First hello and morph decisions
Hey Forum,
I haven't posted anything on the forums, but I've been using the account to search for information. There are so many good threads here to be read, just by using the search function. So, thanks everyone!
Anyway...
I'm attempting to narrow down my morph choice and am willing to spend up to about 500 dollars. I like the pastels, mojaves, and hypos the most so far, even though there are other morphs within my price range.
My main question is about the hypo (ghost) morph. Do these tend to have hints of purple on them because of the lack of black pigmentation? Pictures are sometimes hard to see the colors...
Lastly, if anyone wants to post opinions about those morphs I mentioned, or any others within the 200-500 dollar range, I'd love to read them.
Thanks for all the great information on this website!

If your only wanting to spend 500 I would go pastel male, and female mojo.

purple.......no, not that I have seen. Blacks and shades of grey yes.
their brightness is really hard to catch in a picture, AND UVB lighting makes them look crazy bright:O

Are you wanting to breed or just for an interesting pet??

Re: First hello and morph decisions
I'd just like a nice-looking, interesting pet, and don't plan on breeding any time soon. Not sure if I ever will... Desired a pet snake since I can remember and am finally ready financially and mentally to keep one. Researching at the library and online about ball pythons made me interested in them more than other snake species.
Thanks for the comment about their typical colors PitOnTheProwl. I would agree that pictures are hard to grasp the beauty of these animals. I still tend to like the hypo more than others. Although, the pastels seems quite bright in their own regard.
To DCReptiles, having those two pastel/mojave would be pretty neat. Plus, the potential for hatching pastaves is there. However, the start up cost of all equipment and an adult enclosure is plenty already. So, I think I'll be sticking to one animal for the time being. Maybe someday. <shrugs>
Thanks for the welcomes and comments. It's been fun checking out these morphs and looking at as many pictures as I can on this website and others.

If your interested in hypos you could pick a male up for around 200-300 or so at a show, but you could also get a nice looking male pastel for 75-125 at a show also

Buy a hypo female now, but the time shes old enough to breed and you decide to, you can pick up a co-dom hypo or co-dom het hypo.

I say go with what you like. You mentioned liking hypos, so I would go with a really nice orange ghost like PitOnTheProwl posted. Second choice would be the mojave. Both look great as adults.

Re: First hello and morph decisions
Thanks for the comments all.
I've been looking at adult pictures of all the morphs I had mentioned to see how their hues change. It seems to vary from animal to animal, but both the hypos and mojaves seem to hold their patterns very well. I think it's amazing how each snake's pattern stays the same throughout their life, kind of like a fingerprint.
I'll let everyone know what I choose. Making sure my husbandry is spot-on at home before I have one shipped though. :)

Welcome to the site.
I would find a local reptile show in your area. You can pick up ghosts for a really reasonable price these days. I find them to be one of the best base morphs. Unlike most pastels they seem to get better with age instead of darker.
As every one else said, go with what you like the most. If you can find a show in your area it will make your decision much easier. You will see that one snake at your perfect price range and you will be FORCED to make the purchase.
Happy hunting!
Here is a picture of my ghost when I first got her at around 70 grams.

Here she is now at over 500 grams and growing, she is next to a normal for color comparison.

They have amazing heads with jet black eyes

Re: First hello and morph decisions
Those pictures are much appreciated eel588. :)
As far as shows go, I missed the last one in the Portland, OR area in August because I was fishing in Ontario, Canada. The next show isn't until next year in my area. Unless someone finds another show/expo in the PNW area that I haven't found yet, it looks like I'll be ordering the snake online or waiting until the next expo. <shrugs>

Re: First hello and morph decisions
Well, I've decided to go with my gut and get the hypo. I love the ghostly, opaque sort of look. Not to mention the bright orange! My fiance liked them the best compared to the mojaves and pastels and such too. She just didn't want an albino with the "scary" red eyes! :)
Talk about difficult though! I mean, all of these ball python morphs are beautiful in their own way. I understand why so many of you on this forum keep more than one.
Thanks once again for the comments. I'll be using the forum more if I have questions and such as time progresses. Six months or more of researching balls has prepared me for this new addition to the house. But that doesn't mean I won't have questions still. ;)

If you want one just as a pet that is really awesome to look at, I would go with a bumblebee. You can purchase a baby male for around 400 to 500, and those look great. Plus, later on down the line if you do decide to breed, you will already have a double gene animal, that looks great, and is an extremely popular mutation. I am also a huge fan of the mojave, if you are looking for just a single gene type of thing. Hope this helps, and welcome to BP.net!!!!
