The only time I had ever needed to bathe one of my Balls was when I first rescued my female and she had horrible stuck shed. I didn't take any pictures though. :hmm:
Cute picture though. :gj:

Re: bathing balls!!!
Wonderful idea! I wish I had some pics to share but I'll try to take some when I can. Very cute pic :)
-
That's a funny looking fish :D
Very cute :gj:

Are you using this to help him go the bathroom or remove shed? I imagine baths are a bit stressful so I've never given any of mine one. They shed normally and defecate normally. I'm just curious, cool picture either way :D
Regards,
B

Theres no reason to bathe bp's for a just because
-
Re: bathing balls!!!
I wont bathe my spider for just whatever. But I will only bathe him when he gets poop in his water bowl and plays around in it.
-
Re: bathing balls!!!
My girl likes to create art when she goes to the bathroom, so she will generally get a quick bath to clean her off when I clean the tub. I'll try to get pics next time.
-
Cute picture! He doesn't look to happy. I had to put mine in water once for a bad shed other than that they only use it for drinking.
-
it was to help hydrate her during baytril and she was shedding during the baytril shots, plus she went without pooping for like three meals.it was vet ordered.i didnt do it just to do it.
-
no she wasnt a very happy
-
icandi it wasnt just because.and for whoever else reads this its not just because or just for whatever.like i said right above my bp had some issues going on when i first got her and needed it and the vet said it would help her.she layed a big ol stinky after that shed as well. her husbandry is spot on and she is in her next shed.wel see how that turns out and if she leaves another present.
im not condoning anyone to go bathe their bps to post a pic,if you have them share them.that is all.
-
i just had to bathe my sisters BP cuz he was in a bad shed, i didn't get pictures though. he was pretty POed about it! i absolutely love snakes, but when they are in water it creeps me out how they move IDK why lol but it does!
-
I don't see anything wrong with it. Of course you shouldn't bathe them excessively but whenever I clean the tank mine gets a soak. Sometimes he likes it and just stays there and takes a drink and other times he wont have it and will start exploring. So I just wipe him off and let him slither around while I clean. Also I get what people say when they slither around in their feces. But even despite that it is only when I clean the tank.
As long as it isn't excessive I don't think it is that serious of an issue.

Nah, she will be fine! Some of mine go 2-3 months without going. Crazy stuff. There are others that can help you pinpoint signs that you should be worried, but 3 weeks is okay.

Re: bathing balls!!!
So my little guy is shedding his first shed w me i bathed him and he doesnt like to stay in the water long. he was a little bloated but when he got in the water he went potty. so i took him out and got him a clean warm bowl to saok in. he doesnt like to be in there to bathe but its helping his shedding along what should i do? cus he shedd his face on his own and its been 2 hours and he hasnt done rest
-
Shedding can be an all day or night process. Make sure the humidity in the tank is up and let him be.

Dude was the OP's snake in the toilet????

Re: bathing balls!!!
Wow I'm a little surprised there are so many responses to this thread questioning bathing....I actually was going to post a thread asking what people use to bathe their snakes. A few of my youngsters will get dried feces on them and I always try to rinse them off but often times its hard to get all of it off.....I didn't know if there was a mild dish soap or anything that was safe to use.....I don't want dried poo on my smelly snake! Anyone else have this issue or do I just have dirty babies? :)
-
I wouldn't suggest dish soap. Water should be just fine and is the most safe.
If you let the ball python soak for a few minutes then the hardness of the feces should soften up and come off more easily. Also you shouldn't bathe them too often.
Snakes were not meant to take baths regularly just to get them "clean".
Mainly it is for shedding purposes.
-
Dawn dish soap is fine to use in the water, just a drop or two, but I'd add it once the snake is already in the bath since they usually like to drink for the first bit of it. I have had to bathe my snakes, especially after a messy feeding two days later and they have dried rat blood on them...it's gross and nothing a bath can't fix. Nothing wrong with baths, it's not necessary but certainly won't harm them. I try to as little as possible for my paranoid/shy snakes, but my other ones wouldn't even care even if I did it every day (which I don't...just sayin')
My 4 y/o son handles my snakes, so baths after a messy poo and messy feeding is best for me. He washes his hands after handling but still, I know I wouldn't want to smell like snake poo or dead rat...even if I was a snake lol.

I'm looking at this Topic few days now.... about batching balls.... and I have Really Really Inappropriate Comment on Tips on My Fingers :rofl::rofl:
But i dont Know If Admin stuff have Big Enough sense of Humor to dont give me infraction for that so I just write nothing :rofl::rofl:

So, as predicted, my big girl left me a nice painting this weekend. I cleaned it out without thinking to grab a pic of her masterpiece, but remembered this thread when I was cleaning her off.
Sorry for the crap pic. Not sure what those burn mark things are but they're on my cell phone camera lens and I can't clean them off... :rage:

seems like your bp doesnt mind the water.her masterpiece hahaha.that wouldve been funny to see,i hope mine doesnt start that..oh man
-
Re: bathing balls!!!
Nah, she doesn't mind the water at all. It's pretty much routine for her anymore. Poop, paint, rinse, repeat...

Personally I see no problem with an occasional soak. They will hydrate through the skin and if there are humidity issues it will keep them hydrated. There are little to no down sides, just as long as the water is not too warm (88+) and it is not deeper than the 1/2 up the body of the snake.
mark and marley I have a small suggestion for the future rather than a sink buy a cheap 'dish pan' or any correctly sized flat bottomed container that way you don't get a deep spot the water can be an even depth.
Soaking before a shed however is not a great idea. It does not do what would be expected. The layer of liquid between the old and new skin is not water but a secretion and is slippery. It acts as a lubrication to the shedding skin a soak before the shed cycle washes away this lubrication and can lead to poor sheds. After an incomplete shed the secretion dries and a soak helps re-moisten the old skin and aids in removal. Snakes should not be soaked when 'blue'

I now have a rack....but for the past year or so I have only had tanks and my male BP (who was my first snake) would go into shed and shed in a bazillion pieces...it looked like it snowed in his tank. I read this was due to low humidity....and it was hard to keep the humidity high in a tank....so I would put a small plastic tank (like the kind a kid would keep a hermit crab in) inside his large tank (40 breeder) and leave a warm soaked hand towel inside the small plastic tank. And he will get in there and "steam" (as I call it, like a little sauna!) and he will stay in there for hours....and the next day I find his shed all in one piece in his tank. So....I dont know if this is not a good thing to do or not...it has always worked for me and I'm assuming if he didn't like it he wouldn't go in there to 'soak'....granted the hand towel is soaked with water then rung out (so its wet but not a pool of water either).
I did this with a couple other snakes I have and they all get in the smaller tank to hang out while in shed and they all shed nicely in one piece with no problems and no shed left over (no retained eyecaps, etc)
-
That would basically be a humid hide of sorts. I have used basically the same with moss they work quite well soaking in free water is totally different. A humid hide will allow the snake to re-hydrate when de-hydrated and the aid the enzyme production that breaks the separation between the layers of skin and lubricates the separation of the outer epidermal generation and the stratum germinativum. (the skin to be shed and new skin underneath if there are lay terms I don't know what they are...) Washing away this enzyme can (not always ) lead to poor sheds. The previous post of a soaked snake before the actual shed cycle and the shed is currently incomplete. It does no harm, incomplete sheds, but this is likely the cause I thought that some might find it useful. Take away what you will.
-
i was left broke after the vet visit so the sink had to do at that time.Marley has a tub for bathing(if need be),and for temporary placement when time comes for the big cleaning. her eyes werent blue.thanks for peoples suggestions and whatever else is happening in this thread.
-
Sorry the blue was pointed towards another poster, I hate perpetuating myths. These are little one eyed Lucy having her bath, she had been treated for tapeworms (I will not feed frozen that has not been frozen for less than 24 hours again....) That caused constipation issues so daily soaks for 30 min. She is a very low activity snake so she is the only one of ours that gets regular soaks and 30 min of crawling about the floor every week mostly. She seems prone to such issues. She is the most calm and trustworthy animal ever, a real lap snake.

Re: bathing balls!!!
I only bathe my Ball when she has a bad shed, or when she plays with her food and ends up exploding it all over herself and her tank. I think the last time I bathed her was for the RI she had, and BOY, she let me know she wasn't happy about it. She hissed, swam around like a madman, and at one point she submarined around the tub blowing bubbles. :P Normally she tolerates it pretty well.
Next time she has to get a bath I'll get pictures.
-
those are some nice pics kite and she looks really calm and thats super nice your taking such good care of her as well.
-
I bathe mine every time they defecate. I use Johnson&Johnson baby shampoo. They don't mind. My blood loves it. He gets bath time just for the hell of it.
