Hatchling with hard umbilicus area

This little girl hatched out the end of June, weighing in at 35g, only absorbed about 80% of her yolk, and her umbilicus area was hardened. The rest of the clutch shed and has taken multiple meals.

She didn't have her initial shed, so she was hanging in the incubator solo, as of last night still no shed, I offered a asf crawler, several times, she wanted nothing to do with it.
I weighed her today and her weight is 29g, so I assist fed her the crawler.

Has anyone else run across this umbilical issue?
If so, did the issue resolve itself?

I just hope she doesn't have any problems digesting, but I guess time will tell.

gave her an asf crawler last night, she took it no problems.
She still has not shed, or pooped so still being kept in a moist/humid environment.

***thinking that now that she has had a couple meals, and will eat on her own, to maybe keep her on a 6-7 day feed schedule til I know everything is fuctioning well.

With that hardened yolk, you are gonna have to help her pass it, it will not pass on its own.

You can manually work it down with your thumb, and then out the vent. Only SOME of these hardened yolk babies will live, many will not. I have seen the vent split right up the belly during the pass as well. It is not a fun or exciting process.

You see this more often in farm hatched babies that are brought in, not so much in u.s.c.b. babies. Best of luck.

She finally had her first shed tonight 40 days after hatching :), she is good little eater, only giving her 4-6g asf's, until she poops, which she hasn't, though is producing urates/urine.

Her umbilicus area still feels hard.

Her weight is up from 29g to 42g, but until she poos :rolleyes:. Here she is all shed and pretty, looks like a different snake lol

As Robyn stated, I would definitely palpate out the hardened yolk. I have never seen one pass it on it's own. Be very slow with it, and you shouldn't have a problem. I have done this numerous times in the past, and have only ever lost one baby. I have not seen the belly splitting like RObyn described, but I definitely believe it is possible.

I would get the yolk out as soon as possible though, as if it starts to rot in the gut, you stand a chance of it becoming septic.

This poor lil girl has been through alot in her short days on this earth, she escaped 8/9, was found 8/10, and continued to take small 4-6g asf's.

She went poo last night :banana: and her weight now is a meager 48g, but that is a big improvement from her 29g :).

She's a lil engine that could, I look for her to catch up with the rest of her clutch mates that are each over 100+g

Not any more, she has pooped several times, she only has issues with shedding:(, she's over 60g now :)

Not hard anymore? That's good.

I just had a conversation with my vet about this--- usually he operates on the hatcling to take if it won't palpate out, because otherwise they most often die from it. He got a free albino that way, because it wasn't worth the money to the breeder to save it.

the others range in size from 118-159g, now that she is in the clear she'll catch up to them in no time.
She is in the middle of a horrible shed right now, will post pics when she's pretty again :)
