Royal Pedigrees, The Ball Python Registry, is now up and running. Sign up FREE!
Hey everyone. Here's a detailed list of all the snakes at my house. Feel free to tally them up and decide whether or not you'd like to come over and help yourself while I'm out.
I think I'll pass on this one.

I just wanted to let everyone know that Chuck Pritzel, the owner of the American Cornsnake Registry (ACR), has just launched Royal Pedigrees, the Ball Python Regristry, and ball python breeders are welcome to start signing up as breeders and start registering their snakes. I signed up yesterday and registered my ball pythons. It's definitely not perfect yet, but at this time it is totally FREE to register your animals. If it's like the ACR, it should always be free to sign up as a breeder, but I imagine that in the future there will be low fees involved for registering your animals once it is running more smoothly. Check it out at http://royalpedigrees.com/index.php .

Thanks for letting us know. I will be deleting your multiple other announcements throughout the forum on this. Only one needs to be posted.

It depends how you look at it. Since the registry features pictures of your individual snakes, it could also discourage people from stealing your snakes, since most of them have unique markings and people wouldn't want to be caught trying to sell one that looks exactly like the one you already have registered. I think that would be safer than the collection info that a lot of have in our forum signatures.

Some of these posts will be out of order as a result of me merging replies that were left on multiple other duplicate announcements of this registry into this thread.

People concerned with that sort of thievery can simply watermark their images. Next?

I posted on the other older threads, so that it would go directly to the people that had been wondering about a registry, since not everyone will see general announcements.

You could send them a PM with a link to this thread. :)

It sounds interesting, but I would think that many breeders already keep detailed logs of their animals and offspring and there is no need for a third party to manage your notes. The site doesn't allow for watermarked photos to be uploaded there, either, so I see this as a means for some people to easily steal photos as well.
Thanks for the link and info but I won't be joining.

I see where this is headed.... No thanks.

I really don't see any benefit or point to a registry. There are tons of programs (example degei) that breeders use to track there animals that work just fine. Why would I want to register my animals with someone???????

Where is it headed? I'm just trying to do a favor by announcing that it's available now. His corn snake registry has been very successful with over 800 breeders registered the last time I checked. Whether you choose to register individual animals or not, signing up as a breeder is a simple and free way to get your name out there, so that people looking to purchase ball pythons can find you more easily. What's the harm in that?
-
Wouldn't it be easier to get your name out there by joining forums like this one? I mean, here we get to know one another and share information. I know that I've directed people to other breeders that I've met here and on Fauna. No need for a registry to do that.
This registry idea just sounds like it would be far too problematic. That may be why there are only 800 corn snake breeders registered on the other registry you mentioned.

800+ doesn't seem like a low number to me, and there are many very well-known top corn breeders on that list. There are lots of good ways to network. Personally I discovered the corn snake registry a long time before I knew about the corn snake forums. I have been an active member on both corn forums for years now and have NEVER heard anyone complain of the registry being problematic in any way. It' very well received in the corn snake community and is a very useful tool.

LOL I just realized that I did register with ACR a few years ago. I've never used their services, though. Looking through the list, I get the impression that not many others have made use of it or become fully registered, either. Many of those that have the little 'R' icon next to their name have very vague profiles with no contact information or added animals (like mine). I consider 800 a low figure for worldwide corn snake breeders but the actual figure of active registered users is likely much lower still.

I don't really understand why this is evoking such a negative reaction. :/ It seems pretty harmless to me. Lots of users on this forum list what snakes they have in their profile or in their signature (myself included), and no one's ever suggested that it's dangerous to put that information out there. I don't see how a registry would encourage a thief to try to steal from me any more than listing my snakes anywhere else would. It seems fairly benign to me.

Thank you! Having been registered on the corn snake forum for several years, I can tell you that it's been totally harmless and really pretty helpful sometimes. I do have a number of high-end corns registered.... but no one has ever tried to rob me. You are not required to list your street address or even your phone number. I don't, but I probably would if I had an actual pet shop. I just list an email address and a link to my website.
This is how the American Cornsnake Registry (ACR) has been useful to me:
1. I have used the registry list to help me locate other corn breeders when I am shopping for something specific. It's a nice directory with most of the top breeders listed. The breeders with website links provided are of course the easiest ones to shop with.
2. As a reptile business owner, I do get a number of inquiries from international shoppers (and I don't ship snakes internationally) as well as people who are not comfortable with having snakes shipped. The ACR world map is very handy for referring them to corn breeders closer to them. I have also had local customers that have found me because of that map.
3. Customers often like to see pictures of the parents of the baby snakes they are purchasing, and it's very handy to give them the parents' ACR numbers, so they can take a look online, and then I don't have to take new ones or try to dig up old pictures of snakes I may have sold. Last year I had a fatal hard drive crash and lost all of my snake pictures. It was really nice that I had the ACR pictures online as a back-up.
4. With all the recessive genes involved with corn snake breeding, the ACR is a great place to record everything your individual snakes are het for or any other genetic information you might otherwise forget over time.

IMHO this seems a bit ridiculous. But I guess that's me....

Being a very small time breeder I would find no use for this. I also hate corns just FYI. I would rather build my breeding reputation by doing good business with people. I have a local breeder that I have bought 5 snakes from because he is always taking care of me. When he doesn't have what im looking for I ask him if he knows anyone. If he doesn't I come on here. I'm not saying its a bad idea just personally would never use it.

I watched one registry become elitit and tell me and a few other breeders that we where no longer welcome. that was years ago, and the registry still bad mouths us. Id rather not be involved in that again :S
