Nasty Food!
What's the absolute worst thing you've ever eaten? For me, it was something called lutefisk, which is a kind of Swedish or Norwegian fish dish that I had to eat to make a friend's grandmother happy. It's like some kind of fish that has been left to rot until it turned into jelly - absolutely appalling, nauseating stanky nastiness! :puke2:
-
Ummm, I love most foods! I don't really know what the worst thing I've eaten is, but my sister definitely knows.
One day we were in the kitchen and I was doing whatever, so I wasn't paying attention to her. All of a sudden she freaks out! Apparently she thought that a Bouillon cube was a piece of chocolate or caramel, so she popped it in her mouth and bit down!
It was one of the funniest things I have ever witnessed!

I can see how she mistook them, but it must have been HORRIBLE! Hahaha, I'm giggling just thinking about it.
The only thing that has ever made me gag while eating it was this plain, nasty, globby oatmeal that my boyfriend's father offered me early on in our relationship, when I was visiting his parents. I almost threw up many times.
I guess that's all I got.
-
Friskies sliced beef in gravy cat food, my nephew (he's 1 year younger than me) dared me too. I threw up immediately. He laughed. I kicked his butt, fond childhood memories.

Worst thing I ever ate was a freshwater eel my mother caught on a fishing trip on the Quivre River here in Missouri when I was 8 or 9.
She skinned it, breaded it and fried it with the fish. I put one piece in my mouth. It was like eating a large spoonful of warm Crisco shortening. I spit it out so hard it splattered the kitchen wall and I had to clean it up. :puke:

Eels are tasty but need to prepared right first... They need to be bleed out first... then or smoked or dusted with Flour and pan fried...
The worse Thing I ever eaten... was earthworms and night crawlers with cheap sweet red wine on fishing trip... Of course that was form of daring bet when i was young and stupid but still Yuuuuck :puke2:

Re: Nasty Food!
Worms??!!! :O Dude - seriously? Just how much wine did it take before this sounded like a good idea? That is just too funny!

I've suffered through lutefisk too. My father is from Norway and yeah... yuck. My mom's family is from Poland and family get-togethers consist of waaaaay to many cabbage dishes. When one grows up eating blood sausage and pudding, and all kinds of creepy sea food its hard to be grossed out. That being said...
Chunky peanut-butter!
I can't eat it. Its a texture thing. :P

Re: Nasty Food!
When I was in high school my mom cooked up a porcupine (her roadkill) and told us all it was "steaks" we were having..... until we were done and she told us the truth! Nastiest "steak" I ever ate!

I have to say, the worst thing I ever ate was home-made blood pudding. Just... agh! :puke2: I guess it didn't help that I had to help out in making it too, but still. That's just nasty!

There's also this dish called "Galareta" that my Polish mother likes to eat, and when I see it in the fridge (when I'm at her house) I can't help but gag.
It's like, globby gelatine nastiness mixed with chunks of meat and veggies it's just a nightmare.
:tears:
-
I eat everything EVERYTHING . ..
Duck fetuses, kidneys, liver, stomach, intestines, brains, eel, rat, muskrat, beaver, heart, feet, tails, duck tongues, pork knuckles, sea urchin, sea cucumber. . . EVERYTHING
But I will NOT touch grapefruit. It is DISGUSTING and tastes like a citrus scented FART.

I have eaten tons of odd stuff, grab bag of bugs (pickled earthworms) tripe and brains. Some I might eat again some not so much. The absolute worst was when I was in university my roommate was an Inuit guy. His dad came to visit with delicacys I'd have nightmares. The worst I actually tried was seal meat seasoned with Ptarmigan droppings. They told me strong tasting... eye watering, puke making, I say. The next time he came he brought rotten Ptarmigan that is eaten raw. I never tried it, I left.

Why have the Inuit people not taken over the world? They must be the mightiest, hardiest people on earth!
-
1st was -vallute - duck fetus hard boiled still in the egg
2nd was - fried skate wing- it smell like boiled urin, and I made the mistake of tasting it anyway.
-
The Inuit would take over the world if there were more of them. Joey could fix anything with junk.

Re: Nasty Food!
Other than Coconut and Peanut Butter......Vegimite is about the worse....I can eat just about anything, but the Vegimite I got from a friend from Melbourne, ......Well, didn't hang around very long!!
-
The worse food I've eaten was raw squid at the japanese market. Impossible to chew and the texture of old beef jerkey (except it was slimy) :puke2:
-
Re: Nasty Food!
the worst thing i ever ate has to go to sushi
-
Sushi rocks! My worst would be liver.
-
Worst here was when we moved into a crappy old apartment complex and my mom found a rusty old can of beef in the basement. It had a white label, an outline of a cow, and the word "BEEF" in all caps below it. She brought it up and was excited about it, and we thought she was kidding. When we came home from school a couple days later, she had made hamburger helper. I tasted it and realized what she used. My sister didn't. She ate a plate full, then told my mom it tasted funny and was really stringy. My mom said, "That's because I used the beef I found in the basement!" Needless to say, she was pissed. :hungry:
It's not really the taste, but the idea of it more than anything. That can was years and years old.
-
I have to agree with the raw squid that has to be the worst. I compared the texture to chewing on an old tire innertube with a horrible fishy taste to go with it.
The 2nd worst was a sword fish caserole I tried. I am just not much for strong fishy tastes.
-
You thought swordfish tasted like fish?! Maybe it was because of what it was in. Other fish in it maybe? Swordfish steaks are an incredibly firm white meat that (in my opinion) does not taste like fish at all.
Anyway. My nastiest food ever tried was liver. I like a lot of things but I just can't stomach the taste of liver. I tried. Can't do it. Yuck.
-
My gran fed me sheeps liver once, by telling me it was a piece of steak, I took one bite and back it cam, straight onto the kitchen table...she was disssapoint, lol!
Another thing I can't stand the thought of is Tripe...Just the smell makes me run a mile, and when you see it at the butcher, damn that stuff is terrible, especially the Black Tripe that wasn't cleaned yet.
But people over here eat crazy stuff, Mopane Worms, Sheep/Pig Head, and then of course, there are certain people that work at Game Reserves that find it funny to get the tourists to eat Green Eggs, or Black Eggs, depends on what game lodge you visit. These little gems are chicken eggs, that are put under a pile of Manure(Poop), and left for a certain time period. When you crack them open, the yolk is black. I believe they are boiled first, before being put under the poop. The game guides/Professional Hunters think they are some sort of delicacy!!!

Whoever gave you the skate butchered it wrong then. You have to kill the skate as soon as you catch it, or like you said, it will smell and taste like piss.
I've caught and butchered my own fresh skate, and if you put it on ice for about 10 minutes live, then stab it in the brain and immediately filet it, it tastes amazing. It's got loads of texture, and way better tasting than plain ole fish!
-
Re: Nasty Food!
That was my only experience with sword fish and it was in a caserole at a buffet so it could be I jumped to conclusions. Now you have me wanting to try swordfish steaks :)

Have you had shark steaks? Swordfish steaks are very similar. They are great grilled with lemon and garlic. Since it is a fish eating fish, that swims in cold saltwater, they shouldn't have a dirty or fishy flavor. They must have put some other fish in that dish or put other parts of the swordfish that you wouldn't normally eat in it.
You really only want the fillets. Try it sometime. Cook it like you would shark or tuna steaks on the grill. Sear and blacken both sides a few minutes but don't over do it and dry it out. mmmmmm :)
-
There is a definite trick to preparing shark and skate, and starts from when you catch it. Because sharks and skates have a lot of ammonia in their system you need to get this out, or it can smell like pee, and it's also not great for you. Likewise with a shark, they have mercury in their belly meat, so this should be discarded.
The best thing to do, is when you catch a shark and decide to eat it, you need to bleed it out, to get rid of the ammonia and the mercury. The best thing to do is to make a cut near the tail and start the bleeding, then bury it in the beach sand so that the head points up and the tail down, that way it will bleed out nicely.
When you fillet it, take only the big triangle shaped fillets of it's back, they look like a big piece of pork neck or pork fillet, and they run down it's back and sides, discard the belly.
When you get them home, if you want them to be extra tender and odor free, soak them over night in milk. This will neutralize any remaining amonia smell. The flesh of a Black Tip or a small grey shark makes great eating. Cut them up into steaks, season nicely and grill them, you'll find normal fish to be very boring.
Same with skate wings, bleed the skate out, skin them, soak over night in milk, spice them, and then you can pan fry them or even bake them, they taste amazing!!! A plus point on sharks and skates is that they are a bit easier to skin than fish, especially sharks that have a tough skin!!
-
Re: Nasty Food!
Oh god.. just reading about this stuff makes me want to barf..ugh.. :puke2:
-
Shark and skate poorly prepared are nasty but well prepared are quite good. Delicate flavour. Swordfish is not fishy in my experience, my dad always said fish that tastes or smells fishy is old. I am quite fussy with fish growing up in a fishing community anything 8 hours out of the water is old.
-
Damned This tread makes me hungry now :rofl::rofl:
When I was living in Florida we was catching Atlantic Sharp Nose sharks or big (3-4 feet) Bone Head
When You bleed them and prepare with garlic, butter and lemon pepper (Lawrys is the best) they awesome...
But what we did too... was cutting meat in to thin strips.. dust it in spiced Cajun frying mix and deep fried that stuff..
As hot beer snack never had anything better :gj:
Uhhh I believe I'm going to the fish store today and gonna make some shark teriyaki for a dinner :P
-
Of the things I've tried, i have a really hard time with organ meat (hearts, livers, brains, tongues) its a texture thing. :/
-
There is a Thai candy that is made with processed fat, cane sugar and ginger. My neighbor when i was young was Thai and she gave us some. Think about eating a room temp. piece of steak fat covered in sand and ginger.. MMMM..
-
I ate Caviar before. After seeing it in movies about rich people i was expecting it to be great.
It tasted horrible. Maybe not the worst thing i have eaten but its up there.
