What to get to start out?
alright so here it goes. i want to have a variety at first. what if i got.. Lesser, pastel, Bumble Bee, and Pinstripe. now the questin is does anything in there sound redundant as far as genetics go? and which ones would you reccommend buying male and which ones female as far as options go in the future?
-
I'd get male pastel and female all the rest :)
That's just me though.
-
hmm thats what i was thinking. but im still new at this haha
-
If that are your options for starting the collection, I would get bumblebee male, and females, depends on what you prefer and what you want to work with..you can pair him with more then one female, so you gonna have more chances on hitting those 3 dominant/codominant combinations.
-
Your chances would be like this.
male pastel:
lesser=
25%Normal
25%Lesser
25%Pastel
25%Lesser Pastel
bee=
12.5%Normal
25%Pastel
12.5%Spider
25%Bumble Bee
12.5%Super Pastel
12.5%Killer Bee
pin=
25%Normal
25%Pinstripe
25%Pastel
25%Lemon Blast

I think a male bee might be the choice to make just open up the odds, though MY choice would be all four females:gj: Takes them a couple years to get grown and ready. Then find a really nice male or two to pair with all four girls in a year or so. You never know, males might be a lot cheaper in a year or two compared to current pricing:cool:
-
ok so after seeing that im liking all the odds with the male bee a lot better what do you guys think?

You will learn young grasshopper!!! The females WILL take a couple years, unless you have the cash to drop on older females. And if you do, could you be my new best friend:D

thats what i was planning on.. shhhh :sweeet:

So....
You wanna be a Ball Breeder?
How much money do you have to start out with? Do you have a rack ready to go, if so, how many tubs is it? What morphs do you like?

I agree, that's what I did. I bought a young bumble bee and then spent money on some nice single morph females (trying to get one of each, so far I have a lesser, a pinstripe, a few spiders, and a few pastels) A double codom male is a lot less expensive than a female....and you can breed them sooner.
And then you can hold back some of your double females and sell the singles when the doubles are ready.
Name of the game is statistics (haha remember when we were all in highschool and college, hating every second of that class and wondering "when are we EVER gonna use this stuff??" well...we're using it!!) :P
Although....depending on what your pricerange is and how much money you have to invest, (this is what I kinda wish I did) instead of spending $300-400 on 10 different snakes....go splurge and spend $600-800 on 4 females and a nice male....you might want to just want to get a nice double male, and then a couple double females (nice bumble bee on kingsnake for $500 bucks shipped, can't beat that!) Instead, I ended up with 17 snakes, 15 of them are single morphs. I could've cut that number in half and had a couple more double visuals.
Good luck!

haha i AM in college. but no way in hell could i be any sort of science major. i do not do chemistry haha if i did i would be a marine bio major. and yeah thats what im planning on doing. bumble bee male, lesser female, pastel female, pinstripe female
-
If you are in school, less is more.
Get a Bee female, blast female, and get a high end male to breed to them. Keep your collection small, but get the best male you can afford..................................or wait until you have your own house.
Dave
-
haha i am also one of those kids that has a house in college
-
when you say highend male.. what would you reccomend?

When breeding fewer (or just a single) male(s) to a stable of multiple females, it always pays to have high quality males. An investment in a single high quality animal goes a longer distance if it can produce multiple clutches.
-
yeah im definiely going with a nice bumble bee as my male to start out
-
what prices do you guys think i should expect to see at repticon?

Re: What to get to start out?
ok, so if you have a house and do not have to worry about moving from dorm to dorm...
Get a Bumble Bee Female, Lemon Blast female, another few females that you like, and a highend male. How highend is up to you and your wallet. If you can get a Desert male, I would look at that or a Champagne male. If those are too $$$$$, get a nice Double or Triple Co-Dom male. I would stay under 10 snake, so spend wisely.

i like the idea of the bumble bee male. that seems to give me a lot of options to start with if i go with only about 3-4 females to start with. right now im leaning towards 1.0 bumble bee, 0.1 pastel het clown, 0.1 pinstripe, 0.1 lesser. one question i have is would it be better to go with the pastel het clown or a spider het clown?
-
Bumble bee male...
I like to have a male that has no spider in it. While I love the Spider morph, there is a good percentage of people out there that will not buy Spiders because of the wobble. If you get a Bee male, half your offspring could be Spiders. Secondly, there is no Super Spider, I like my males to be able to make Supers, and if they are combos, I like both morphs of the combo to be able to produce Supers....Pastel Yellowbelly, Sulfur Mojave, Butter Cinnamon, etc. There are a ton of Bees out there, and even more Spiders and Pastel, why would you want to make more? I produce Spiders and Pastels on accident, while shooting for other Combos. While it might or might not fit my "Super producing male", I would say a Calico or Calico cross male would be a great male to start out with. A Bee and Blast female and a Calico male would be sweet, and a great start. Remember, buy your females now, and you might get a free Pastel or lower end male along with the purchase of your combo females. Keep the lower end male as a back up, and get your male next year. Females take longer to mature.

Pastel seems to enhance everything... And a Super Pastel produces all Pastels...
Thus I chose to use a Super Pastel male putting him to several single morph females. This guarantees all of my morphed offspring are double morphs (pastel + mother's morph)...
I agree with the suggestion above to avoid a male with Spider in it. Spider is one of my absolute favorite appearances, I have personally chosen to stay away from them as I do n0ot want to contribute to wobbly snakes. I understand not everyone feels this way, but enough people do to warrant not using a spider male as your sole breeding male.
-
ah ok i see your logic there and i like the idea of the calico male. dont understand the free pastel with a purchase of a female though haha
-
bumble bees go between 300-500
-
Free male....
If you bought a few snakes from me, and really wanted a Pastel, and I had a male sitting around, you could have it. Some Het pairs, where the value is really in the female, you basically get the male free. Bottom line, if you spend a few grand and need a Pastel male, you can have one:)

The female pastel het clown/spider het clown is nice ($1500+ nice) but you would want a male clown or at least het clown to go with it.
It does make sense to buy the females first, I bought some females and a male to start, but had larger normals to breed him to the first year.
Plus, waiting another year to buy the male might give what you want some time to drop in price.
-
So today I ended up getting a 445g Spider male and 275g NERD line Pastel het Ghost female. Paid a decent price in my opinion.. package deal for 350.. What do u guys think?

Not a bad deal at all:gj::gj:
