This really eats my lunch! (If it doesn't eat yours too, you're not human!)
Baby ball at a local pet store. We removed its bad shed (still a piece left in the pic). Poor thing was covered in mites, emaciated, an obvious back injury and an infected eye. After we peeled off the bad shed we alerted the owner to the snakes problems. When we told her about its eye she starts scraping its eye with her dirty fingernails! What the...???

How can anyone see this as acceptable? If she didn't know we had the ball out I would have loaded my pockets with whatever animals I could fit in there!

That is so awful! Would reporting them for abuse do any good?

This is why I say some people should never be allowed to have pets, let alone reptiles! It's outrageous that this same pet store will offer advice and sell animals to people, when their husbandry is clearly on the same level as toilet water!!!

I've had words with pet shops over here about the state of their dogs/cats, and on several occasions its come close to blows, thankfully not all pet stores here keep reptiles, and amongst those that do, I personally haven't encountered seriously deficient husbandry, but I'm sure it does happen...heaven help them when I see them, because I make noise when I need to!

Unfortunately, no. Many have tried, myself included. Everytime I've been told to go fornicate myself. I haven't even been able to get support from PeTA or HSUS, either. But I guess this isn't an issue of chanting outside of a KFC or burning down a ski lodge because they have elk heads on the wall. This is REAL animal abuse, so they don't seem interested.

I wish I could afford to go to jail!

I wouldn't even bother with PETA, they spend their time trying ban fishing and hunting, and even reptile keeping because it's easy to go after soft targets, and yet I haven't seen them do one thing to help the Rhino poaching problem we have here.

I know that a few years ago a pet shop over here got closed down because someone reported them to the SPCA and they got inspected and closed. Do you guys have the SPCA in the US?

First, the worst thing that you can do is contact PETA and HSUS - especially since they want to take away your ability to even keep snakes.

Secondly, do you spend money for ANYTHING at this petstore? Bedding, feeders?

We have SPCA. They won't help. They were one of the first people I contacted about this place. I've made other posts about animals in thier care on here too. I forget where I posted it, so its not like this is one time occurance. I hate PeTA and HSUS, but no one else gives a crap, so I tried them too. Nothing.

Absolutely not! If we need anything pet related, we spend the extra money and go to Pet Co. Not my favorite place to shop, but our Pet Co is actually pretty decent, just pricey. For the most part we are pretty self reliant. We breed our own feeders and build our own cages. About the only thing we buy on a regular basis is bedding from Wal-Mart.

The only reason we go in this place is to walk around and collect evidence and it fuels us to better ourselves in every aspect of our husbandry. We may not have big, fancy name brand racks, but none of our animals have suffered like this and never will!

They do not breed thier own snakes. She orders them from a breeder online. I saw them when she first got them a couple months ago and they looked like normal hatchlings. This is NOT a birth defect! This is an injury and malnourishment! This happens all over the store to every animal they have. You should have seen the African gray parrot that ripped all its feathers out from stress or the dead animals that are left in cages to slowly rot away or be eaten by other animals or the snakes that have been left with rats in thier cages for a week and had thier tails chewed off. Its a horror show.

Wish someone knew the breeder. If I were a breeder I wouldn't want my babies to go there. It's sad.

    That is absolutely horrible!

I say, post the name and location and owners names, the pictures that you have of their animals and the stories that you have, on every BP forum that you can find.

Also, report them to the health department. If they have dead animals in cages with other live animals, sounds like a health issue to me.

As horrible as it is, the OP is right, all of the organizations who are supposed to care about this kind of stuff are busy leading crusades for publicity. PETA doesn't think that we should keep animals and that they are better off dead than dependent on humans, forget for human consumption. Kill them and waste their lives rather than use them for clothing or food. The ASPCA has declared war on NYC carriage horses because it is cruel and they are stressed and breathing fumes from cars, leaving me to wonder how if happy, sound, well fed horses are being abused simply because of their proximity to vehicles, social services hasn't jailed parents for bringing their kids to the city or pushing a strolled across the street right at exhaust level. It's okay to keep a border collie in a one bedroom apartment where is slowly goes crazy and ends up being put down, but it is not okay to use animals which were bred for labor for the work they want and need in order to be happy and healthy.

/end rant. Apologies. I truly wish this kind of horror was limited in some way, but the truth is that people are purposefully and firmly ignorant of correct husbandry and allow press and publicity to fuel and spread their ignorance.
