What I can I feed a 1 month old Burm, I have been feeding it a rat fuzzy twice a week (wed and sat) somehow I feel it can already take something bigger, should I feed it a chicken chick? Already?

You could go for just one proper sized rat (about as big around as the snake is) once a week. If you ask me there is no need to put them on chicks when you can get rodent feeders just as easily. Just opt for a bigger sized rat next time :)

How big is a 1 month old burm (grams and length)?

Are chicks more available than rodents in the Philippines?

Right now the rat supply I can find only has fuzzies (fresh out of pinky state)

There are lots of mice available. But there are lots of chicks available here.

Most of the burms being raised here are fed chicken heads, even the big ones.

I will get the length and weight later. I am guessing he is about 3 inches in diameter.

Okay, well if the chicks are what's easiest for you to find, then either go for one good size chick (at least around 3 inches in diameter, like your snake) per week or a couple smaller ones per week.

Is this chick too big? :( what happens if he still tries to swallow it? He did kill it http://tapatalk.com/mu/3a459714-799f-d77f.jpg

little tough to see constricted! Do you know the weight of the chick? My 567 gram BCI ate 60 gram chick with ease and left a weird bump (wings) but any lump was gone in 12hrs.

Feeding whats available or more available is the weigh to go. Chicks probably cost less too.
Nothing like eating chicken nuggets everyweek.

It's a little on the big side, but nothing your guy can't handle :) he'll be fine after eating it (they won't try to eat anything that is too big for them to take), but I'd either feed him one chick like that every 2 weeks, or try to get smaller chicks and feed one a week.

I'd wait 14 days, to be honest. That was still quite the big meal for him :P he's gorgeous, by the way.

Thanks Alexandra. The next feeding will be two weeks from today then :-)

that size chick is fine for him. Ive had to start a lot of anaconda babies off on chicks and try to wean them once they got some size to them and the chicks always look a little on the big side for the snakes. I hate feeding chicks here just because its so much harder to find a steady supply but if I had a steady supply I would love it. Anacondas love chickens and hardly ever refuse them so I would be in heaven

Thanks Denial. Do you think it would be wise to rotate his meals from Mice, Rat and chicks? Or should I just stick to one? :)
  • 08-19-2011, 07:29 PM

I like to rotate, that way they get different nutrition. If one is higher in fat or protein then the next feeding will have the other. I switch between rats and asf's.

You will know when he is hungry again, Im betting that will be in 7-10 days. I watched a chick digest rather quickly. Growing babies like to eat then after a year or so when meals are bigger and slower growing meals will be more spread out.

Not that they are even in the same boat, by I am noticing that one of mine liked to eat every 7 days and just recently now that he is closer to 2yrs old he is starting to go every 2wks.

I will keep the feeding sched under tight observation. Especially on the 7th day and 10th day mark.

Here is a video of the chick-feeding:

Nice video! Yea he might not be hungry for over a week :D

If I could make 1 recommendation....I know it's cool for everyone to watch a snake eat and could probably charge admission but you might want to consider feeding inside his cage to ease any stress after eating a meal moving him back. Handle him a few days after eating.

Thanks. Yes there were quite an audience. I keep this snake in our office where I stay most of the day 6 times a week :)

So does the feed the snake on a separate tank not apply to Burmese? :). I am also thinking of shifting him to pre-killed so when he grows big he will not get used to the "kill" process anymore. What do you think?

The dad is hand fed with chicken heads by the caretaker and no longer coils. I don't know if this is bad or good.

Im one that believes that feeding in the cage creates no cage aggression, others think so.

Even when I fed p/k or f/t they almost always constricted so I think it something that they will always do and it's in their nature.

Thanks for the suggestions, will keep this under observation and see if he gets stressed out or not, if he does, then will try to feed him in his tank. Right now he has a super huge tank, lol! Thats why I take him out to feed. In the future I have to convert this tank to side opening doors, right now it has top opening doors.

Must be nice to live in a place that you don't need any heaters!
That tank won't be super huge in a few years ;)
Mine are all fed in their 4 foot long cage and like to stalk their prey

What exactly is that on top of the tank?
  • 08-20-2011, 09:14 PM
    muzikfreakah
Believe me it is. The tropical weather in the Philippines is perfect for raising snakes. No need for heaters or misting to maintain humidity :)

The top of the tank is made of wood which opens and closes on two sides. There is also a lock and key for each door :). I got this tank for only $11 usd. It was an old used fish tank that I had modified with the wooden doors. The wood also has drilled holes on it for airflow.
