Cord Problem?

    Cord Problem?
I believe I may have a problem brewing with one of my eggs. I cut this egg after worrying about the size of the egg and a few water stains beginning to show up on the shell. This little one has been in its egg for a little over a day now and while adding some water to its egg I noticed that the cord seems to be wrapped either around itself or its yolk sac.

Can I get some experienced feedback? I don't cut eggs normally and I don't know what's normal and what isn't when it comes to the yolk sac inside the egg. Should I be seeing the cord here?

Maybe a last resort but better to have options.

    Thanks, LGray.

I just reread my post. When I said "wrapped around itself" that should have been "wrapped around the baby".

Is this a wait and see situation or should I move the baby to a deli cup lined with wet paper towels?

Its not the end of world. They have a 50/50 shot of making it. This baby will require to be taking out of the egg now as waiting will result in its death.

Need to either tie it off and let it fall off on its own, or tie it and then cut .25" below the tie off and put the baby in a small deli cup on wet paper towels for few days on heat.

I hope it all works out. Please keep this updated if you don't mind. I love learning stuff like this for when I eventually get to breeding my own collection.

    Regards,

    B

Just wanted to add, this is not a result of you cutting the egg. This baby would of more than likely died in the egg if you didnt cut.

Checked on him/her this morning and the yolk sac seems a little smaller and paler. The baby's belly is definitely filling out as well. Yesterday it looked quite thin and wrinkly in places. I guess because this egg was deflated so much, it caused some repositioning in the egg and the yolk was plainly visible where in a normal egg the yolk would be on the bottom and covered by the baby's body. Still, the cord does appear to be wrapped around the yolk so I did remove the baby and put it inside the deli cup that I had warming in the enclosure next to mom.

I will give the baby a little more time in the deli cup before I try to tie it off and cut it from the sac. I think it is still absorbing its yolk but it's just doing it very slowly because of the way the cord has wrapped itself. I'm also hesitant to try to untangle it because of its location. I'm afraid if I tried to loosen the cord at all, I would risk rupturing it.

I did pick up and turn the sac some because the cord seemed to be a bit twisted near its base. Hopefully that will help. The baby is very active and definitely does not like me messing around with it. If the sac doesn't change any further tonight I think I'll go ahead and tie it off and cut it away from the baby. If the baby isn't absorbing anything more from the sac I see no reason to make it wait for the thing to dry up and fall off.

Also, after looking in on this little guy/gal I realized I have eggs pipping. Pics are in the other thread. :)

Okay, the baby's yolk hadn't really changed at all so I cut it away. I used dental floss to tie off the cord near baby's belly and severed the connection with the sac. I actually had two tie off the cord twice because the little wiggle worm's first knotted piece of floss came off while I was pulling it tight. I also put him/her on the scale before moving to its own hatchling tub to see what it weighs.

in a day or two keep eye on the cord, make sure the floss falls off and the cord retracts inside..

Had this same thing happen except the baby dropped the sac on its own. I'm currently waiting on the first shed, but everything seems to be perfectly normal.

    Good luck with this one!

Awesome post, clarify lots of my doubts ! Thanks. But may I know why is it a must to tie on the cord before cutting it?

Same reason why you'd want to clamp an infant's cord before cutting it away from the placenta. There are blood vessels running through the cord to the sac and if you cut without clamping or tying it off, it could bleed out.

I see, how long after tying to be able to cut, will the snake feel pain when cutting through the cord?

You cut just after tying it off. I don't think there would be any pain involved. There are blood vessels running through the cord, but no nerves so no pain receptors.
