for me, my snakes, my tarantulas, my cats and my bird. All of them are doing marvellously and never had any issues linked to drinking tap water. :gj:
-
Tap here.
Although when my normal had shedding issues (just switched her over from tank to tub; hopefully that will fix her problems), i used the warm bottled water from the dispenser I have to soak her in. Don't ask me why...I really have no idea why I didn't just soak her in warm tap water.
-
I am so confused as to why people baby their snakes so much lol; I mean cmon these animals survived millenia because they grab their prey and use their entire bodies to strangle the animal to death. You really think a minuscule amount of chlorine (that will evaporate within an hour) will do any harm to it? Snakes are hardcore man, they can have a showdown with a rat and just sit there going "COME AT ME BRO!".
tl;dr: I use tap water...lol

Seriously? You want to call me out? Weren't you just talking about how you only feed your male once or twice a month? (I added a link to the thread in case you forgot about it.) And you were wondering why it didn't weigh as much as it should and you are calling me ignorant?
Of course I'm ignorant about pythons. I just got my first bp ever about 2 weeks ago. I am not an expert so I spend time in the forum learning. You however don't really seem to care or listen to people that know more than you.
I know that snakes can handle calcium, but mine is excessively high. In case you miss understood what I'm saying ... when I say excessive, I mean that a doctor looked over the calcium levels in my water and told me not to give it to my children very much. Too much calcium is bad.
If I lived in a city I wouldn't have a problem with giving my snake tap water. But since my landlord doesn't take care of the well like he should, I just keep that spring water around. It's a freaking quarter for 3 gallons. For that price I'd say that it doesn't cost me so much that I can't afford to be safe rather than sorry.
p.s. I know the "the white stuff" is okay. I also happen to know that I should feed my snake 4 times a month. Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
Sorry for the rant, but I've had enough of this dude.

Well excuse me for being dumb! At least I don't have to spend time scrubbing crap out of my BP's water dishes anymore. But you have a point. That half a penny I spend filling a water dish is likely to break me.
It must be diffucult living with such inferior people surrounding you. How did you get to be such a genious? Were you born with it, or did you have to study?:bow::bow::bow::bow::bow:

I'll tell you one thing, I'm smart enough to read an entire thread. Read the end of the thread and see what I said about feeding my snake more often.
I don't care how much bottled water costs it's still more of a drain on the environment than tap water, but do what you want. It doesn't bother me.
Yet I digress, did your doctor really tell you not to give your kids tap water because it has too much calcium in it? Did he tell you not to give them milk either? That has a lot of calcium. Soft drinks and Gatorade have a lot of sugar and other dissolved solids in them too might lead to a kidney stone. Only fresh distilled water, fresh organic fruits and vegetables, and organic free range meat for precious little Johnny.
By the way did you know if you only eat an organic vegan diet your poo no longer smells? It's true, try it some day.
Finally, I haven't been sorry. Mr. Snake is still alive and kicking, I'm about to try to feed him again since it's late and it's a picky eater. Pisses me the hell off when I have to waste a rat. But I'll get over it, like everyone should get over what someone says on a stupid forum.
-
Why do you keep coming back to answer on threads? If this forum makes you so angry and you think it's so stupid then why come here at all? You constantly demean others, are rude, insulting, and childish. In my personal opinion, I don't think you're an adult yourself. You have far too much of an anger and personality issue. You seem to me to be a very well versed and intelligent adolescent to possibly late teen. At least I hope that's what you are.. If you're an adult, all I could do would be to laugh at you and shake my head.

Dang, Mr. Genious, seems like you might need a little refresher course on the proper use of punctuation. Your use of a clear subject in each sentence is a little fuzzy too. But what do I know, being dumb and all.

Read my other posts, I've got a BS in math. That definitely makes me older than 19. I hope you're enjoying this forum as much as I am. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

A BS in math? That stands for Bull Shoot, right? Oh, no no no, it's Bast... I mean Bachelor of Science. Stupid me! Well there you go, you got it in writing. Anyone who can earn a four year degree must be a super genious!:bow::bow:
Congratulations on being so much better than us mere mortals!

I dont know whats worse, the troll, or the people feeding the troll.
You called the idiot out, is there really a need to continuing a conversation with it?

Really, since he's showed up it's the same every thread he visits. People, as hard as it might be, either ignore, or at the very least don't keep up the argument with him. It just makes it worse.
-
Re: Spring or tap water?
I personally am done listening to him. I only got involved because he picked me out personally. I'm not going to argue with someone who can't understand how high 300 ppm is. I have tons of things that I could say to him but he's not worth my time. If I knew how to block him I would.
-
if humans drink it so can they. in the wild im sure they don't always drink the cleanest water.
-
I've always used tap water for my animals and my tap water is very hard. To the point where I need to run a little vinegar in my dishwasher in every load I do to keep the lyme from building up and to be sure my dishes rinse clean.
So to clean the lyme ring in my snake bowls, I put the ceramic bowls in a wash tub with vinegar water once a month or so between regular cleanings. The plastic bowls get scrubbed with a baby bottle brush that I use just for those bowls. They are plastic dog bowls that I use for the larger snakes. A quick scrub around the inside with every refill keeps them from getting nasty.
The only thing I use bottled water for is my scorpions because insects and amphibians are extra sensitive to the chemicals in tap water. I figure if it's recommended to only use spring or distiller water for springtails and dart frogs, then it must also be true for the scorps.
As someone else said earlier, chlorine will dissipate out of any water that sits for a very short time in open air with no cap on it.
-
Re: Spring or tap water?
I use spring water from a spring not bottle spring water. my snakes do well with it. I don't have a problem with someone using tap water or bottle water. whatever works for you. there's so many different ways we keep our animals and what works for one, might not work as well for another. my snakes would most likely be fine using tap water. but getting tap water would be harder than getting spring water where I live. I don't think that there was a wrong answer to his question. but reading all the posts, sounded like many were defending what they used.
-
Re: Spring or tap water?
ive only ever used tap, except maybe once or twice, but luckily we have really good tap water here:D
if i lived in california though i would use bottled, my :grandma: has terrible tap water:puke2: lol
-
Tap water out of my brita pitcher, lol, since my little brat of a snake is a bit spoiled. We've got pretty hard water, I cant stand the taste of it unfiltered, so I'm at least that nice to my snake.
-
I use bottled water for me and my snakes. After reading this thread, I am in awe. Seemed like that guy goes out of his way to try to bash someone. Seems like he thinks he is better than everyone because he "sais" he has a BS in math. Such a shame.
