I want 2.8k worth of snakes and no one understands!!!!

Grrrrrr. My want list is growing but my family thinks I am nuts! My last purchase was $275 and they thought that was crazy. They make me feel kind of guilty for buying these critters. My husband does not really like snakes and just kind of deals with them because I like them but he is far from obsessed like I am. My kids look at me like I have two heads as I look at pages and pages of different color snakes that all look the same. How do you guys deal with those close to you that just do not understand? How do you justify your purchases to them? Do you feel guilty? Just wanted to vent a little.

Its called a hobby. allocate a certain amount of funds to it on a 1/4ly basis and stick too it. and to justify it, tell them its because they all drive you nuts!

My family and my girlfriends family don't understand my passion. They hate snakes. My girlfriend is the only one who supports me. I told them someday when I'm making thousands on my amazing new morphs to not come knocking on my door for cash. I showed them the first male lemon pastel coral glow on NERDs site going for $65,000 and the bout died at how much it was going for. And just a little extra tid bit my list is costing me $12,000+ for all 22-24 snakes.

Yeah, it's a hobby, some people spend thousands on fishing equipment, some people spend thousands on snakes. And remember, some people will just never "get it".:D:D

I have it pretty easy right now. I live alone in WI and my family all lives in NH or MA. I just don't tell them about my new snakes any more. :P

Well accept for my sister, but she gets it. She's going to move in with me next year and she already has her own collection started. :D She currently has 2 rat snakes that I am taking care of. It's too bad she prefers rat snakes to pythons or I could have someone to help me build my collection. :P

Most people I think just won't get why you are spending so much on snakes, but they probably have hobbies you don't understand or aren't as passionate about that they spend money on. So to each his own. :)

There aren't a lot of people out there who think dumping a bunch of money into snakes is a good idea. Can't say I blame them ;)

I totally agree with this. Everyone needs a hobby! Tell them you could spend $275 on a snake or $275,000 on a hotrod car. Which would they prefer??? (They'll choose the car, but you don't have the money for that. Sooo.....) :rofl:

Not so sure about that, but so much cooler.

i only have one bp as of now. but i have a couple hobbies that cost a lot more. at least if you do some breeding you may possibly recover some cash or offset the outflow a tad :D

i dont try to explain or justify my spending to family members, i work hard and make sure needs are met first so extra cash is spent enjoyably and guilt free :D

I'm blessed because Becky has as much of a passion for it as I do if not more. She is constantly reading this forum and looking up different morphs and planning future projects. It's really an amazing feeling knowing that she is truly passionate about the same thing I am. I guess we are that way in most of life, we live together and are partners at work as well (paramedics) so we are together pretty much 24/7 and it's perfect. As for the rest of my family, my oldest daughter has one snake and has decided she wants to breed colubrids (I'm so proud :). My two little girls 5 and 4 are in love with the snakes and are constantly wanting to hold them when they are here. I guess all around I'm pretty lucky.

My girl was always riding my ass about all the time and money I spend on my collection.... Then I took her to the portland reptile expo which was pretty packed for an oregon expo. I spent like $500 on new snakes and supplies on the ride back I looked at her and said see I'm not the only person in the world that's this crazy since then she has cut me alot of slack lol. I just don't think the regular public realizes the amount of people obsessed with reptiles whether its ball pythons, boas, leopard gecko, whatever.

i have a very modest list of 8 snakes coming in at 2300 bux and plan to have them all by next summer (probably wont happen until the end of 2012 though). my roommate actually likes them and is thinking about getting into kings or corns just to mix it up a little. my roommates gf used to mostly afraid of snakes but in the few months ive had eddie she's come around to actually holding him which is just funny to watch. and the other day she actually sat down and listened and talked with me about bp breeding and genetics and im thinking she's a lot better about them now but does think im a little nuts about wanting to spend that much on a few snakes.

You have 10 snakes , why do you need any more?
This money could be spent on an extra special family vacation or other family affairs.

this literally made me LOL.

I surf Kingsnake.com in my online class at school, (it's pretty much a free hour) and I'm always talking to myself about how good of a deal this or that snake is, or how I would love to have a particular morph. All the kids around me will give me these strange looks, then freak out at the prices. I just look at them and say, "Once you catch the bug, you're hooked. I can't explain this." XD

They are addicting. What I really want is a rectic....but they are illegal here. :(

you know it makes me feel like I am a cheap person. I can only fund my snake aquiring via trades andwhat little I can make cutting grass( most of the money goes back out in gas, supplies, and helpnig around the house. PLus trying to visit 4thesnakelady when I can( man I wish being in love didn't cost so much at times for travelingto see her) each trip about 80 bucks my family would crap they knew that lol.
I have a low snake wish list cause i figure if I get the basic stuff I can build from there ( I love to trade my adult resseives out for hatchling that are a codom and het) :tears:

I only budget out $40 a week for my snake fund... that's all I can afford while trying to save for my own place.

My boyfriend understands the expenses of my hobby.. He's into computers. Those pieces cost about as much as the snakes I want--and they don't reproduce. ;) So my hobby might be able to help his a bit

My family thinks I'm nuts but are supportive. They know I've got a good head for business and I don't jump into things lightly. My friends that I tell know me well enough and are excited to see me happy about something like this. They are all total nerds though. :D

I live in an artistic community so a lot of the people are very open minded and interested in learning(most artsy people are!)...So when I give them even a single fact about a snake that makes them realize their perception of them is wrong..they tend to be all over me with questions and start researching on their own to find out more. Which is kind of awesome!

My grandma however thinks I'm going to die in my sleep, choked to death by my collection of demon animals who will plot my demise... :D LOL!

btw, I want to breed, and I am planing on starting with 5 thousand worth of snakes...possibly more!! Just for my first season! I know I'm crazy!

^not crazy....the males I'm getting for my first breeding season are about $6-7,000 for just them add another $7-8,000 for my females....and those are 2011 babies!
