    ASF babie Cannibalism Help!!
So I have a adult colony of 1.3 ASF. They had a about 18. I had about 3 that died off and they just drug them into the middle of the tank but never ate them. The babies are about ready to separate into their own small colonies. But their are still a few that arent 100% ready. So the past few days i have been going in and finding a babie with its head ripped off, and no where to be found.
Should i go ahead and remove the ones that are ready and leave the ones that aren't and pull them as soon as I can?

I would separate if they are eating and drinking on their own and see if you can weed out the culprit. When I found mine I it was the male and the females never accepted another male :(

I have yet to see any of them eating or drinking on their own but there are a few that are running around like crazy and always hiding so there is no way they are still getting milk.

You can try but I would give them a few more days and observe them to see if they are eating and drinking

I often forget about the trouble I had with junk food! Now with quality block the only time I see this is with young beeders that the babies are stillborn

I have 30 breeder groups going on Mazuri 6F and I still see this sometimes. It's usually the male and he gets fed off immediately. The females will usually take in another small male with minimal scrapping.

If their eyes are open, you can separate them out. They can take care of themselves just fine.

Not true, and bad form. Separating them that early causes aggression and malnutrition.
They need to nurse as long as possible/they want, and be separated as late as possible, if you want to have the healthiest and least aggressive animals.

I do it, and so do a lot of other people who breed them as feeders. I've never had any problems doing it that way.

Perhaps it'd be nice once in a while if you let people speak from their experiences without trashing them and saying they're wrong just because they don't do things like YOU do things. You have your own forum now, yes? Go play God over there..

From personal experience, and fact, this creates more pleasant and healthier animals.
That's part of the reason that most ASFs are very aggressive.

I did not trash you, and i'm sorry you're offended.

Hi, you need to remember one very important fact here on Bp.net most everyone posting in this sub forum is breeding ASF's to feed their Ball pythons. They are not pets to us they are food for OUR pets. If the OP wants to separate babies that are obviously feeding on there own they will be perfectly fine.

I realize this, and I also feed mine. But health and temperament are something that all breeders should have as a common goal. :)

Will the babies live, and grow? Yes.

Will they be as healthy, and non-aggressive as ones left with their mother? No.

That is my only point here. :)

Thanks everyone for the feed back. I will probably separate them tonight. I have seen them eating small food. I don't want them to be aggressive but I would rather have them be aggressive then to keep getting their heads ripped off. I need these to start branching out so I can start using them as food.

I separated them tonight. It turns out they have killed 4 of the babies in less than a week. I must not have seen two of the bodies in time.
Hopefully they do well on their own.

    Don
I don't have any specific number of days or weeks that I separate them. When their eyes are open and they hop around, that usually is enough. When I do separate them it is into male and female grow out bins. I'm running around 18+ sets right now of 1.2 and 1.3's.

What a shame. I hope they do better for you! Good luck!

They are doing fine. Now I did end up finding out who the cannibal was. It was the mother of the litter. I caught her right in the middle of the act, another female had a litter. I let her finish her dinner then feed her off.
