I decided some months ago to get serious with my balls. I've built a couple racks, added some new gorgeous snakes. Got a rat rack and started raising my own rats.

I've been taking better notes capturing weight, defecation, sheds and eating eating schedule...but I've found it difficult to go to my laptop each time.

What do you all use to track this? I wonder if there are card templates people use? What are your best practices for note taking?

I use a whiteboard in my snake room. I then enter it into iHerp.com a couple times a week. Seems to work great so far.

I love Iherp also. I do want to get better tracking on my rat room though. I haven't entered all of them on I-herp. Does anyone enter there rats there? How do you do records on them?

I've tracked mine in a little sectioned notebook so far. It's worked out great for me, but considering there's only three sections and I'm getting a couple more snakes next month, I'll have to figure something else out.. or have two books.

Then I recommend iHerp :) It has everything I could imagine that would need to be tracked, including breeding. Though, I'd prefer to also have hard copies of the records.. who knows what can happen to electronics/websites. ;)

I use MS Excel. It allows me to quickly and easily keep track of all the parameters I want. I did use iHerp, but found that it was too slow for keeping track of all my snakes.

Are you using a particular app? Or just notes?

I use index cards until they fill up, then transfer all the info into MS Excel. Then start a new card and once that one fills up, you guessed it! Transfer on over again. Makes it easier so I don't have to open up my laptop EVERYTIME someone eats/sheds etc. This way I can get a few months logged in to a program at once, keep the notecards in a file for back-up, and everything's good to go :)

I use data cards I created, and I keep them in plastic envelopes under each tub. I also have a pen on my desk in the snake room. I put all the info on the cards everytime I do something, and then I take those cards, once a week, and Input all the info in Vyper Reptile Tracking System. The Vyper sysyem is amazing, and its really easy to use. I haven't had any problems with my records at all since I got that program.

    Hope this helps.

I too use paper I tried digital versions but found I was fighting the software to make it do things that way I like them. I have a feeding chart that has my 9 on one page, it has the advantage of seeing trends in feeding like 4 adults stopped feeding in the same 2 weeks during breeding season. I have individual charts for each snake on weight, shed cleaning, fecal exams ect.

Does anybody know of a phone app that works? Anyone tried to make one? Just curious, I've been using the good'ol notebook and pen method myself but wouldn't mind trying something like this if it exist.

I have an iPad so i just take that into my snake room with me when doing tub checks/feedings and record as I go on iherp. Love that site!

I think there's a way you can download a backup of your records for safe keeping. I should start doing that every now and then...

I have a spiral notebook and colored sticky notes (blue for shed, green for feeding, and yellow for defication). Every time something happens it gets dated and stickied. Works good so far.

I have a binder that I print out sheets for. It's right there on hand when I need it. I write everything down in ut. It's simple to make the excel sheets and the binder won't crash with technology.
