Rocks that are okay for snakes?

Hey was just wondering, if you can use any type of rock for shedding. I have a pretty jagged rock in the tank atm, is this okay or should i get a smoother rock?

I wouldn't put anything sharp in the tank...but that's just me. I've never needed rocks for shedding and I've had nothing but perfect sheds for the one in my tank.

As long as it isn't so jagged that you could hurt yourself on it, it should be okay. Personally, I do what's called the five year old test. If it isn't a rock that I would let a five year old have, then I don't let my snakes have it.

I just watched my cinny shed from her bin with just a water bowl and paper towels. She rubbed her head on herself to get it going and had a perfect shed. If the husbandry is right you may not need a rock.

Snakes dont need anything to rub against to aid in shedding just proper humidity

Good advice.

As the others have said, if your husbandry is right, you don't need anything like that for them to shed properly. The only thing I have in my tubs are newspaper and a water bowl and all my snakes shed just fine.

My snakes shed just fine without one, but I do have a large rock in one of the tanks for when she wants to climb around. It doesn't have any jagged edges on it, and she does just fine with it.

everyones right on this one.you dont need it if the husbandry is good.but it wouldnt hurt to add a sanitized rock to help.jagged and smooth wont help but an all around porous and rough rock would.

I wouldn't use a porous one either - they are the ****ens to get urates off of. :rolleyes:

Since they really don't need one I would just skip it alltogether.

For the sake of argument... If you want a rock for the decorative aesthetics of it, just find a large, flat, smooth, river rock. Boil it to remove any nasties. There ya go. Have any rivers nearby? One of the rivers near me is my prime source for drift/bog wood for my fish aquarium. Nice river rocks are in abundance. Safe, smooth, non porous, and pretty.

My broth added a pumice stone to his shed humid box that his snake loves. I dont now if it is bad or not, but I do not know of an animal that doesnt love a good scratcher thing.
