Our adult rack - picture heavy
I did not take pictures of each step, but I have a few pictures of the end results.
First, the rack from the front, 42qt tubs. A 5 piece shelf from walmart makes a 4 tub section, including tubs, costs about $85:

We cut the posts down so that each shelf sits tightly with each tub. We flipped the shelves upside down, so that the flat plastic surface works as a lid, and the bottom of the shelf (turns upside down) creates a little dip to fit heat cable flush with the bottoms of the tubs:

There are permanent screws in the back that stick out just far enough so that the lip of the tubs are stopped in the event that the snakes try to push out. There are removable pins in the front:

And screws to hold the pipes into the shelves, for easy transport and stability:

Whoops. Just a misprint. They are 41qt lol. They took hardly any time to build too!

Thanks guys :) boyfriend did most of the planning and building, but after watching him build one, we got the other ones up in no time. They seem to be liking it, and I'm liking it a lot more than the tubs with lids we were doing before.

Thank you so much for posting this!! :D I'm actually going to try and build something very similar soon, and I love the idea of flipping the shelves upside down!! I never would've thought of that :P Do you remember the brand/model of that shelving unit?? Because all of the walmarts around me only carry shelves that are around 34-36 inches long, and with the support posts the 41qts just don't fit :(

yeah id love to get the brand and model and where u bought it etc

I've already tossed the box for the shelves, but we are planning to build a couple more here shortly, and I'll be sure to post the info. Thed tubs definitely don't slide straight in, they go in one side and then we sort of pop the other side in to place, and the posts lock the corners in.

You can fit a 41qt tub in this one. A while back I was planning on using these to make racks but never did and now I kinda of regret it. Here's a youtube video to help you as well.:D

Oh alright, that makes sense then! I thought maybe the walmarts around me just didn't carry the same shelving unit, because at least from your pics it looks like they fit in there very nicely and can slide out. So the tubs do fit but you have to kind of put them in sideways first? Is it a pain to get them in and out as far as them getting stuck or anything? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just excited now since the only other unit I could find was a 42 inch one at Lowes for $60, so if I can make the $40 one work that would be awesome :D

I don't find it to be a pain. They sit tight enough when slightly open which is nice for letting girls climb up and feel for follicles. Biggest thing at first is not sloshing water bowls. The solution, btw is to put the water bowl side in first, set in water bowl, then pop heat cable side in second, lol.

Re: Our adult rack - picture heavy
So are your shelves 36 inches long? It looks like it from the pics but I just want to ask and make sure. I bought a unit from Lowes today that is supposedly the same size as the walmart one except it was a few dollars cheaper, but I got it home and the tubs will not fit at all :( Tried sideways first and there's just no way... I think maybe it has to do with where the support posts run through the shelf because the walmart ones are more offset... oh well, at least I didn't cut anything.

I'm told the shelves are 36.5 inches. It could very well be the post placement as well.
