Noob to breeding with question about possible new BPs
Hi, I am a total noob to breeding, so please excuse my ignorance on most of this, I am getting very confused! My gf and I were interested in getting into breeding, not on a large scale or anything. I am totally in love with Piebalds and she likes spiders, but we thought it would be so much more interesting to try and breed some. I was looking on ROyal Constrictor Designs last night, has anyone bought from Garrick DeMeyer?
ANyway , I got an answer back from someone on craigslist who is selling his 3 BPs. He says that he has 2 females ( one het normal/pied and one het normal/spider) and then one male, which he says is light color but I am assuming it's a normal. If I had these, assuming he is right, and I bred them with a 100% het normal/pied what are the chances I would get a piebald? same question as to the het spider with another het spider. hope this makes sense and I am not sounding like an idiot. :O.
Oh, also he is asking $75 for all 3 BPs, is it probably just wishful thinking that he is telling the truth about these guys? the two females were born in 2010, the male in 2009.Thank you for any help!

Het spider? Do you mean het spider pied? Because as far as I know you either have a spider or you don't. $75 for all three including two females and all having a little bit of growth on them is too good. I'd stay far away!
I haven't Heard anything bad about Royal Constrictor Designs. I've e-mailed him before and he was very good about answering my questions. I haven't got anything from him though.
Anyways- if I'm wrong some one will correct me. Luck!

Re: Noob to breeding with question about possible new BPs
i never heard of a het spider .... you might want to check out reading a gene chart ... i could be wrong, because spider is a dominant trait.... as far as the "het pied X het pied" = 1 of the clutch will be "pied" some will be het pied and some will be normal..... please correct me if i am wrong
-
Yeah, spider is Co-Dominant. Nothing about it is recessive like the pieds.

Re: Noob to breeding with question about possible new BPs
I actually just got a reply from Garrick DeMeyer to answer the question I had about breeding a pair of het pieds. He is selling a pair for $325. also, duh, I meant a spider/pastel pair. But the guy from craigslist DID list his as a "het normal/spider breeder". I"ll try to post the pics he sent me.ok, not sure how to do that.

Re: Noob to breeding with question about possible new BPs
go to worldofballpythons.com that will solve a lot of your ? with the genetic wizard it will tell u about what you could possibly get like when u breed het pie x het pie u will get 25% normal, 25% pied, and 50% het out of a clutch of 4 eggs hope this helps i would say get them just in case he does know what he has and for 75 dollars for 3 bp that aint too bad even if they are normals. I bought a pastel and a 1300 gram female off craigslist for $80 he just didnt have the room he needed for the upcoming babies that he didnt know about when he rescued a few bp.

Even $75 for a spider and a pastel (males) seems questionable.
"het normal/spider breeder" Would be a red flag for me.
I'm trying to think who else would have het pieds for sale right now. If you wait a couple of months you'll find people's clutches are hatching and more will be available. You can always toss up a wanted thread in the wanted/trade/sale section.
I would rather spend a little more money on a quality snakes from someone with a good reputation than try to save a few bucks from an unknown source.
just my :2cent:

I would only buy visuals from a rando on Craigslist. Those are probably not het for anything and mis-sexed. Craigslist is very notorious for that kind of crap...

There is no such thing as a "het spider". The fact that this guy that is selling snakes is not aware of this is a huge red flag. Also if he doesn't have proof that he has a "het pied" then don’t bother. Proof being papers, parents, and/or siblings. I personally with never buy a het anything unless I know the breeder well and can see proof that the snake is in fact a het. A lot of times on CL you see ppl sell normals as "hets" in order to sell faster and/or boost up the price on a normal. Typical so-called hets you see on CL are piebalds and albinos. I'd be careful, because not only are you buying a young snake that you'd have to raise to breedable size and weight, but you are spending time, love, money or a project with expectations. If those expectations aren't met because you bought a normal thinking it was a het for piebald and you are ready to breed a couple seasons from now, you're going to be seriously disappointed.
For example I have a spider possible het albino. I know he's a possible het (66%) albino because I seen his parents and know the breeder well. 66% het meaning there is 2/3 chance he is het for albino. Example: take an Easter basket and put 3 eggs in there. Two are filled with candy and one isn't. Pick one and hope you get candy... het being the candy. Now I'm going to breed him to my female albino a few seasons from now just to prove him out. I'm not expected him to be het albino, but I'd love to get lucky. I will be shooting for spider 100% het albinos and I know I will get at least that.
So be cautious when it comes to buying hets off CL with no proof. I'm starting out this year and have been working with honest breeders in my area and building good working relationships. Not only have they guided me in the right way, but have helped me start my collection. So that's really all the advice I can give.
Hope I helped,
Vitto

Re: Noob to breeding with question about possible new BPs
I would def want to see the snakes in question. If it is close, you may want to just take a ride out to see them. If you are even remotely interested, look for things such as stuck shed, mites, loose skin (not fed properly), how the snakes are housed (are they in the same tank "big no no" or housed separately), look for scale rot, mouth rot, etc...check this site and also google to get pics of what I mentioned and check them for such issues. Also, no such thing as a het spider or het pastel. It's either spider or normal. I'm betting a normal that came from a spider to normal breeding. You could get a great deal from Craigslist, I have seen other's get them. But, in my OP, you'd be better served to stick with Garrick DeMeyer. You would be getting a healthy snake and a responsible breeder who would stand behind it if there were any issues. Good luck! :)

Re: Noob to breeding with question about possible new BPs
From the looks of them, I see three normals. The one on the top right would probably be the one they are saying is a spider or "het spider" as they refferred to it as. It has a very reduced pattern but is not a spider. I don't see a pastel among them either. Here is my spider and pastel to compare:
Spider

Pastel

They look like they feed them as they're not too skinny (the one in the middle I'm guessing is a 2009 or 2010). The others may be older. I'd want to have them properly sexed as well to ensure you're getting what they are advertising as far as male to female if you are serious about them. As I stated before, if you want to get into breeding and want to start with def 100% hets, Garrick DeMeyer would be the better of the two options. Good luck. :)

Just so misinformation isn't spread Spiders are a Dominate trait until proven otherwise.
OP all 3 snakes are normals and the one in the middle is extremely skinny :(

Correct me IF I am wrong but that is your chances per egg, not whole clutch?

They are all 3 normals which means he either doesnt know anything bout ball pythons or the more likely situation is a liar to get more money. I wouldnt even consider buying the three from him for the 75 even if all three were females. Stick with a reputable breeder. Kingsnake.com has alot of reputable breeders who sell their offspring on the site and I have purchased a few snakes from there from different breeders and never had a problem.
-
I wouldnt buy them. Just from his lack of knowledge on genetics shows that theres a problem. But also because they are so cheap. You can guarantee yourself those are normals.
-
Since everyone else has given advice on the CL snakes there really isn't left to say about that. As for Garrick DeMeyer, I bought my PH Caramel Glow from him and I love her, she's a great feeder. I look forward to buying another snake from him in the future. That being said, you could probably find a local breeder and save on shipping.

Re: Noob to breeding with question about possible new BPs
I'd go take a look if you were really considering it. While $75 for three snakes sounds too good to be true, maybe the person can't care for them and just wants them out. If you go take a look and all the snakes are a good weight, look nice and healthy and eat well (ask the guy if you can come out the day he feeds them to make sure they eat, don't take someone's "oh yeah don't worry, they eat great!") I think it would be worth it. Craigslist won't let you SELL animals, you can only ask for a reasonable re-homing fee, so it makes sense that you wouldn't see +/-$1000 for them.
Basically, you'd need to go see them and determine for yourself. Just my :twocents:.
(also, there isn't any such thing as a "het spider". You either have a spider or you don't. :D )
EDIT: Saw the pictures you posted. For all the horror stories about getting BP's off CL, those seem in rather good health. But all look like normals to me. The one on the far right and the one in the last photo MIGHT be dinkers, but that would be a chance you'd have to decide to take and prove out if you wanted.
