NEED HELP: Hatchling with belly button issue?
This was the last hatchling to come out of my albino x 100% het clutch. She/he came out yesterday afternoon, and the "issue" was significantly smaller. I noticed it, but thought it would just go away...it was maybe the size of a grain of rice but not as long. I was checking the babies tonight and noticed there was some blood in his/her tub and that it was looking much bigger.

So, what is it? What should I do about it? Dry paper towels or wet paper towels? I have her on damp right now.

I really appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance.

That doesn't look like the umbilicus, but rather a hernia. I would try to gently push it back inside and definitely keep her on moist paper towels.

Hopefully someone else will comment that has more experience with this specific problem. I did have a couple of babies that had herniated tissue, but it didn't look quite like that.

    Good luck!

It seems too dry to push it back in....

If it's growing and it's too large to push back in, I would suggest a visit to the vet. They may need to make an incision to get it back in and suture it up afterwards.

Hmm, yeah the color is different, and since it's hard I have no idea what to do. I had one this year who had a decent amount of umbilicus dragging. It took a couple days on wet paper towels, but it healed up on it's own. I'm not sure what to do in your situation other than leave it on wet paper towels and wait till someone more experienced chimes in.

It will fall off in a day or two. Keep her on damp paper towels and she will be fine. Nothing to worry about.

Ok I went to check on her again and the big part had fallen off...I guess me picking her up made her want to cruise her cage a bit. Now it looks like this:

    Thoughts now?

Is it ok that it is bleeding a little?

Its normal, its part of the umbilicus and the sac. They as long as kept moist will shrink and fall off. No problems. In another day or 2 be completely gone

OK thanks for all the quick replies!! I originally thought it was umbilicus and wasn't concerned...and now that it is looking more normal I'm feeling much better about it. Thanks again!! I'll give an update tomorrow.

Whew! Glad that's all it was. It looked painful! I had never seen one looking like that! Glad it's gone down!

I'm glad it worked out. :D It was pretty strange looking from what I've experienced. Never a dull moment with these worms. :P

It happens. nothing to worry about. Just leave it alone and in time it will fall off and the hole will seal and heal.

I used to experience this when I rushed them out of their eggs... now that I don't do that any more, It hasn't happened again.

Do you mean "rushed" by cutting/cutting early? I did cut these at day 52...but this hatchling was the last out...on like day 65...so she didn't seem rushed. I have heard before that cutting early makes them stay in the eggs longer. I'm not sure if that's true, but it seemed to be the case with this one!

Also, she/he is looking much better today. It is clearly healing up. I think that maybe it was bleeding a little and then got kinda gunked up..and that's why it looked so big...it was like a scab.

I don't normally cut eggs any more. I only see things like this when I cut them.

IMHO the entire process goes better when you don't cut the eggs... all the way up to how quickly and easily the hatchling eats. That said I will still do it on a rare occasion...
