Air Force puts more bite in pet regulations
The list of blacklisted critters is long under the Air Force's new pet policy: arachnids; reptiles; rodents, except hamsters and guinea pigs; ferrets; hedgehogs; pot-bellied pigs; monkeys; skunks, raccoons; squirrels; farm animals; and five kinds of dogs — pit bulls, Doberman pinschers, Rottweilers, chows and wolf hybrids — as well as any dog that displays "aggressive or dominant behavior." Military dogs are allowed in base housing with the permission of the base commander.

It's been like that on my base since I moved here in 2009. I'm glad I live off base.

Why anyone would willingly subject themselves to the craziness of base housing beyond me. It's like the strictest HOA in existence.

    You have extra BAH? :O .... :P

I'm not looking forward to the day that hubby might become a Wing Commander and we would be forced to live in base housing for the duration of the assignment.

The one real upside to living on base though....you can set your AC/heater to your absolute favorite temps, even in the hottest or coldest times of the year, and not worry about outrageous utility bills. :P

But seriously...for anyone keeping exotic pets...(or even an extremely UNexotic goofball of a doberman  ) military housing must be avoided. :(

I guess having a short commute is an advantage, but definitely not worth it with all their rules.

I'm pretty happy living off base, I just feel bad for anyone forced to move into base housing.

This is why we moved off base 5 years ago. I refuse to give up my reptiles.

Im guessing most of you are military and have snakes or other reptiles of some sort. I have a question, I am stationed overseas and before I left the states I left my ball python with my mom cause I didnt know the if we could ship snakes overseas. Well I bought a corn while I am overseas and was wondering how I could ship her back home to the states when I pcs? Any advice?

That's a really good question. I know you can't just schlep ball pythons back and forth overseas...you need specific (and not cheap) paperwork filled out to export and import them. But I have no idea about corn snake regulations. I would suggest finding a breeder in the country you are in that exports animals and see if they have any suggestions. I doubt they actually export corn snakes to the States...but they might at least know what's involved, or where to look to find out.

Your best bet will most likely be to find that snake a good home in its current country, then buy yourself a new one when you get back to the states. But maybe there is another solution. Good luck.

Living off base is extra money in pocket but traffic at gate.
On base is like no traffic, and good gas.
