Egg Oddity
So my female ball python laid 11 eggs yesterday and they all look great with the possible exception of two that are quite different. The two are conjoined. I have never seen this in my limited breeding experience and haven't seen any pictures of it happening to anyone else either. The eggs are connected by about 1/2 an inch and are rounder than usual. Other than the bit that's conjoined being a little dark the eggs are typical color and texture. If I can figure out how to post my picture of it I will. Does anybody know what the chances are of one or both of these eggs surviving through incubation?

not to be negative.
I saw one picture and story of conjoined eggs.
One was infertile though.
And both didn't survive
But maybe if both are fertile.
Best of luck to you.
But yes pictures! That would help alot

wow thats odd? pictures please lol if youre not sure how upload them to photobucket and copy the img code and then paste on here but sorry if you already know this

if you mean that they are connected like sausage links then they should be fine as long as they are fertile.

Re: Egg Oddity
I wonder if there are blood vessels connecting the two eggs? Have you tried to candle them?
-
have you candled them to see any veins yet.that way you can tell if fertile or not.

Re: Egg Oddity
Both eggs have healthy veins and look fertile other than the strange yellowish connecting tissue. I don't see any veins in that gooey stuff.

i would just let the eggs be and keep a close i on them for changes and candle them every so offten to see if any changes happen.thats what i would do if it was me .other then that wait it out and good luck.

Re: Egg Oddity
You should try to document the hatching on video! That would be freakin sweet!
-
If they are both fertile I would bet they will do fine.
-
thats freaky! and totally awesome!good luck!
-
I wonder if you should try to clamp them off?

I debated about a forced separation but I worry that would cause more damage than good. I'm just gonna cross my fingers and hope for a two headed blue polka-dotted snake to come out.

thats what i would do. leave the eggs the way they are but deff document it from beg to end.deff a cool story to tell and show pics on.if you have healthy veins showing then you should have to new special babbies hatching.just candle and keep a eye on them.:snake:

Re: Egg Oddity
Yes! Please document the whole process with pics and video!
You could be the next YouTube snake sensation!

This is a weird request, but if it is infertile, or the snake/snakes inside dies, would you mind putting it in the freezer and selling it to me? :)

That could definitely be arranged!

Re: Egg Oddity
I have had that same thing happen to me a few times. First time I tried clamping them off and both died so please don't try that one. Second time I just left them be and they were fine and one of the eggs had twins in it. The third time they got into each others eggs and got all tangled up and died. The last time it happened I cut right at the connection point at day 50 and they were just fine. So there are risks and in all honesty if I were you I would just leave them alone and candle them once a week and hope for the best.

Great! Just keep me in mind if something goes wrong.
Here's hoping it doesn't though! Twin snakes would be cool! :D

Re: Egg Oddity
Here is what the egg looks like candled. The other side looks similar to this. I also included a picture of the entire clutch after I pulled off mama.

Re: Egg Oddity
that so interesting I bet that was a pain to pass for the female, heck i be interested in one of the possible twins if they both hatch out lol ( love to see if that a trait or justa fluke with the clutch lol..)

Yeah it did take her a considerably longer amount of time to get those ones out. I'll keep you in mind if they do successfully hatch.

Re: Egg Oddity
That's awesome! My very first egg that I cut had twins in it! But I've never seen this before. So ifthe egg split like that, does that mean the twins would be identical?

Re: Egg Oddity
Here's an update on the eggs. They're about half way through incubation and the connective material has been growing mold. The eggs on both sides appear so still be alive and well so I'm not ready to give up yet! Any advice?

I saw a video from one of the guys at NERD cleaning the eggs from mold. Don't use chemicals though, use water and maybe a little soap. Remember not to rotate the egg. :D

Re: Egg Oddity
Isn't there some foot powder or something that people use to stop the mold on the eggs?

Re: Egg Oddity
nice eggs and what a huge clutch!!good luck!!

I just read the whole thread and have looked at the srpead of the mold. In the day 48 post, I saw what appeared to be a wet spot growing between the two eggs, and this has indeed turned out to be moldy. It looks like the mold has spread (albeit very slowly) since the day 2 pic. I would bet based on the looks from the candling pic that both eggs are fine. However, in an attempt to minimize the spread of that mold, or it potentially becoming wet again and causing more damage, I would spread a thin layer of Elmer's glue around the entire area, to minimize any mroe spread. Also, as someone else stated, there is a possibility of the hatchlins pipping into each other's egg. I would definitely cut those two eggs around day 52, so that you pay closer attention to what they are doing. I have never actually recorded the statistics on how many animals actually crawl out of the hole that is cut, but taking a guess, I would say that about 1 in 100 hatchlings in my incubator will cut there own hole even though I have provided one for them.
The two things mentioned above is what I would do, and personally feel it gives you the best shot at hatching those two eggs problem free.
Good luck, and please let us know how it works out.

Re: Egg Oddity
how's the egg right now?hope to see some babies crawling out from it..good luck.
-
Updates? These should be hatching soon, if they already haven't hatched, right?
-
Re: Egg Oddity
i wish they will be doing great..:please:

WOW! Very interesting indeed! I don't know how I missed this. Hope all is well still.

Re: Egg Oddity
That is very odd. Hope all is well with that egg. updates on it?
-
Omgosh updates :O It's neat they were fertile!

Re: Egg Oddity
LOL, strange and funny. It might just be two nipple eggs connected. I also bet they will be fine since you arent seeing any connecting veins

Re: Egg Oddity
Thank you so much for all the interest in our snakes! We are extremely happy to report that both snakes survived incubation! All 11 eggs ended up hatching healthy snakes and we ended up with 2.5 spiders and 4.0 normals. Both of the fused eggs babies were normal males. We have individual pictures of all of the babies on our website. www.chippewavalleyreptiles.com This quite a fun process and thanks again to everyone that provided much needed advice and enthusiasm.
