Keeps trying to crawl out
I have a 3 month old bumble bee that keeps trying to climb out of the tank. She will pull herself up to the inside lip of the tank and eventually lose grip and fall down to the substrate. Anything I should be worried about?
Also I sometimes take the lid off of the tank and let her crawl around the edge, I started doing this after the kept trying to get out.

how long have you had her in that tank

My ball python constantly explores when she is hungry! she will climb to the top of the cage then go INVERTED just to explore further almost defying gravity. Eventually as you stated she will slide gently on the acrylic tank back down to her substrate. As she is eating healthy and her digest track is moving right along i am not to concerned. I would consider that behavior to be normal and she or he is just trying to check out their surroundings.

Re: Keeps trying to crawl out
That's a relief...thanks.

She's probably looking how to get out. I think it's a snake's favorite thing to do :)
If she keeps it up add a branch for her to crawl on.

I just got my bee today, placed her in her new tank and she did exactly what you said. For an hour she kept climbing and falling too.
I took him just moments ago, he wrapped himself around my wrist and has stayed put for like 20 minutes already. I am typing now with one hand as he is on my left wrist :-) will upload a photo..
I guess he was just cold from the plane ride..

Re: Keeps trying to crawl out
Hi,
I would pack the lip of the tank with rolled up newspaper so the snake cannot fit in there. ;)

The only thought I had was that her tank is in a high traffic area and maybe that was upsetting her. But I've since moved her tank to a quieter place.
Thanks for the input all, makes me feel much better :)

While roaming and other stress related behaviors can be common while they are acclimating to their new home, you should really be past that stage by now.
I would recommend checking your setup - temperature zones (hot spot, ambient, cool side), whether or not you are fulfilling her security needs, etc.
You stated that she is kept in a tank - I assume you mean glass tank? Are any of the four sides covered? How are you heating it? What type and how many hides does she have?
Rule out any husbandry issues before thinking this is normal behavior. She may be trying to wedge into that lip because either the temperature there is optimal or she feels secure there.

and mine likes to do the same thing by crawling all over the lips but he only seems to do that when he's hungry like the others said.

10 gal glass tank
Temp is at 88F
Ambient is around 78F
3 of the sides are covered with black construction paper, doesn't go all the way to the top though
Heating it with an under tank heat pad
1 cave hide
She ate a live mouse 1 week after getting her, doesn't seem too fond of f/t.

Re: Keeps trying to crawl out
your girl is definetly adjusting and exploring. two things to think about. 1, letting her crawl around the edge of her enclosure could promote this behavior. 2, if thats the case you would not be able to interpret the behavior as a food hunt or a desire to crawl around the tope of the cage. snakes have behavior and can certainly be conditioned in positive and negative ways. If she is handled or removed from her enclosure, move away from that area and when she is through exploring and doesn't get to crawl around the rim, she settle in. ezra

Thanks for the tip.
Do you guys think it's ok if I let her crawl around my computer table or carpet to explore?

she's hungry and out for the hunt, in the wild thay will find a nice dark rodent burrow to hang out in, however when they start to get hungry they will go from one burrow to another looking for food. this normally occurs at dusk and dawn. it's not uncommon to see your BP come out of it's hide a few days after feeding at dusk and explore. once you feed her, she will stay hidden

Ambient is on the low side. You have an animal that has a core temp that needs to be maintained higher than that.
What is the hot spot temp on top of the heating pad? Where is the hide located with respect to the hot spot? Is it on it, or is the hide on the cool side? Is the cave hide large or is it a tight fit for her?
Before ASSuming she's hunting or exploring, you need to make sure her basic thermoregulation and security needs are being met.
Once those to factors are sorted out, then you can start looking at other potential reasons she's climbing to the top of her cage and wedging herself in a small gap.

The hot spot above the pad is 88F. The hide, which is a bit big for her it's right on top of the hot spot.

Try giving her a smaller hide - tight fitting. Give her another hide on the cool side. Roaming and wedging into tight places is a sign that her security needs are not being met.
What are you shooting the temperature with?

A digital thermometer with a probe that is resting on the substrate under the hide

LOL! Same here! Even cooler, I have dreads and I can get my little guy to grab a hold of a bunch of them and use it as leverage to crawl around on the top of my head, still holding onto my dreads! My own personal hair ornament!

Re: Keeps trying to crawl out
Well I have a smaller hide.
Upped the temp of the heat pad to 90 and the ambient temp is around 80.
I've been gone for 2 days so she has been left alone and quiet the whole time.
At this point I feel that she's secure and happy and is just exploring the tank.
-
Substrate: Cypress
Warm side: 90F
Cool side: 80F
Current humidity: 53% (usually 57%)
I don't know if I'm overreacting or something is bugging her. I've had her for a month now.
Recently she has been really adamant about trying to crawl out of the tank.
She will sometimes fall on her water bowl and it seems like it hurts a bit but then she goes right back to climbing up.
She's flicking her tongue out a lot like she's hungry and looking for food.
She loves to be held so I don't know if she's just trying to get attention to be picked up.
Here are some pictures of my tank, I apologize about the picture quality it was from my cell.

Re: Keeps trying to crawl out
My lil lady does that too, especially when she's hungry. But even when she's not around 9pm she comes out and does that a lot. Nothing to worry about!

Re: Keeps trying to crawl out
how many times have you fed and how often? i by no means am a expert but my bp does not do that. he hides and keeps to himself. a bp that is inactive is a happy bp. why dont you give us a calendar of all the feedings you have done and what size feeder you are using. hunger may be the cause of it but a hungry bp is not a happy healthy bp in my eyes. mine likes to eat and sleep :D

Re: Keeps trying to crawl out
yep i would suggest feeding more often. i think most people on here recommend once a week for young ones. my take on that is no more than 7 days between feedings. my self i try to feed every fifth or sixth day. you had a couple big gaps between the first feedings so maybe just needs some time to fill its belly up.

I would love it if she ate more but she doesn't seem the least bit interested in food right now

Re: Keeps trying to crawl out
My bp started doing the same thing 10 days after I got her, turn out she was fed 1/3 her usual meal which last her 21 days and in exactly 10 days she was hungry. She's took 6 chick happily. In 28hrs she's only moved from her spot once to take a drink and went right back there.
