Snake rack setup?

When you set up a snake rack with plastic tubs, do you still have a warm and cool side? Also, what size UTH for a 16 Qt tub, and do you need a thermostat/rheostat to control it? Thanks. :snake:

With snake racks you are going to want a thermostat, I use Flexwatt heat tape with a herpstat on my rack. I doubt anyone here would ever recommend you use a rheostat in a rack.

As for the warm side and the cool side, you still have those. I use the 11" Flexwatt on my rack which holds rubbermaid 41qt tubs so about 1/3 of my tub is over the heat tape. So far this setup has been working for me and my snakes.

yes you need a t stat to control the heating element.Typically racks are heated with a strip(s) of heat tape either belly heat or back heat

I have 2 3-inch heat tapes running under the plastic tub close to one end of the long side. They're separated by about 1" of space so it's kinda like 7 inches of heat tape underneath 1/4 of the 28" long tub.

I just reread what I wrote above and don't know if that made any sense. Hah!


I use a pulse thermostat. Yeah, I wouldn't trust a rheostat on a rack.

i would never recommend putting the thermostat probe in a tub. Find the middle shelf on the rack and tape the probe on top of the heat tape. use a temp gun to adjust the thermostat as needed and always remember it takes time for the tubs to warm up to where you want them to so have the rack\tubs all set up for a few days before putting snakes in this way you can make all necessary adjustments before the snake is in.

ok i take that back dont put it inside tub mount on the tape itself my bad but put it on the middle shelf

As noted flexwatt is typical for racks, it was not designed to be used with out a thermostat. It is only rated for use up to 85ºC it will go much higher than this. The middle placement is the typical way if you are building a rack plan a channel for the probe it takes up some space.

I use a rheostat.... nothing wrong at all..... but yea, flexwatt and a rheostat and your fine.
