    What's wrong with my hides?
This past Sunday I picked up a nice proven breeder reduced pattern normal. In preparation I made her a hide and made my big girl Lily a new hide as well. Her's was getting a little small for her. I use tupperware containers painted with non-toxic acrylic that I let air dry for 2-3 days before I put them in. Well neither of them are using the hides. Lily used to use her other hide all the time, but she won't go in this new one.

They both just sit next to them, I thinking at this point I should just take them out to give them more floor space. I use packing paper substrate so if they really want to hide under something they can hide under that.

I just can't why they won't use them. They should fit snuggly into them. The only thing I can think of is they don't like the color pink.

Maybe lily just needs some time to get use to the new thing in her cage, and your new guy just needs to get use to his new cage.

Did you put lilys new hide in the same place as the old one?

Yeah, it's in the same spot. Last time I gave her new hides she went right into them though. I'll leave them in a little while longer and see if they actually go in them at any point.

Maybe they just need time. Or maybe pink is not her color. Ha!

It could be that the hole is to small for her. When you cut tub containers. the edges are really sharp and can cut your snake if they happen to rub their sides on them. Mostly when shedding comes around i usually burn the edges that i cut off so it is smooth when i glide my fingers over it Also, i think if you made it black she might like it more since black tends to make animals feel more secure.

anyways! I love your big new girl =]

I melted the edges with a lighter, I'm pretty sure they can get into them. Her hides were purple before, but I really don't know how well they can see color. None of my hides are painted black. I actually have a pair of yellow hides that one of my 2010s loves.

Also that's Lily, she's 1850 on empty. I can't wait to start breeding her. :D

This is my new girl Ella, she's 1650 empty (I'm really looking forward to fall). :D

I will try painting the hides a different color and see if that helps.

    Your girl is huge. :O

I don't have anything too exciting for males, but I plan on pairing Lily with my enchi (I'm really hoping for a female enchi from that pairing) and Ella will get my spider and spotnose. The people I got her from said she locked with their spider but they missed ovulation. I may pair my enchi with Ella too just to increase my chances at a female enchi, but he's a little on the small side (right around 400g) so I don't want to work him too hard.

She is huge. >.< and like a puppy dog. I think you should pair Ella with the enchi too. her head is really light and has more of blush to her =]
wait another month and he will be about 500+ grams. then you should be ready to rock

I have more colored paint than I do black paint. I'm going to try a darker color first.

    Pink Hides :O Blasphemy!!!!!!

They look Little small compare to size of presented Animal...

I know that general Rule is They should feet nice and Comfy but too tide ( I mean rolled like pretzel and no more space at all) is not good as well...
And entrance cold be a problem too...
My ball love launch at they prey from they hides and i really dont see it goes good from those ones... Is really hard to say about size of this hide from Pictures.

I've used medium RBI hides for my up to 1000g animals those are 10x7x2.25 inches...
Above 1000g I' using large now... and those are 13.25x9x3.5 inches

I don't know about my new one, but Lily generally prefers it if I just leave the rat in for her to eat when she wants. I use similar style hides for my little ones and they are able to shoot out of them no problem. My male spotnose actually ambushed me one day.

I've been thinking about buying some RBI hides and I guess now might be a good time to do it. Some of my 2010s are out growing their hides, but they also love to hide under the paper so it doesn't matter as much to them. :P

Re: What's wrong with my hides?
I had the same problem when I tried to give mine bigger hides. She was using her old one as a hat more or less, so I decided to make some bigger ones and she refused to use them for several weeks. She would poke her head inside of them but wouldn't lay inside for any extended period of time. Eventually she relented and now she seems to love them as much as her old ones.

They are such creatures of habit that she probably just needs more time to adjust to it. And painting it a darker color couldn't hurt either :P

When I use tupperware, I just leave it clear. They don't seen to notice the difference and I get to see them in there. :)

Hides for big snakes are a bit overrated. The majority of my snakes except the most finicky eaters don't have hides. A few rest under the paper but most of them curl up in the tub and do just great. Hides are much more important for small snakes IMO.
