Drugs? Oh wait no its just snakes.
So I have a fun story!
I was expecting a shipment of 3 snakes this morning to my door around 10:30am. So I was just sitting around waiting for the fedex guy to get here when I get a phone call.
"Hi this is fedex and you have a package here at the office but it came in damaged, it has a hole in the box."
AAAARRRGG :cens0r: im thinking...I hoping nothing hurt the snakes right?
"I see it says the contents is a reptile? so it cant crawl out right?" she says
I explained to her that no they are snakes and they are secured in pillow cases so they cant go anywhere.
"So we dont want to put it on the truck and deliver it to your house in risk of further damaging the box, can you come to the office to pick it up?"
So I get down to fedex and im the only customer in there and theres one sales lady. So I walk up to her and say ya im picking up the snakes.
So she says ok and walks into the back room and gives a head nod to someone, which i thought was weird.
And out of the back room come a couple uniformed police men and two other guys not in uniform. One of the men sets my box down and reaches his hand out to shake mine.
Im like in my head going "deerrrrr? wtf?"
"Im so and so dectective from the county police dept. and the damage to the box is our fault. When your package arrived at the airport it didnt pass the drug dog inspection. The dogs respond to drugs and sometimes live animals. So if you dont mind opening the box for us just to confirm the contents"
So i opened the box for them and took out each pillow case, I offered to take them out of the pillow cases but the detective chickened out. He touched one of the snakes through the pillowcase and that was enough for him. So I thought that was funny that they didnt even want to look at them.
They were all ready to bust me for drugs or something but to their dissapointment I really had snakes in the box lol.
So that was my exciting morning story. Ive never heard of this happening before with drug dogs, anyone else heard of this happening?
The hole the drug dog made in the box :P

I know I thought it was wierd that a dog would respond to that too but i guess it is a dog, i know how excited they can get about critters lol
I got a 0.1 Mojave, 0.1 Spider, and 1.0 Pastel
they are all around 400g '10 babies. Im very happy with them. I snapped some cell pictures of them. Very handsome snakes, the spider is aweful shy :)

Nice. I've never herd of the dogs acting like that. Maybe it was a new dog? Odd day for sure!

Re: Drugs? Oh wait no its just snakes.
everytime i get all mine out during cleaning i let my 4 dogs come in 1 at a time and all they do is sniff and turn around and walk away. but when i get the rats out to change them they watch them like a hawk its funny everytime one moves they eyeball it until it quits moving.but the snakes they can care less what they are doing
-
Gorgeous snakes... You made me laugh. I love the fact that the detective "chickened out" Lol I would have loved to see his face if you had just pulled out the pillow cases and continued right then to pull out the snakes.:P
-
That's hilarious!! At least the snakes arrived okay.

Re: Drugs? Oh wait no its just snakes.
You should have demanded reimbursement for gas since it was their tampering that made the package undeliverable.
-
Hahaha  Wow! That is too funny, I've never heard of something like that happening. Glad the snakes are alright!

Well Luckily the office isnt that far from my house. a few miles maybe.
It was pretty sneaky how they reeled me in that way to pick it up. And they must've parked out back cuz I had no idea there were gonna be cops inside. took me by surprise for sure!

That's exactly what I was thinking! It's bull that they wouldn't deliver it because it was damaged  I've had damaged packages delivered to my door as well, I doubt they cared that much about the animals. I guarantee they just wanted to get you down there to see if there were drugs in there lol. Sneaky sneaky.

yup they are definitely creative!
my dad was a sheriff and i never even knew that the narc dogs reacted to live animals the same way as drugs.
-
Wow, funny story, thanks for sharing! :D
I would have just left it vague at 'reptile' though. Some people will freak out at the mere mention of a snake, even more so at the realization that it's in a box in their close proximity.
Another way to look at the situation it's probably better that you picked up the snake at the office any way, rather than have it ride around on a (potentially hot) truck all day.

this dog musta been a noob.
I thought of making a comment on how they gotta train their dogs better lol
-
You should have turned around and took off running for the door when they told you to open it. They would have not been very impressed but it would be funny.
-
Well I am glad your beautiful snakes where ok. I would have taken them out right there to make sure they hadn't hurt them.
Some drug dogs are also trained to sniff out illegal animals. But maybe they thought your snakes where on drugs?????

I thought about that later, like if i just took off would they just bail over the counter after me? lol i woulda probably got my ass tased...maybe that wouldnt be so fun
-
Ha, I'd love to be in that same situation, but with falsies.
Cop: What's in the box?
Me: Oh just a few snakes, here look! *pull out falsie* :D

I wonder if the dog had rattlesnake training or something in its past? My dogs seem to know the difference between pythons and rattlesnakes, but they still thought something was UP with the ball pythons.
That's a crazy spider! It looks more like a high-white pinstripe.

Oh, yeah, you know, I bet that's it.
-
Drug dogs are still just dogs. They're not infallible. I've heard of customs dogs reacting to chew toys that have been played with by other dogs recently. IDK if that's because they smell another dog's scent and get curious or if its because they're sometimes trained to detect things like drugs using [what the dog thinks are] dog toys.

I agree. There are some that are trained to smell snakes at airports to keep non native snakes from hitching a ride on the packages and causing devastation to the native ecosystem.

My dog has never paid any attention to any of my reptiles. It's like she doesn't acknowledge it as another animal because it smells differnt, or maybe she knows it's a non-threat.
-
If I were you I'd be grateful they didn't demand you cut open the snakes to prove they weren't mules. :O
It's not something you want to think about, but it does happen, people using animals as mules to transport drugs.
I suppose if they had, you could have begged for an x-ray instead.
Glad your babies are fine, and hopefully the next time FedEx won't jump to conclusions.

They would need a warrant for that. Which of course they can get easily, however if I were in that situation they would find themselves up lawsuit poo creek faster than they can recite their badge number.

It is after all still just a dog, and i know my dogs could care less about my snakes but show her a guinea pig and shes all kinds of interested! Anything a dog isnt used to is fun and exciting.
But my dogs are used to snakes and other herps. Being Bismarck, ND im sure not alot of reptiles go through our airport and this dog just responded very strongly to the smell of the snakes, either that or the guy i bought the snakes from could have smoked pot around the pillow cases or packing materiel before he sent it out :P
-
Something very evil in me wishes that if it happend to me I could look guilty enough that they would open the bags themselves. :D
-
Re: Drugs? Oh wait no its just snakes.
well thats funny that they thought the snakes i sent u were drugs.. haha thats crazy ... anyways they look great in there new home, and i hope u enjoy them as much as i did :)

You should of been like I got 400grams of that mojave stuff lol that is weird how dogs can get weary about new smells, funny the detectives didn't dare to look inside the bags lol

I know! it was crazy!
And yes I am enjoying the snakes! Crazy the amount of trouble these snakes cost us on both ends! lol usually shipping snakes isnt that exciting. :P
I cant wait to handle them more. I wanna look at them more closely but im letting them settle in still.

Re: Drugs? Oh wait no its just snakes.
Man does that sound similar to a story that happened to me.
I was living down in Chattanooga, TN. Drove up to Nashville to pick up a snake, bought the snake and the lady gave me a ten gallon tank and some ASF's to start breeding for food.
Well on the way home we get hit by the hook going a little too fast.
Pulls me and my woman out of the car one by one, ask's us both I don't know how many times if there were drugs in the car...NO NO NO, YES you can search the car.
:)
"What's in the box" he asks when he glances through the front of the car and looks in the backseat...THE SNAKE THAT WE TOLD YOU WE JUST PICKED UP!
He basically stopped everything he was doing and said slow it down and have a safe trip back home.
Who would of thought police are terrified of snakes but will face death everyday.

Thats awesome, maybe we should all carry around a box in our cars claiming its a snake and we can get away all kinds of stuff! (until that one brave cop comes along and doesnt mind snakes lol)
Theres seriously nothing I love more then seeing a grown man act like a little frightened girl when it comes to a snake. Even our boys in blue make it seem even a little more sweet. :D
