anyone else afraid of needles?
i got nearly 10 tattoos ans im am scared to death of needles..whenever i go to the doctor and a shot is in order they always point out that i have so many tattoos how could i be afraid of needles..its not the same..it just isn't.
i think i need a filling redone on one of my back teeth and that means a shot right?..when i first got it done i remember the dentist pulling out a bigg a$$ needle and me walking out..only to be scolded and sent back by my mom :(
you'd think at 28 years old i would be over this..but im not...i cant even watch other people get shots..tattoos are not the same
-
I can't do shots or tattoos. It freaks me out just to think about a needle.
-
I'm the same way. I LOVE tattoos and piercings. But am terrified when I have to go to the dr and get a shot.
-
Re: anyone else afraid of needles?
I'm very afraid of needles. The weird thing is, I work at an animal hospital and work with needles all the time. With animals it doesn't bother me at all, but when it comes to myself or other people, needles freak me out.

I dont mind needles.
(Ive had ALOT of dental work)
and I have a tattoo.
but you have a vaild point, tattoos and needles ARE NOT the same.
its differant context of the use of the needle. I dont know..but its just differant.

Not scared of them, just hate 'em. Had emergency surgery at the beginning of this month & woke up with 3 IV's in me + getting blood drawn every 2 hours after that, which required YET ANOTHER freakin' needle. WITH THE OTHER THREE STILL IN. :angered:
Tattoos don't bother me so much...anything attached to a syringe, IV, or anything along those lines - EL SUCKO.
And just to clarify further, it's really only when I'm getting stuck with them that I hate them. I can GIVE shots & start IV's like nobody's business. Come at me with those things & it's on like Donkey Kong! Well, at the very least you'll learn some very interesting & colorful new phrases.
Have I mentioned I HATE needles?
K~

Yes I'm terrified of needles!
I had to get 3 deep cavities filled a couple days ago, on the same side, in the lower right quadrant, and the dentist jabbed 2 needles into my mouth, both stayed in for 20 seconds each. I almost cried... maybe I would have if there weren't needles jabbing my mouth.
It hurt so bad :(.
-
I could care less. It doesn't hurt. It's totally a mental thing, just like most people's fear of snakes.
Regards,
B

Re: anyone else afraid of needles?
[raises hand slowly]
i.i.i..h-h-hate needles too!
especially at the dentist...background story-
back when i was 16 getting all 4 wisdom teeth pulled, the dentist...may he burn in hell...gave me several shots in my gums around all 4 of the teeth but wasnt paying attention to what he was doing and the needle, being like 6 inches long was actually going all the way through and into my tongue a couple times and then he didnt wait for the medicine to take effect before beginning. at one point he was using something like a crowbar to force the teeth out! i could HEAR the nerves ripping! i was screaming & crying hysterically but couldnt say anything cuz my mouth was being kept open by that opener thingy. the dentist didnt stop either and was telling me to relax. i think i actually passed out a few times from the trauma of the whole ordeal. that is the reason for my extreme fear of dentists to this very day, 14 yrs later. i bawled like a baby the last time i had to have fillings.
just to have 2 absessed teeth extracted last year they had to gas me then give me an I.V general anesthetic to put me completely under...& that wasnt even done until it got to the point i couldnt eat anymore & was completely bedridden with the pain & got put on antibiotics for the infection and darvacet for the pain...
i have to get my blood drawn 1-2 x's p/ yr to check my thyroid levels and i have rolly veins.
when i was having my youngest daughter in april it took 2 nurses & then finally a lab tech to get my I.V in properly after 2 attempts in different locations...i ended up with a huge, dark purple bruise that didnt go away until weeks later!
oh & then the epidurals i had when having my children...thank god i wont ever have to go through that again cuz i done got me fixed! no more babies, lol.

This kinda got me thinking....
I think it's just because with a tattoo or piercings, it's something you REALLY want. You're all jazzed and excited about it. And you're prepared to take the "pain" to get want you really want.
However, with a shot, whether it be at the dr, dentist, or where ever else, it's something you don't particularly want. You're not excited or jazzed about it. And you mentally freak yourself out.

Re: anyone else afraid of needles?
lol alright im not alone.

I am afraid of me getting stuck, yet I stick needles in people for a living(phlebotomist). Ironic.

wow...that's different.
may i ask why you dont like to be stuck?
i mean i hate it too but coming from you i figure that you opinion would be interesting

I'm in nursing school on my way to becoming an RN and have to give people injections from time to time. Not bad giving them haha but I don't much care for getting them. We had to stick ourselves with an insulin syringe during our checkoff to be able to administer meds. That didn't hurt but it's just something about sticking yourself with something lol

6', 200lbs, almost half of my body inked, several piercings and I black out like a little girl when I see a needle.
All the ink on my right arm I did myself but a tattoo needle is WAY different than getting a shot.

Re: anyone else afraid of needles?
I absolutely HATE it when nurses bring my tattoos and piercings up when I turn away during a shot. "Why are you turning away? You have a bunch of tattoos and 100 piercings..." IT'S NOT THE SAME DANG IT! One thing though, I had to get a peice of metal that was stuck underneath my nail... The doctor gave me 2 shots on my finger and 2 more right underneath my nail. I turned away for the shots but while he was cutting away at the nail and peeling it back I just had to watch. :D
I don't "hate" them or am "freaked" out by them but I can't help feeling a bit nervous right before a needle is going to be stuck INTO my skin. Some medications that are injected really hurt. I'm more afraid of pain than anything else. Yes I have a bunch of tattoos and I can honestly say I HATE getting them but love their beauty, I just have to go through the pain to have them.
Sorry, small rant. :)
-
shots dont bother me at all. I give blood, have had surgeries where they had to insert ivs and what not and i sit and watch them do it. I have a very high pain thresh hold which deff helps. The only one that hurt was the one they put in my hand during my last surgery. Left a huge black an blue for about 2 weeks.

Tattoos and needles are two completely different worlds. Tattoo needles are tiny and most of the time, you don't even see them. All you here is a buzzing and the needle only goes but so deep. Medical needles are meant to go INTO you and they are quite visible.
That said, I have absolutely ZERO fear of both tattoo needles and medical needles. I used to be terrified of needles as a small child. They'd have to hold me down to get a shot in me. Then one day I told myself I'd watch them give me a vaccination. I forced myself to watch and after that day I've never been afraid again. Actually, one time I had to go to the ER because my dog had bitten me, enough to put a hole in my hand and a hole in my arm. My mother, the nurse, couldn't watch the doctor inject both puncture wounds with the numbing stuff (can't remember what its called) but I was fascinated. I watched him inject the larger wound and then stitch it up. Then he moved up to the hole in my hand. They injected it multiple times but it would not numb up, so I got to watch him stitch the hole in my hand with no pain meds. I thought it was cool. My mother was about to pass out and she's a nurse!

Dude I have a whole mess of tattoos but at the doctors I hate tattoos and giving blood is definitely out of the question.

Funny thing is ****I could save any one of you**** Blood type O:gj:
Problem for you is, I dont know how you are going to get my blood:rolleye2::rolleye2::rolleye2:

O.O the same thing happend to me in November, for emergency surgery...
Cept when I was in teh ER, as one DR was gettin my medical history, the other was drawing blood (it actually helped some...) then, I hear "Uh-oh..." from the EMT guy drawing my blood. Apparently I give blood well :O
All I know is I had blood all down my forearm, and they had to give me quite a few shots of saline to get the bleeding down....(don't make much sense to me)
BUT! the pain of teh needle (they stuck the largest size they had in me! :O) made the pain from my very swollen appendix go down :P
Then I woke up from the actual surgery, had an IV in my hand, 'cos they were gonna use the one in my elbow for drawing blood... Ok fine, I can at least move my arm a bit now. Next day, a nurse came in told me she needed blood, fine I don't need another needle. WRONG :rage: she stuck me THREE times trying to find the vain in my other arm, when CLEARLY I had the open vain in my other arm :rage::rage::rage:
Above mentioned events, have deepend my hatred for needles... But only medical, as I do plan on getting a few tattoos...
Get this too... My bf's mother, draws blood for a living...

Sorry to hear that the phlebotomist drawing your blood were incompetent. It is people like them that gives us good phlebotomists' a bad name!
-
On another note, I felt absolutly terrible when I had to hold my 5lb Maltese to get her blood drawn at the vet :( I shouldn't have said that I think she'd be more comfortable with me...
She didn't flinch, nuttin... :O And that needle looked big for her... The vet nurse said she'd draw blood from my dog any day since she's so good about it...
But she kept giving my mom a nasty look after that... My mom actually told her "What are you lookin at me like that for? I wasn't holding you when they stuck ya!"

I don't think he was incompetent. He was actually one of the best people that's drawn my blood. That's the only time I've had an IV in that arm, and when I get my shots in that arm, they bleed alot too, (left arm BTW).
Most of the time if I get blood drawn, it's from my right arm, with a teeny tiny vein... My left arm however, has a big vein running through it. It's mostly the nurse who said I HAD to have blood drawn from the other arm, and missed twice that makes me hate needles more...
That and my dad thinks its hilarious to use safety pins and try and poke my feet...

Re: anyone else afraid of needles?
Needles don't bother me at all-never have my whole life which is a good thing because I'm diabetic and have to give myself shots..heh
-
I love tattoos and piercings. I also have no problem with getting my blood drawn. Shots... Yeah, they just freak me out! Same with finger sticks. OUCH!!!
-
Re: anyone else afraid of needles?
Honestly, i love needles. i gave myself bars in my wrist once because i love the feeling of the needles... however when i have to get a shot i completely flip. Its not that the needles themselves hurt or scare me, its just i HATE the feeling of the fluid being injected into my skin. It just freaks me out!
-
Re: anyone else afraid of needles?
I absolutely hate needles! Whenever I go for a blood test my hands start to sweat like crazy and I have to turn my head while they stick the needle in my arm. However, I did get my tongue pierced a few years ago and that was a nice sized needle but the thing is that I did not even see the needle so it didn't really bother me at all.
-
I'm the same way. I hate needles!!! I have a few tattoos and several piercing, but I still get worked up whenever I have to get a shot/have blood drawn. I even donate blood whenever I get the chance and I tell the nurse "I will faint, just so you know", and they just keep drawing blood while I'm passed out on the table  Seeing blood is not something I can handle!!! I get really faint just looking at it.
-
I don't mind needles in the least bit. I find it amusing how nurses are in the habit of trying to distract you and get you to look away for blood draws. I used to donate plasma regularly years ago, do medical studies needing LOTS of blood draws, have had IVs, and had a few injections for dental stuff. I had my wisdom teeth finally pulled a few years ago and the oral surgeon had trouble trying to get the needle into my jawbone. That happened for a filling, too.
You should see me flip out if I get a woodtick attached to me though..
-
Personally, getting shots and blood drawn is no big deal to me. Although that's only because I've had to have blood drawn more times than I could possibly count because of the "health train wreck" I am. Now it just intrigues me to watch them draw blood from me.

On this same note, a GOOD phlebotomist is an absolute godsend in my book. I've had to go back post-op for all sorts of bloodwork (hemoglobin was low 7's just prior to surgery...had 4 units after).
The phlebotomist @ my Dr's office ROCKS. She wears a set of those fake plastic vampire teeth on her nametag, and gets me in & out of there in no time. She is sooooo awesome at keeping me distracted that she's over & done before I've even realized she's drawn 3-4 vials.
GOOD phlebotomists deserve a WHOLE LOT of credit in making an unpleasant process much, much easier. :)
