Had An Interesting Feed Last Night
So, there was a point where it was assume snakes killed by suffocation. Recent years have introduced the idea that snakes can simply crush you to death before suffocation can occur. Basically increasing your blood pressure to a lethal limit.

Well, I think I witnessed that last night. I dropped a rat in with my biggest snake. He made the worst crap I have seen him make. He grabbed it by the butt and wrapped just the lower half of the rat's body. So the rat's head and upper body were free. Fortunately to angle was such that the rat could not bite. It flailed around with it's front feet and heat. It took a long time for it to die. For a while I thought it wasn't going to happen. But it finally did. I almost felt sorry for it.

I can only assume the rat died from the pressure in it's lower half since it obviously did not asphyxiate.

I do have video so if anyone is interested I can put it up so you can see.

Anyone seen something like that before.

I had one that fed like that quite often. I wonder if the egg he hatched out of got a little too much heat...:)

I have one how that I have to feed on bare plastic. On paper towels he manages to "gift wrap" his ratsicles.

Some of them aren't very bright, even by snake standards.

my girl did the exact same thing about 2 feedings ago...i held the rat's head back away from the snake & gave it the tip of my pen to chomp on. my girl threw another coil around the rat when she knew she wasnt killing it quick enough.
the most interesting feedings we've had were when the initial strike & coil landed both the snake & the rat IN a water dish with the rat's face submerged...whoo-wee i've never seen a rat fight so hard as one that's being drowned.
    poor little things. :weirdface

Well I've had some backwards feeding experiences but I always say... atleast they ate. One of my males has decided for the last 9 months that he can live on air and water alone. Not much weight loss, but this weekend I had it with him and moved him out of the snake room where some females are breeding and into his own private spare room. Hopefully now that he's away from the females, he will want to eat.

One of my Nelson's does the same with its pinky rats. He's never quite understood the concept of constricting it, like my Albino does, so he just pins the pinkies to the corner of the tub until the pressure eventually kills it. It's ridiculous. I'm just happy when he actually does decide to kill them before swallowing though. The majority of the time he'll swallow them live. Unfortunately, the breeder I get them from only sells live pinkies, but luckily they're only a day or two old so they can't do any damage.

I have seen that too, I felt really bad and considered breaking its neck while it was coiled with the snake. I finally rearranged the snake and he got a better hold. It was only a matter of seconds after that that the rat was dead. the whole process lasted nearly 5 min though :(

Yeah, it never fun watching a wrap take way too long.

I've had chester squeeze a rat so hard that brains (or something) pushed out the nose and eyes almost immediately, along with a lot of crunching noises. Gruesome.

ok todays feeding session takes the cake on interesting so far...my girl actually struck at ME instead! but thanks to my nervousness i was more alert & caught the flash of movement & was able to jerk away in the nick of time...
i had to check myself after that!

I had this happen before with a couple snakes ( even the pinning to the side of the tub). But the orst I had was one that seem to pop the eyes out ( like in total recall) and not once but like 3 times this snake did it. talk about nasty lol.

aww what a little fighter! my girl rolls more coils on the rat if its still fighting. she seems to pick up on when she's not doing a good enough job of the killing process.
fortunately i've never had a rat fight for that long. i've noticed when they just accept fate it goes alot quicker for them, but of course they never go down quiet right?

I've had balls make bad strikes before. I always supervise thier feedings so when they do I just give the rats a good thump on the head and its all over.

my ball hasn't done anything crazy, atleast not that i can remember. however my corn always likes to put on a show. usually he will take and roll the rat around the tank, as he is adding coils to the strangle hold.

however the one that sticks out most in my mind was a quick strike to the mid section of the rat. he then took and rolled it over so that the head was under water, and just held it there, till the rat stopped struggling. it was almost comical. he was just looking around waiting for him to stop breathing i guess. the bubbles finally stopped and he began working on the swallowing.

I noticed that a lot of young BPs and corns have trouble actually killing pinkies (rats or mice). I guess it's the size and awkward build that makes it hard for them to constrict? My corn got an extra gerbil pinky (I was trying my hardest to get a nonfeeder to eat) and it took SO long for it to die. Later he swallowed a live mouse pinky whole (as an adult, had a leftover pinky).

My worst feeding was with my female albino. She struck for her small rat so hard in the throat that she punctured one of its veins, then proceeded to constrict it and cover her face in blood. :weirdface She's a nutter! I have this morbid fascination hearing about others' strange feeds.

I gave my smaller girl her first rat fuzzy today, and it took her about 10+ minutes to kill it. I don't know if it's because she is used to f/t and this was live or because she had it like the op stated. My bigger girl instantly squeezed the poop out of her weaned rat:rofl:
