    Baby Brown Snake...<3 *pix*
Well, I was originally going to open a thread to help identify this little guy, but I'm now pretty satisfied it's a brown snake. Now, pictures!

Isn't he an absolute cutie? His little tongue was going a mile a minute, and he was extremely inquisitive. Poor little guy had a stuck shed, but it just rained, so I'm sure it'll work its way off soon.

I let him go near where I found him after the little photoshoot...<3

That's an adult right there. You should see fresh born babies. Talk about tiny....:O

I produced a few litters as a kid and had to cut worms into small pieces to feed them. I don't think I have ever seen a smaller snake in my life.

That would be the Eastern Brown Snake. :)
"Brown Snake" is a name commonly given to several different species, one being of the colubrid family in North America and sometimes Mexico.

    As far as I understand..
I may be corrected if I am wrong.

EDIT: Also, I am not good at identifying native snakes in North America, so I'm not agreeing that what the OP found is actually a Brown Snake of the genus Storeria.. I'll leave the identifying to others. ;)

Thank you, Garweft! Yeeeah, I figured it was probably an adult after reading up on them a little...it's just so hard to not view them as babies!! hehehe. Such cuties.

And thanks everyone! I would love to keep one someday, lol. Right now I'm actually headed to Topeka, KS to catch some Italian Wall Lizards. I'm so excited!!

So is it kosher to keep a wild caught snake?

Depends on local laws, which can vary a LOT from one place to another...so definitely check up on stuff like that before deciding to keep any wild caught critter.

J is right. It depends on the local laws. Here is GA you can't keep as a pet anything that in considered native to the snake.

It sucks because that means I can't have a cornsnake, even those bred in captivity specifically for the pet trade.

    WC snakes
Here in IL if u catch a non-endangered snake in a non-protected area its fine. But as far as keeping them i only do so if there sick or injured and make sure to keep them away from ur collection they have parasites. I've kept and actually bred some dekay's brown snakes but they were all ill or injured ive had a total of 5 adults all of them went back into a protected area ( they got hurt in the first place due to there location). Two had very severe MBD (looked like they had a mountain range on there back) one was half run over by a bike, one had RI issues from a prescribed burn and one had been burned very badly from a prescribed burn somehow survived for 2-3 week but was too sluggish to live.
