Lesser NOOOOOO!! Help?

So yesterday i picked up a lesser male that use to be around 500 grams.. Its my friends and he has given up all hope on him.. He was treated for an RI about a month and a half ago which i was told never fully went away. And To top it all off he hasnt eaten since last winter since he bred for the first time. He is now in the low 300 gram range. My 66 het clown looks way bigger than he does and last time i weighed her she was 396 grams..

He is really skinny.. I guess he got him to eat once but from assist feeding him.

So Basically He is a rescue cause my friend tried what he could to get him back to health but all attempts failed.. Oh and did i mention he still has an RI?:tears:

I talked to a vet and all i can do until friday is Up his temps and let him be. Friday is the day i will be taking him to the vet. My friends treat.


ANy suggestions on what i should do?

I'm going to sound like a broken record, but you could try African Soft fur rats.
I hear they are awesome for getting off-feed snakes to eat.

I was thinking about that.. I tried to poke a rat to make it bleed but he showed no interest.. And i was gonna go buy a mouse as well.. But the only thing is ASF r illegal in Cali.. Unluss u buy them frozen..

Make sure to pay the extra toget a culture done to try and get the RI treated with the most effective treatment they have.

You probably already know this, but practice STRICT quarantine. I would keep this snake in a different room and not even handle on the same day as of now.

Sometimes persistent RI can hide underlying problems you don't want to introduce to the rest of your collection.

yes I only Have two other snake right now that r out on breeder loan for a while so i dont have to worry about spreading it.. and Either way he is still in his own room..

I think after he gets on some meds and feels better, he should eat for you.

He use to be a big PLUMP boy.. I guess I just got use to seeing him that way and now seeing his backbone stick out so far frightens me

Yep, he's not nearly as far gone as I feared when I started reading. You can relax and concentrate on getting him treated for the RI. Remember that generally when they're on antibiotics, they won't eat.

If you have a experianced reptile vet, you can ask that he tube feed some of that slurry stuff while he's in for the exam. If the vet thinks it's okay, that could help a little bit while he's on more antibiotics for the RI(or whatever he's diagnosed with).

Good luck. Also, could you post what enclosure you've got him in? Maybe folks can suggest changes specifically for a stressed ill snake to make it better, even though you seem to be a knowledgable keeper? There's a lot of tricks and tips out there.

DONT let the vet just give him a broad spectrum anti-biotic. pay extra for the culture and find out exactly what strain of infection you are dealing with. there are strains out their that baytril will work on but other's baytril wont touch. increase the heat, increase humidity lots of hides and leave him alone. dont attempt to feed, if hes sick he wont eat anyway. most vets will just say here is some baytril....im telling you DONT LET THE VET PRESCRIBE MEDICINE WITH OUT A CULTURE. YOUR SNAKE WILL THANK ME.

I have heard that keeping the temps slightly elevated can help them get over ri quicker. Beautiful snake btw. Hope he pulls through.

And as far as his enclosure he was kept in a 10 gallon with one hide and water bowl and an UTH..

Right now i have him in a 12qt tub on 4inch flexwatt kept at 96 degrees on aspen bedding which i will be switching out to either newspaper or paper towels. Humidity is an 65% to help get off some eyecaps and i think i am gonna up it a lil. No hide and i will be place a waterbowl in there with him later today.

And so far he even refused and ASF but i figured it was because of the RI.
