Mite sprays

Ok I know I'm going to get flamed for piston this because it's been talked to death but here goes anyway. We are up to around 35+/- snakes and a couple lizards and we would like to begin monthly preventative cleanings of our tubs with a mite killer.

We have heard a lot of praise for PAM but 1.the way I understand it you can't spray this on your animals and I would think that not spraying your animals would allow a reinfestation of the enclosure if the mites were still on the animal. 2. If this is the stuff to go with where does everyone get a good price?
Next question is what about the stuff RBI sells? I have come to trust Rich and doubt he would sell a crap product but wanted your thoughts on it. I like that I can purchase a gallon of it at a time.
Lastly, who uses Nix and what advice would you have on that?

PAM you cannot spray directly on the reptiles, but spraying the enclosure is more than enough to stop an infestation in it's tracks. I have never used the RBI mite stuff so I can't speak on that.

I was taking with Rich on show at White Plains.. he admit that his stuff is animal safe.. But not that powerful as PAM.
He recommends it as prevention when You buying new animal.
For example You buy snake on show coming home and you can spray RBI stuff on cloth or paper towel and wipe snake off.
I have it.. Use once when i was get new snake on the show.. never needed again...

PAM is the way to go however I think monthly treatment is overkilled.

I am paranoid about mites as well and have a good size collection however with solid quarantine practices, 2 treatment a year of the main collection (once every 6 months) mandatory treatment of new addition I have never seen mites in my collection.

Ok well if monthly is too much that's good news lol less work. So I don't have to treat the animal at all then?

Since this thread is about mite treatment, and most notably PAM, I like to periodically post my little photo tutorial on it to hopefully clear up any confusion or misunderstandings that new members may have when PAM is referred to, and also to try and prevent the mistake that I almost made the first time I was told to use PAM on my snake for mites...

PAM is a Canola oil based spray made by Con-Agra Foods. It is used to allow that fried egg to slide all around the pan while you chase it with a spatula, only to have it end up on the floor :(

I can vouch for Reptile Relief which is sold at www.reptilebasics.com.

It worked for me when 2 of my snakes got mites last year.

I haven't seen another mite since.

Before using any chemical you need to understand fully what you might be exposing your self to. I cannot find a MSDS sheet on P-A-M although I did not look too hard it is likely under the manufactures name not the distributers name. I believe pro products is required to provide it to you if you ask. I would be concerned about YOUR long term exposure to it.

I will say that I really like the post on the two pams.:D I use provent-a-mite preventatively during monthly cleaning. I use clorahexadine (sp?) to clean and after cleaning provent-a-mite. I spray PAM and let it air dry in another room. Then, back in my snake room, put in fresh bedding, snake, and replace the water dish. In a video, I have seen breeders use PAM and put the snake in the enclosure fairly quickly, but I take the extra air dry step and allow the fumes to dissipate. I have heard of using nix, but have not tried it for myself. I know you can get PAM online at the website someone previously mentioned, but I usually buy it at the reptile shows...( saves a bit on shipping). I will continue to use this product unless something better comes along.
