What was your favorite piece of tech as a kid?
For me is was all about the Atari 2600. A joystick and a red button was all that was needed to fly, drive and battle my way to happiness. We didn't have a lot of money so I got the games after they had been out for a while and had been discounted or bought used. My Mother would sit on the floor with me in front of our big, heavy console tv and play Space Invaders for hours a week. She actually liked it and enjoyed having something we could do together as did I.
    So what about you guys?

My computer nerdiness started on an ancient Apple II E my parents got as a handme down from a relative and then progressed from there. I used to play all sorts of terrible games on real "floppy" discs :D

I know this sounds goofy, but my dad was in ENT research and we had the first bell and howell speech synthesis chip, it was a lump of black silicone (hardened in an ice tray, no kidding) with some wires sticking out of it. Hook up a battery and a speaker and depending on which wires you connected you could make it say the vowels. That's it. just A E I O or U and somehow this was fantastic at the time. . . It sounds so lame now. . .but we actually had lots of fun with it, and you can bet I was the only kid on the block with one! We also had a 4 in 1 pong console black and white paddle game. . . At least I think it was black and white, we only had a black and white tv so it was the same difference to us! Ah, the good ol' days

I was a big fan of the Lite-Brite. I know it's not too techy.

I remember being fascinated when I received a lite brite for my birthday as a kid. I was so much easier to entertain then!

Merlin. That was awesome, so much better than Simon!
We had a C-64 too, I think we were the first in our 'hood to be so modern. Our neighbors had an Atari, I thought Pong was the cat's meow.

My grandparents raised me, so while other kids my age were playing Nintendo and other such "high tech" games, I had a Pong Console and an Atari. I loved Pong. It was the simplest game in the world but it kept me entertained for hours. Space Invaders and Pit Fall took up a good bit of my younger years as well.

And on a side note. My grandfather had an 8 track player that absolutely fascinated me.

Floppy discs....I remember when those were "high tech"....our first computer was a TI-99/4a....and we used cassette tapes hooked up via a standard cassette tape player. And that was pretty darned exciting!

I LOVED Pong as a kid...and we had some game console a few years later, but I don't remember what it was called. I think it was some knock-off system similar to Atari, but never developed into a household name. Pong brings back fond memories!

My FAVORITE though....was the first hand-held electronic game...a "football" game with tiny red blinking lights and you had to move your blinking light across the field without getting "tackled" by the other lights.

The first affordable (for my poor family) hand-held calculators were pretty fun for us kids, too. :P It didn't take much to amuse a kid back then!

I'll never forget the Christmas we got the Atari. My brother and I played Tank for something like three days straight. That one, and Night Driver were favorites.

Anything remote control was fun, too. Though back then, they had a cord from the remote to the car. Come to think of it, the vcr remote had a cord too.

Couple other memorables were betamax, and when we got our Tandy.

    -Honda Trail 70 dirt bike.
    -Daisy pellet gun.

Our most used piece of tech was actually pretty low tech, spatulas and little plastic beach shovels, that we used to wage our "Biscuit Battles" out in the pasture.

This is an awesome thread. I never had an Atari so I went to a neighbors house to play. I did however (you ready for this?) have a Texas Instruments home computer... Eeeek!

I had a bunch of games for it. Many were similar to Atari games. I was on that thing all night growing up in grade school lol!!

After that, my favorite thing was Nintendo, then Super NES. I almost rotted away playing those.
