breeding a young female

i like to breed my female mojave this year if possible. she was hatched in 7/2010
and is now 42'' and 950 grams does she stand a chance of breeding this year.

Usually people do not breed females till approx 1200-1500 grams and males over approx 800 grams. Perhaps someone can chime in with the exact reasoning, but I think it has something to do with the females having more of a chance of becoming egg bound or throwing a lot of slugs when they are on the small side.

You should have better results if you wait until its larger than it currently is, so wait until it hits 1500-1800 grams before breeding it.

Yeah the males can vary greatly. Ive read about instances were they bread at 375 grams but females its too risky. They cant handle the eggs, which end up becoming slugs. Un needed stress would be put on the female. More than likely she would only produce 2 eggs at that size. Id say the soonest you could breed her would be at 1200 grams. But thats just a min. Personally id wait till shes at least 1500.

As everyone has stayed it's better to wait. Personally I won't breed my females under 1300 grams and even then I may would be cautious.

I think the OP was asking if she stood a chance to get up to weight in time to breed this year? I could be wrong.

youhave quite a few months ahead of you to get her up to size. with proper feeding and rat supply you COULD put 100 grams a month on her. its best to wait. if you breed small and she slugs out you just lost months of potential weight she could have had for the following year. small snakes mean small eggs and small clutches.

You have time to get her up to size if she's a good eater. I personally think age makes a bigger difference than size. A two year old at around 12-1300 grams will probably give you four eggs. If she has good body mass, they will probably be healthy and average size and hatch no problem. The only thing is, at only two years old, she may not even go...just depends on if she is ready or not.

If you wait another year, and she puts on some good weight, now you're looking at 6 - 8 eggs...

I think the op was asking if it is possible. Last year I got 5 eggs from a 1200 gram girl on her second winter. This year I got 6 eggs from a 1600 gram girl on her second winter so yes it is possible. Some people won't breed em that young some do. Your call. I look at it as if they are off feed ill give it a shot.

My normal female was 1500 grams and on her second winter. She laid me 9 good eggs.

I have an early '10 that is almost 1400 grams. Was thinking of giving her a try for next season if she shows interest in the male and has some more weight on her.
