    Hi,

There are a few ways of doing it.

You can see pictures of the rod method in this first post in this thread.

And you can see another method in this thread ( I even put up a pic :P ).

Drill a hole through the rod and mount something on the rack to run a lock through

    Hi,

Or use a rotating hasp and padlock.

But the above idea locks all the shelves with one or two padlocks so I would go with that.

Just remember any adult will be able to find a way around these things if they have time and tools.

The best security is not to have anyone you don't trust within a country mile of them.

If this is just a lock it to keep friends and family out. then the Rod with a small pad lock through it will stop that.

For theft, keep int mind if rack is wood nothing will stop a person from ripping the rods right off or anything for that matter screwed to the wood.

I had the same idea with the padlock. And I'm not trying to be nosy, but a little more information about your situation and what you're specifically worried about might help us come up with some better ideas for you.....

well a few days ago some one broke into my garage and took nothing. in there i have an old rack and on top i had an 16 quart tub this tub was moved next to the door that leads to the garage to kitchen. i was thinking that they were going to use it to put my snakes in.about 6 months ago some one here stole my cousins ball morphs who lives like 10 min from me. when this happened he moved his remaning normals to a safe place then two weeks later he saw that some one broke in again i guess to finish what they started. and in this same day i saw that some one left the door open that leads from the front to my back yard and saw marks on my garage door but they did not get in. from that day i lock every door every window and then this happened. now i know they if they come in they wont be thinking i have locks on my racks and hopefully leave. and this will gave me time to move them. they are really dumb and leave a big mess its really easy to see if they came. like i guess they did not expect for the garage door that leads to the kitchen to be closed so they left. and im also planning in getting a security system just in case but this wont be for a while.

Sounds like you need a different place to live and/or a large dog, preferably something angry looking, like a rottweiler. Have you contacted the police about this? I'd imagine that even if they just sent a car through your neighborhood a little more frequently than usual, it might help.

I used zip ties to connect dog chain to each area so I could lock it with a pad lock to keep my kids from pulling the drawers open and letting the snakes out. I have the animal plastic economy rack and I didn't have to actually damage the rack at all to do it. However I did also drill holes in my DIY rack to do the same thing to.

Here are pictures of it. I like that I can unlock one tub at a time without space for a rod.

Don't waste your money on a rottweiler unless you want another food/vet bill to keep up with. I'd just invest in a 12 gauge if you legitimately have someone breaking into your place.... not sure where you live but in Texas if someone breaks into your place you have the right to make that the last thing they ever did...

I would get an alarm system.
Your cousin was robbed of his snakes, you apparently had an attampted break in? The person or persons doing this knows you, they could be a friend of a friend, or aquaintance of a friend.

You could padlock or keylock your bedroom door, if that's where you keep them.

But as stated before, these are only deterants, if someone wants in, they will get in. Just don't make it easy for them.

I have a security camera pointed at my racks that I can check On my cell.
I'm home most of the time but I work at night so when I leave the racks have a steel rod that goes all the way through the racks and padlocks. Works to keep the snakes in and anyone else out. I also have a lovely am staff Named Zeus that knows noone should be in the house. He's stopped an intruder before so he knows what mom likes. I like to think that if someone gets in they have quite a few deterrents to get through before being able to leave with my kids pretty much. And if That should ever happen I hope I'd see it in time and I hope my pup rips them a new one.

You would be better off securing the room they're in and investing in a monitored security system with a loud siren.

this is what im thinking of doing im going to put a steel rod through my snake rack put a metal bars on the window the room my snakes are in.and get two locks to put on the door. the thing is that im only 19 and will take me some time to get the security system. and aslo i know its none of my freinds like 99% of my freinds dont even know i have snakes lol. im thinking this guys for some reason figures out where i live but im not going down easy.

Because he was probably trying to break into your house. Sorry to hear , but as far as things like the dog chain idea, good for children , but if someone wants to stael something your not going to stop them with locks or chains (they can easily be cut with bolt cutters. Invest in An alarm system like ADT and make sure your yard is well lit. Hope you catch them in the act, I like the idea of a shotgun as well but that's just me.

With time any thief will be able to get into your snakes, get through a secure door, or just shoulder through the sheet rock. The best thing to do is limit their time and make the chance of getting caught too risky to stay there.

You could always Set up an alarm system that sets off a speaker with a recording of a large angry dog barking.
Get some "Beware of dog" signs for the house...and let a friend's dog leave some presents in the yard...leading people to believe you have a large, angry dog.
